Great stuff, David! Definitely good advice about buying local. After being stupid and buying shoes online, I found that REI is good for trying on hikers and trailrunners... and then buying the right size and style online elsewhere for less 😊
Thanks for the introduction to 3G and Elevenskys! Just created an account with each. We used to have a fantastic locally owned outdoor shop that I could always depend on for great backpacking gear. I still have my first down jacket purchased there way back in the 70s. They were really good at fitting hiking boots. The couple that owned the store retired and closed it. After a couple of years one of their kids reopened it in a different location with a good selection, but it never really took off and it closed again after about 18 months. Big disappointment. But I gotta admit I still like REI for the dividends, been a member since 1975.
I bought from REI for a number of years, but lately I've taken my business elsewhere (for a few reasons I'd rather not talk about here). One thing I can mention here is that the dividend for me has been a bit of a wash, because their prices are normally higher (plus, there are no dividends on sale items). It's like the tax refund at the end of the year: pay more than you should to get a check back at the end of the year... zero sum game. But, maybe it's worked out better for you.
