Just about every Newfie I've ever known was this "stereotype". The ones that didn't have the accent reverted back to their Newfie slang as soon as you put a few drinks in them.

They always call this a Newfie accent, but really, it's Acadian. People in Gaspé use a lot of the same phrases and sound similar. Not sure about NB and PEI but there are places outside newfoundland where this accent is common!

No, while we do have some French influence in NL the majority of our accent derives from southeast Ireland and the west country of England.

The reason why the actual NL curling team doesn't have an accent is that most of them aren't actually from NL, and Brad Gushue himself is from St Johns where people have either a mild accent or none at all. That being said, "Byrne" (Shaun Majumder) talks just like my father! LOL

Team gushy is a bunch of townies. They talk like mainlanders because they are trying to be proper. Wouldn't know most people were ashamed of it or something having an accent. Anyone who makes jokes about that are ignorant , surely having a French accent or Albertan accent sounds just as different but for some reason doesn't get the attention . Some jokes are funny but alot has a hidden meaning of being degrading to Nlers.

I used to work with two Newfoundlanders here in Ontario. One who kept his Newfoundland accent, and the other who lost or hid his original accent. Needless to say, the real 'Newfie' was a genuine and kind hearted fellow. The other guy looked down on him and didn't want any association with Newfoundland.

Just when you [hopefully] think that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have moved past the "Newfie jokes" and slanderous comments about our people, "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" airs this totally demeaning and slanderous skit that, once again.....and on National Television.....puts down the people of our province. The skit is an absolute and unnecessary put down that misrepresents our people. The "sting" of this skit struck so deep that words cannot express! What "This Hour" has done is shameful and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve an apology. The province, whose people they slandered here, is not the province that I know!! Shameful....absolutely shameful!!

It's not just a stereotype. There are dozens of accents across Newfoundland and Labrador. People who try to lose their accents boggle my mind. Why would anyone from Atlantic Canada (or anywhere else for that matter) want to sound like someone from Toronto? Have some bloody pride.

@pyangsu

True, the accents in NL can change form town to town. Even the sayings can be different - in some parts of NL they call the day before xmas eve "Tibbs Eve" and in other parts it's called "Tipsy Eve", for example. Bonavista Bay has what I would consider to be the "stereotypical" Newfie accent. I wish I could find an example of a French Newfie accent - unfortunately the few people who still have one are 70+ years old. St John's always had a milder accent, and most of the younger generation in St John's have a general Canadian accent now.

A lot of Newfoundlanders, for some reason, love the stereotype language. I grew up in St. John's and this sort of language didn't exist. However, we seem to like using it in front of mainlanders for some reason which escapes me. Every mainlander believes we all talk this way.

BYour accent is determined by where you grew up and also if your ancestors were Irish or English. In St.Johns accents were also affected by which part of town you came from. Thus many people from “away” may not consider the normal question “ Where are you from” as an introductory conversation beginning.Some CFA’s are even offended by what they think is too personal or bigoted a query.
@dinkster1729
@dinkster1729 2 месяца назад
Yes, I"ve noticed that people in Ontario who are newcomers to the country are really offended by questions about where they are from. Some are proud of it and want to show you their cuture and way of life. It depends. They really don't like it if you detect an accent or a different way of seeing things.

I grew up in Minnesota, and everyone not from the Upper Midwest thinks people in Minnesota all sound like "Fargo" rejects. I still have to tell people that no one talks like that unless they emigrated from Norway, and that was probably in the 1940s, so now no one really talks like someone in Fargo, doncha know?
