When I was younger I was able to speak Thai fluently. I lost it somewhere when I went to American schools. But for some reason, I'm still able to understand stand it just as much as I could back then. But I can't speak it even if my life depended on it. Great video Nathan, this video hit my soul.
Vietnamese is so easy to understand because we’ve gotten yelled at in it everyday for our entire lives but as soon as you try to speak it like ordering food you’re suddenly going “uhhhhh pho… boh? Suuh?” And it doesn’t help that we’re all questioning our accents lol
Vietnamese is also easy to learn (like writing and reading, etc...) but hard to speak because of the accents, sometimes I speak too fast and can't even pronounce the words anymore lol
Bro, as a native Vietnamese (born, raised and still living here) it's so bard to understand your own language when it's spoken in another reagon, like the north and centre accents are really hard for me to pick up sometimes since I'm fron the south. Especially centre Vietnamese bro that shits like a whole new language, you can hear it and pick out like 60% of the words, yeah. But you still don't understand a thing.
@@mattbuszko well, what you say in your first comment is quite formal, and you fixed it, now I have trouble understanding why would you say "your country is beautiful" to "your country's weather is nice"
when you think that you've finally mastered Vietnamese but, in fact, you only scratched the surface as a Vietnamese, i felt quite relieved (and proud for having such hard and troublesome language)
As a Vietnamese person raised in America, I had to learn it completely through listening to conversations so I was never much good at it x) that being said, I understand it perfectly and my accent is decent... I just can’t go beyond the average day-to-day conversation. That being said, I love the video! edit; randomly got recommended this video a year after this comment lmao… for some reason i can understand the video a lot better lol. i also wanted to add i have no idea how to read or write vietnamese… that part is very difficult 😭
ayyy I was born in Vietnam, started speaking when I was around 2 and my parents say I was really talkative, we moved to America when I was around 4 and I’m now more fluent in English than viet 💀 i have to say short phrases in vietnamese(yes, no, I don’t know, thank you, good morning/night, stuff like that)
A technique my cousin, sisters, and I have mastered to communicate with our relatives (we were only taught English) was the ‘smile, nod, yes’. If all else fails, look at our parents because they have to translate because they were too lazy to teach us.
I feel so bad whenever I do this, they’re probably saying some very important life lessons. When my parents finally step in and explains that we don’t speak the language they look so disappointed LOL. Usually though, the smile and nod, occasional laugh works pretty well.
@@purpleteardropss Fr I can relate my parents aren’t Asian they’re African & didn’t bother to teach me, I picked some up from them talking to me. But since its not a language like Vietnamese I can’t just go Duolingo to learn it 💀

im pretty sure the majority of people here are in the same situation including me lmao. understanding both english and viet here makes the vid so much more funnier
@@cookieguy3360 ah when I was growing up and probably until I'm married older vietnamese people used to ask me how old or what grade I was in. Or where I go to school etc. But all I really knew how to say was yes

I love that he’s getting yelled at by his mom on the phone while he’s waiting to get his order taken at a restaurant. 😂🤣 THIS IS ACCURATE, y’all. Mom be yellin’ anywhere and everywhere
I'm really touched about how relatable this is as an African I can't speak my local language that much but I do understand it The only language I can speak fluently is English. I can even switch between the American, British and African accent when speaking English
as a filipino i find this very relatable, my entire family knows how to speak tagalog fluently and i can understand perfectly but its so hard for me to speak the language
As an American with Vietnamese parents and grandparents, this is so accurate. I don’t understand sh*t about some of the words, but know how to carry on a basic convo.
THIS IS SO RELATABLE, my family only speaks hokkien and english so I only speak those two languages at home despite me living in indonesia. Whenever order food in indonesian I am forced to order my food as quickly as possible with short sentences. If the conversation were to drag on for too long the person taking my order along with those behind me in line might notice my crappy grammar which makes me feel sad whenever I have those energetic waiters who just want to make small talk with me.
yes finally someone that goes through the same thing!! This is me but with Spanish. I understand it it fluently.. but to verbally speak.. it's uhh... yeah LMAO! My parents would speak to me in full blown Spanish and I just respond in English ( because of where I grew up )
I was like this for most of my childhood in Dutch but ended up teaching myself it to speak over highschool. It's a really weird experience having a perfect accent, and being able to understand everything, but not being able to speak more than a 3rd grader lmaooo.
As a vietnamese, I can say that we understand this language quite easily. But speaking it is another story, everyone seems to have some kind of social awkwardness, to the point if you ask them "what do you like" they'll answer it a lot quicker than responding to "bạn thích gì?"
the fact it turned into the typical "Get your reek of dissapointment ass the fuck out of the house" with that song plays likes in those old shows on cast got me dying
@@krunex sometimes it's easier to read a language than speak it so you have more time to remember what the words mean and can visualize the words and don't have to worry about pronunciation
The phone call at the beginning is so accurate. Parents just talk talk talk talk because you don’t say anything, because you’re not used to the language.

I kid everybody not, I used to speak like this. I was a super slow learner in Vietnam as well as English , I had to take the lowest English class in community college several times to be able to move on to English 101. Let alone speaking Vietnamese was notmy native tongue even tho I’m Vietnamese came to America at 2 years old. Didn’t really force myself to talk Vietnam especially my dialect was different bc I’m from a small island. For me, I learn Vietnamese thru drinking and karaoke with my uncles at around 27 years old. Now 44 and I can speak it ok but I don’t understand the songs in the karaoke means at all. I just focus on pronunciation and tones so that I can at least sound Vietnamese unstead of some American speaking it. I did it because I want to get to know my roots. nEVER forget your roots.
This is very relatable indeed. I speak a language in Filipino culture called “Bisaya” (or, at least understand). But when I speak it, I sound like I’m surprised of the words that come out of my mouth. I sound like I’m summoning the demon that dragged my brother to hell.
Title: When you can understand a language but cant speak it. Nathan: idk what this man just said. Me: how about we change the title to "When you cant understand a language but can speak it?
i can't- my stomach is hurt after watching this, loving the accent there XD if this ever happens in Vietnam the owner won't hesitate to chase you with their broom

My parents told me when I was twelve I literally shouted "I UNDERSTAND YOU GUYS!" When they were speaking Hakka. And then they laughed and thought maybe they should talk in Malay. It's awkward to speak English when conversing with my older relatives. Lol. So accurate.
The “No cow 🐄 Only chicken 🐓 “ part is even funnier bc it’s so relatable. Most of my Viet understanding is dependent on context and the occasional vocab I recognize. 💀
as a vietnamese my whole life this is amazingly funny bc ive actually seen this at my local pho restaurant where an american just kept saying phở tái bò viên but didnt understand when the owner said we are out of bò viên :)) also were you born down north? your accent is very thick :)
He knows grammer, he just doesn't know English well. difference. If you spoke spanish, you'd get it wrong to, imagine if someone laughed, nice grammer.
