"The most treacherous location in the jazz world was to be on a bandstand as the guy who has to play the solo right after Mike Brecker." - Pat Metheny. Well, there was one person who got the world record in doing just that, his superb counterpart and brother, Randy. He really delevoped an own super distinctive style for his own which made the Brecker Brothers such an interesting band. This is a solo on the tune "Straphangin" from the 1980 same titled album by the Brecker Brothers.
Michael Brecker his solo right before has been transcribed on this channel as well. Here is the full original video: • Michael and Randy Brec...
This is probably one fo the last times they performed together before Michael Brecker became ill and eventually passed away after battling leukemia in 2007. The album this is one received multiple grammys.
Thank you for all the great music ‪@WDRBIGBAND‬

"The most treacherous location in the jazz world was to be on a bandstand as the guy who has to play the solo right after Mike Brecker." - Pat Metheny. Well, there was one person who got the world record in doing just that. Because of the incredible force of nature Michael was, Randy might be a bit underappreciated imho. Can't highlight enough how authentic I find his sound and phrasing, as well as that in combination with a hugely distinct vocabulary in improvisation. I was lucky enough to attend a similar circumstance as the video here probably around 2011 or so, where Randy was again the guest with the WDR Big Band and joined by Chris Potter! I attended the rehearsal for that and sat a few meters (sorry all you yard-men) from both. The personal sound Randy had on trumpet is unreal. I remember them playing an arrangement of the Brecker Bros tune "Rocks"... wish there was recording online of this (there is probably some kind of rehearsal recording they made), I promise THAT nails you to the wall! Randy is one of my personal favorite trumpet players. Who's yours? By the way, let's try to get this channel to 100k subs someday, subscribe if you haven't already, that would be so awesome! /Jorre

Haha, yes, it is amazing how confident he could choose some of the most outside chordtones but made if fit in the larger picture. I think he mentioned he studied a lot of the Slonimsky book which would make sense

I'm a saxophonist, but I've always liked Randy's own edge style. His solos on "Heavy Metal Bebop" are so out of this world to this day

@@SharpElevenMusic Hey guys, first Michael Brecker on a record... it's actually in 1968 on Randy's solo record! Randy thank you so much for bringing your brother into the music world with you! Michael was aiming for basketball🎺🎷

Randy and his brother changed my life and the way I feel, learn and play the instrument and music. 20 days ago I was in an Italian town almost 800km from my home by bus to go and see it! I couldn't hold back the tears... the most beautiful trumpet I've heard for almost 6 years was in front of me! I had prepared the Brecker Bros t-shirt for the event and a personalized trumpet beak that I gave to Mr.Randy Brecker with the dedication ''Brecker Bros thanks for your music'' obviously I had informed myself about the model and the opening that Randy played so I made a model very similar to his. Well after giving it to him he thanked me and went to the bar where the sound check musicians were and I thought ''he must have already thrown the beak in the garbage'' To my great surprise, he goes on stage, mounts the trumpet and I see that he uses the beak that I printed for him! and it sounded like a bomb!! as soon as I realized guys I cried again! Randy called me on stage and give me a fantastic (trumpet lick) and an unforgettable photo!!!! Sorry, I use the translator for this story. I uploaded a video to my channel with this... now I will post other pieces too. How sad I was the only one to see the sound check and ask Randy for his autograph!

That's a beautiful and moving story. Thanks for sharing that here. By the way, I didn't notice the translator until the very end where it says "he gave me a lick"... not sure what that means. I love your dedication for travelling so far. I was last month on holiday in Northern Italy (Monfalcone), Italy is a beautiful country

@@SharpElevenMusic I tried to fix the text! I'm rereading hoping I didn't write things I didn't want to! ...I live in Italy, in Sicily exactly. I have been studying the saxophone since January 2024.... I have been listening to jazz for more than 10 years... I had to take this path.. too much music goes through my head now to not have an instrument in my hands

This song just reminds me of Family Guy now. Not sure why.....

Not sure, but perhaps by an older goofy video I made of a Michael Brecker 8 bar loop for 10 hours out of this solo? Its called "Peter Griffin dances to Michael Brecker". Other than that, I don't know of any connection between the two

When you mentioned Family Guy, it made me think of the distracting trumpet cutaway gag. So funny.
