While I'm certain the writers didn't put much thought into the technobabble involving naquadah, there is a sort of explanation for naquadah's reaction with potassium. Potassium metal, while not radioactive on its own, almost always contains a minute amount (usually around 0.012%) of a natural occurring radioactive isotope of potassium (K40), that is interesting in that it is one of the few natural occurring radioactive isotopes that decays in two different ways: beta decay and electron capture. Since naquadah is supposed to be some super-heavy element that is unstable enough to be useful as nuclear fuel and have a half-life long enough that it can be handled with the bare hand without suffering radiation poisoning, then it's possible that it's nuclear structure is very fragile and exposure to certain types of nuclear processes will trigger a chain reaction causing it all to go boom. Since natural naquadah found in ground doesn't go boom-boom randomly (not that we'd be able to know that anyway), it's clear that not any amount of K-40 radiation are enough to trigger an explosion, a minimum amount is required (and probably pure naquadah metal, not just rock with naquadah dust, kind of like how you need weapons-grade uranium to trigger a nuclear explosion and not pitchblend), a sort of activation energy, which can only be achieved by placing potassium metal against a piece of solid naquadah (so throwing a block of weapons-grade naquadah in a pile of bananas or potassium fertilizer is not enough to cause an explosion, especially since all that organic and inorganic filler will act as a radiation shield, beta and low-energy gamma radiation don't penetrate more than a few mm of inert material). In that episode from season 7 with Jonas, where they drill to stop a naquadria vein from reaching the core, and blow up the planet, this would make sense, since the radioactive decay of potassium-40 is of the main sources of radiogenic heat (after thorium and uranium decay), so deep in the planet's crust there might be enough radiation to trigger an explosion (of course later they explain that the planet's core is made of naquadria, so what hell now, is naquadria the main source of Langara's radiogenic heat or not? Why wasn't this an issue in the first place?). Which could explain why naquadah is so rare and why the Goa'uld don't mine it from asteroids (Anubis' asteroid doesn't count), because only a handful of planets have the right conditions that allow naquadah to exist for long periods of time without going boom-boom from natural radiation. And why it doesn't exist on Earth, most would have been destroyed early in Earth's geological period and the rest sank to the planet's core.

Its also implied that for some reason naquadah amplifies explosions in general for some unknown reason. They tried to blow up the goauld ships by essentially just sending nuclear missiles with some naquadah packed in them as well.

It's more plausible that Nirrti somehow enabled the device to purify potassium into its metallic, reactive state and then create a naquadah-enriched bomb that would only explode upon stargate contact. You're thinking in terms of chemical engineering instead of bioengineering, which is really Nirrti's expertise.

Anyone saying "throw a banana on the stargate" doesn't understand basic chemistry. Pure alkali metals, such as potassium, will explode with anything reactive. That's why stable potassium is always ionized, such as that found on food and living organisms. What Carter used here was pure potassium. It would take an enormous feat of bioengineering, i.e. a Goa'uld genius like Nirrti, to produce a self-fabricating, naquadah-enriched potassium bomb inside of a living heart that triggers only upon proximity to the stargate.

I like how they just casually gloss over this information forever, that if anyone touches a stargate with a little potassium...boom.

The potassium in bananas wouldnt cause an explosion close to a Stargate, guys. Tbe potassium in bananas are as salts. They're in a stable ionic state. You'd need a molecule of uncharged potassium, as in, a molecule of elemental potassium.

The exact nature of the Naquadah- & Naquadria-enhanced nukes used prolifically throughout the series are never really elaborated on - so why assume they _didn't_ include potassium in the design? The Tau'ri eventually operationally employed multi-gigaton bombs, for goodness' sake.
