Try this for simple tomato sauce( came from the internet somewhere), put any tomato( forget peeling), chopped onions, peppers if you like, browned meat if you like, whatever seasoning you like, pressure cook ( Instant Pot is good) for 20 minutes, use immersion blender to purée. No need to remove seeds, can use tomatoes with tough skins, will all be tender, but, thinner than most sauces. Reduce on stove or add a thickener. Perfect for those forgotten freezer tomatoes with thick skins that need to go!

Count me in as one who loves salt on a melon, any melon. Try salt on an apple, it will change your world. And of course salt and pepper on a tomato is the only way to go.

It took me 5 years after I moved to Florida (from Maryland) to plant a fall garden! I got real tired of the mammoth weeds we get here in an empty plot, so two years ago I decided to have a year round garden. It was only successful with advice and inspiration from Hoss Tools! I’m a real southern, year round gardener, now!

This show and topic does have PERFECT timing!!! I just started doing fall gardening the last couple of years and I have yet to get my cabbage and broccoli planted at the right time! I’ve been late every year and ironically those are my families favorites! Please do a show soon on when to get those cabbage and broccoli transplants started!! I’m in west central Georgia, Harris County, so I’m not too far off from the same Planting times as you are….. if any! ALWAYS LOVE THE SHOW WHEN MS SHELIA IS ON!!! Great information, and lots of it!! Dehydrated watermelon makes a great "candy like" treat. It's so good! It concentrates the sweetness and taste into bite size pieces. I slice long pieces about 5" x 5" or longer and about 1/4" thick and lay them on trays to dehydrate at 117°f for a few days or until rubbery. Then I use scissors and cut into 1"x 1" squares and dehydrate until crisp. Oh yum! Store in mason jars, vacuumed sealed. Good for many many years!

Like I said before, I just love y'all! When I lived in Zone 9b, yes, we had a little longer warm season, but the flip side of that is there are a number of things that I can grow here in Zone 8b that won't grow at all there. And in Central Florida, you really had to be lucky - The end of July through October is usually the worst of hurricane season. I can't begin to tell you how many times I'd plant something only to have it decimated by a tropical storm or hurricane! While the weather can be challenging here, it seems like it's just a tad easier to deal with. Sheila!! I'm making curried zucchini pickles tomorrow - They are yummy!

...aaand this is why ya'll are the 'Best Dadgum Gardening Show on the Internet' lol I think the [harvest window] is the part that is the hardest to find good info on for all the different vegetables when trying to put together a good succession plan. That would be a REALLY USEFUL tool to have, especially for items you haven't grown before. Maybe a chart that shows an estimated harvest window for each type of vegetable. I struggled with this a lot. I would have items started and ready to go in and the previous crop wouldn't be finished. The DTM doesn't really help you with that part. Anyway, thank you so much for all the time you put into these shows, etc. because you are truly 'helping people to grow their own food.' God Bless.

Last year I didn't listen to locals who knew what they were talking about and I planted pumpkins second to third week of June and I had pumpkins ripening in mid-August. Here in excessive Arkansas heat 100-day pumpkins can turn into 70 and 80-day pumpkins. So this year I waited till July 3rd to put my seed in the ground, can't always go by the days of maturity on a plant package.

The more webbing marks (scaring) on a watermelon the better, that is what i was told when i was young and learning from a lifelong gardner in his late 60's. Supposedly everytime a bee visits the flower it will create more webbing on the fruit when it develops and will make the watermelon sweeter.

With regard to fall planting and frost dates: sure, you certainly dont want less time than time to maturity for a crop however, things slow down quite a bit when grown in the fall, so it takes longer for the crop than what is on the sticker. the maturity time as on the sticker is for when crop is grown in perfect conditions for growth of that crop.

When should we get carrots, onions and garlic in? Can we plant potatoes for a fall garden?
@brokencage9723
@brokencage9723 3 года назад
my onions and garlic go in mid fall, 1-2 months before my first frost. some onions will go in later depending on the strain and day length needed to bulb up. potatoes work fine for a fall garden, we stick to early varieties here in zone 7b I plant taters out in the first week of august. can be hard to find good seed potato in the fall though. This year I am experimenting with TPS potato seed I bought from Ukraine. they sell potato seeds the same way we sell tomato seeds. They will be ready to plant out by the first week of august I had good germination. dont know what to expect tho.
@malcolmt7883
@malcolmt7883 3 года назад
Shouldn't plant garlic too early. Want it to sprout in late winter, not in the fall, so wait until after a killing frost. About the time the leaves are falling off your shade trees.

What's the seedless watermelon accidentally found in the wild like the seedless oranges are in a Grove?
@bobbun9630
@bobbun9630 3 года назад
Seedless watermelons are essentially a man-made crop. Genetically they are triploids, just like the seedless bananas we all get at the store. In the case of watermelons, though, this is accomplished by... Well, to avoid all the technical details, let's just say "laboratory shenanigans". They're perfectly safe to eat, though, and if GMO bothers you then you should know that this technique is somewhat different than that--all of the genes involved originate with watermelons.
