A rattlesnakes common lines of defense in order: 1: stay hidden 2: retreat and rattle 3: dry bite 4: spicy bite (last resort) Venomous snakes take ages to produce their venom which is needed for hunting. They don't want to waste it on self defense but will do so if they're backed into a corner.
I grew up with the belief that all snakes were bad and as a kid I learned that's not true. I got a book of reptiles and I just studied the snake section because I was so afraid of snakes not terrified but I was afraid that you know they were all bad. I also thought that they were very interesting and the thing I learned was that most snakes are not there to hurt you. They don't really see you as a threat other than you can harm them and they don't want that anymore than you want them to harm you. They want to go on their way. And they want to do as little as possible to go about their day and as long as you respect them, you'll find that they're not going to harm you. And most of the snakes that are out there are good snakes. You want them around. They're there for a reason, meaning there's something there that's got their attention. They're there for rodents or other snakes and most of your good snakes will eat your bad snakes
I find all sorts of snakes on my biking trail all the time ( including rattlesnakes and tarantulas ). I always make sure they clear the trail before I proceed. They deserve your respect and protection. ❤
Good on you for helping that rattler and speaking out for venomous snakes. They deserve to live as much as we do and can't help that we are encroaching on their habitat. Rattlers would rather warn us of their presence than cause harm. They don't deserve to be killed.
Saw that snake today. A big one. I was running and it was really hard to see. It scared the shiz out of me and I jumped away...right as I saw it, it balled up. I tried to scare it away but it would not. It was beautiful but yaaa....
I was exploring in the Palouse area of Washington State when I spied something moving in the shrubbery. It was a rattlesnake. It saw me. I saw it. We both moved in opposite directions.
We don’t worry about the snake we see…it’s the snake we don’t…& we know that eventually the snake we saw & left alive will later kill someone who doesn’t see it later.
Bullshit, most snake bites don't happen, because you step on them in the forest, but rather because some drunk guy tries to pick it up or because some moron tries to kill it.
I would have been that person to do harm to it, honestly. They’re terrible creatures that kill people. Good riddance, rattlensnake. It’s something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life.
