As a pianist myself with over 10 years XP, I am impressed with the passion he plays. ESPECIALLY recovering it after a mistake. When I have bad performances and I mess up, sometimes I go into autopilot to focus on hitting the right notes and sacrifice musicality. The only times I don't care I made a mistake and just play expressively is when I am playing my favorite songs alone. But this guy can get into that headspace in a crowded stage. Absolutely awesome.

Every musician makes mistakes when playing live, but how you recover from those mistakes in the moment is what makes you great. This guy did just that. Awesome stuff

As a pianist, the passion is all there in this performance. For everyone that's not a musician here, it takes more than 2 months to perfect a piece. For something learned in 2 months, this is excellent work. Give it a year of practice and the muscle memory will make it impossible to miss a note. Every yearly recital I had, I would have to play up to 9 songs by pure memory in front of a judge with every expression and note in perfect place. It would take half the year to learn all the pieces, then the other half to perfect them for recitals and that was with daily practice. To this day, even with 25 yrs experience, when I play in front of any audience I still get nervous and miss notes here and there, but most people never notice because they aren't musicians and their ears aren't trained to pick up on it.

As a non-musician but rabid consumer, for me the key to this piece is capturing the emotion in the execution of the notes. Kid nailed it.

He is going far and high places. This version brought me to tears because of how pure it was. How he handled his mistakes added another level of depth and beauty to this already powerful song.

At my graduation, I played this exact piece as well and I can confidently say that he absolutely nailed it. It took me months of practice to learn this piece and also a lot of encouragement from my friends to play it in front of a crowd. My performance wasnt perfect but I do not regret doing it 👍

The mess ups, pauses, and replays of single notes make this feel more natural. Yeah, "perfect" covers exist, but this has the natural, human feel to it, and would've been amazing to experience in person. Great job!

The little “wow” when the chorus started was just lovely

Not gonna lie - this brought a tear. The date was December 17th, 1982, at Dryden High School, in Ontario Canada - I performed solo piano in public for the very first time. It was a day that changed my life. Because DHS served students from several communities in the Dryden area, the audience was probably 4 times larger as what the audience shown here appears to be. Christmas holidays were about to begin, I accompanied a pretty girl to the "Snowball Dance" that night in the same auditorium, and had my first real kiss. Memories like this made this one of the most memorable, and certainly the most important, day of my life. I then set out to make music my life, and that's what my life became, and at 58 years of age now, still is. People don't remember the mistakes you make. What's remembered are the smiles and feelings that you can provide those people because of what you do, and much more importantly - what you provide yourself. It's the passion of music. I wish this young lad every success and hope he remembers THIS day, the same way I remember my experience, like it was yesterday, even though it was over 40 years ago.

You've got some good friends. The hype prior to the performance was something special. That was also a great performance. Didn't let the mistakes phase you, and played them just as confidently as the notes you played correctly. There's a lesson here, but I'm sure many others have already made the point. Keep going, and don't ever stop! It's all uphill the older you get, but it looks like you're in good company!

This honestly made me cry, every cover i hear of this song, people put so much of their heart into it, even the slightest mistake is not even a mistake, just a minor bump in the road of playing this whole song, the only word that is close enough to describe interstellar is Beautiful.

Right off the bat I love it how they encourage him but then have the respect to be silent to listen to the piece. My daughter was in a music school when she was 5-7 and performed in concerts where several grown adults were always loudly talking through her whole piece that we had painstakingly practised. It was brutal. Fair play to these kids, and to his beautiful piece. I love this video

When I was 17 I knew like 2 easy songs on piano that didnt require any demanding skill and I thought that I could never be able to play this song correctly learning by myself. Now I am 20 and I can play this song perfectly. Keep pushing guys. If I did it you can too. And I didnt kill myself trying to learn piano I just had fun with it

As someone who's been playing this exact score for two years now, I can say that I STILL mess up some of the transitions - it is a difficult piece, and to play it that confidently in front of a crowd is superb. Very well done, I can tell you've spent a lot of time practicing. The sections where you go play at 4:18 until the end of the score are the trickiest to play, and to keep your cool and keep going is amazing - especially having only worked on this for two months! Keep up the great work, and make sure to keep putting your heart into your music.

I'm honest: I cried at 2:40 . The whole scene, the music, the passion and this "oh wow" moment in the audience. I don't know him but i just was proud of him and touched in this situation. This was more then just "playing music in front of someone."😅

i love this piece. i performed this for my music GCSE’s (for people who don’t come from the UK, those are your exams that you do at 15 or 16 years old) and i remember day after day working tirelessly to perfect it. no matter how hard i tried, no matter how many hours, i couldn’t get it perfect. i had missed notes and slight slip ups every single time. when i finally sat down for recording so it could be sent to the exam board my hands were trembling and my heart sank. but i played the best i could, and despite a few slight errors i called it a day and sent it off. i got full marks. it went to show that nothing needs to be flawless to be considered perfect and this performance reminded me of the beauty of this song. thank you caleb.

I could feel the overwhelming heaviness as he pressed each note on the piano keys, followed by emptiness, doubt, and chaos in his head, maybe music was the clear container. most emotions and moods that I can hear. music like life. Anyway, maybe his high school friends made him a little stressed 🥲

Lovely performance! I love this piece. Apparently Nolan's only guidance to Zimmer was to write a piece about a father's love for his kids - if you have seen the movie you know the relevance. What blows me away is how you can hear that so clearly in the music. Starts as a single refrain, which slowly builds until another is added, with the two refrains intertwining, changing and improving each other, with sad and hopeful parts. I'll never be a father, but this piece makes me feel some aspect of that experience.

This was incredible and actually taught me something. I am currently learning piano and I have had this terrible habit of if I hit a wrong note, I'll stop playing completely and no matter how many other correct notes I play, I don't feel like the piece is good unless I've hit literally 100% correct on the notes. I got to a point to where it was quite unhealthy and would call myself names and really just beat the shit out of myself mentally for it. In full honesty, when I heard the first couple mistakes you made I thought "ehh he's got some practicing to do" then after I heard a bit more I thought "yeah he ain't got it" (I know this sounds harsh but spoiler alert, theres a point to me saying it). I actually paused the video and almost clicked off but then, I started reading some of the comments and didn't. I thought about what that movie is truly about. The undeniable and relentless aspects of the human spirit. Through intense struggle, catastrophe, and calamity, we continue on through life. Even if the body is near its end, the spirit still pushes for more, onward. Just like the quote from the movie by Dylan Thomas "Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light." THAT IS LITERALLY WHAT YOU DID! And when people say your mistakes added to the performance, that's what they mean! You fought through them and continued on and on no matter what! It was quite literally like watching the meaning of the music come to light while it was being played! The support at the end was insane. Them cheering so loud and passionately at the end really taught me something. I'm gonna try to start giving myself credit for all the right notes I played FIRST then accepting mistakes (because they are inevitable), and fighting through them without letting them tear me apart mentally. Thank you for sharing this, amazing incredible performance.
