Strange. For 20 years I’ve heard it the other way around. That the colder water below the thermo cline contains more oxygen. In fact one of the lakes that I fish once the thermocline gets pronounced in summer months you’re wasting your time to fish shallower than 30 feet. All the ish will be 30 to 35 feet. Just right under the thermocline line.

All things being equal, cold water does hold more oxygen. But with the thermocline, you have stratification. The deeper water does not mix with the upper, and because it has no source of oxygen, it runs lower and lower than the upper layer which is able to get re-oxygenated from the air.

It is actually a function of the lake's productivity. If the lake has low productivity, there is not a lot of organic matter for bacteria to eat or living critters using the oxygen and you can go many weeks or months of thermal stratification and still have oxygen. This is common in northern lakes with clear water. In more productive lakes (that have lower visibility due to phytoplankton growth), there is enough stuff consuming oxygen in those depths that you lose the oxygen within a couple weeks of stratification (occurs in spring). johnsonc8 pointed out it is the lack of mixing that matters here and the amount of oxygen you have at depth once the thermocline develops is all you have for the rest of summer...if there is enough oxygen relative to the stuff consuming the oxygen, it can hold fish, but in systems where the oxygen gets consumed quickly, it will have no fish the rest of the summer.

I always fish just below the thermocline for kokanee. Lake trout are usually below it, right on the bottom.

We have this issue at Lacamas Lake in SW Washington. A total dead zone 18’ under the surface. They also just put a warning out for toxic algae.

Appreciate the concern. If any body of water has that slow of current. It should be avoided during warmer temperatures.

Does that stratification change throughout the day or if you move to a different area of the lake? I’ve noticed it last couple weeks here in North Carolina but also noticed the haze would disappear later in the morning and afternoon and also when moving out of the creeks to the main lake.

Some lakes turn over pretty quickly depending on the size and wind and things like that. Trust the electronics

I'm a Chickmauga / Watts Bar guy. I assume no thermocline due to the current. Correct?
