Only you could make 2 sets of crossroads in to a very interesting video Stephen... or maybe Tea in Valhalla too but my money's still on you. I'm surprised that her cottage wasn't burned down in the village. That walking stick sounds cool. You're right when you say about the prejudices towards women and other groups of people still existing, very sad. I love our history of witches, wizards, myths and fables. Hope you have a great weekend.
Hi Gez, thank you buddy for such a wonderful comment 😊 I will pin this at the top shortly 😊 I love folklore, fables too and I have a big interest in witches. It makes me wonder how many crossroads across the UK include burials that have long been forgotten. That small crossroad was probably the most eerie. As it was so isolated. A huge rock was originally on top of that, but it was moved during ww2. Sending my best to you buddy 😊
Interesting about the crossroads and burials. Never heard of such a thing. Pretty cool history. You are a wealth of knowledge. Well done. Take care and have a great day.
Incredible details on this! I never knew these facts about the crossroads and burials of witches. You always have interesting videos Stephen! Hope Yhana is doing well! Hugs to you both!
Your videos are so full of history and amazing views along the way ! Such a fascinating journey and tales of the past. It is sad to hear how things were handled long ago. To keep the past life opened to the public and shared by you is awesome !! Thank you for the interesting adventure with much to learn from 😊
Thank you Cheryl, for the kind comment 😊 it’s an interesting piece of history for sure and very strange practices from the not so distant past too 😊 catch up soon
I agree, there are many tragic stories out there, and a lot of hidden history too, that has simply been lost with time 😊 sending my best and catch up soon 😊
This was fascinating, but also very sad and shocking. I didn't realise that accused witches were sometimes buried at crossroads. I always learn so much interesting historical information from you, Stephen. Awesome depth of research and great storytelling. Thank you 👍😊💖
Thank you Julie and Lucy for the very lovely comment 😊 it was certainly strange times when they buried those condemned in the most lonely of locations. At the time those burials took place, local must have been very skeptic about passing them. Hard to imagine what life was truly like back then. Sending our best and catch up soon 😊😊 ❤️
Only recently did I find out about this significance of crossroads. References were made to crossroad burials in song and story over the years, even in America, but I didn't understand them. Ultimately, my understanding is that if you couldn't afford a proper burial, you would likely be buried in a pauper's grave, but if you died in disgrace (e.g. as a criminal), you would be buried far away from town at the crossroads and not even be afforded homegoing rites.
Wow Hi Stephen and Yhana, what a fascinating video. I learnt so much and I must be honest I hadn’t heard about the crossroads being burial sites before.
Hi Yasmin, thank you very kindly for the comment and for watching too 😊 it’s much appreciated 😊 crossroad burials are piece of hidden history that’s often overlooked. Sending our best and catch up soon
That was fascinating! Somehow the Salem Witch trials seem to override so many other interesting and important aspects of witch trial history. I think it's such an interesting aspect of women's history in general. I also never ceases to amaze me how much history is hidden everywhere in England. You had me looking for witches in Hertfordshire!
Thank you buddy and I agree. The Salem Witch Trials do over ride other areas of the witch trials, even though many hundreds more were executed in the UK then in America. I think books like ‘The Crucible’ had a big part to play in that. Hertfordshire had its fare share of witches - Jane Wenham comes to mind. My direct ancestor Susanna Aylott was actually one of her accusers. I can imagine there are crossroad burials in Hertfordshire too, it’s just a matter of hunting them out. A big thank you buddy and catch up with you soon 😊
Oh wow! So much research and history in the super interesting video. Fascinating locations that have deep links to our (often grisly and brutal) past. This was an impressive piece of work Stephen. Great stuff, thank you! Take care, Paul.
Thank you Paul, for the wonderful comment buddy 😊 sadly not many crossroad burials are still remembers, only those remembered, through the ages by local villagers. I’m sure there are hundreds of them right across the UK. It’s a shame we don’t do more to remember the witch trials. Especially in places like Chelmsford and Exeter. Sending my best and catch up soon 😊

Hi Stephen! Fascinating and gruesome in equal measure. I was thinking much the same, before you reached your summing up! In some ways, society hasn't moved on all that much since those days! All the best and take care👍😊
Hi Des, thank you very kindly for the comment 😊 and for mentioning the final note of the video too. Hopefully one day our world will be a much better place for everyone. Sending my best
Thank you Cara, very interesting about the highwayman 😊 do you know where in Wiltshire he is buried? Very often highwayman we’re hung in a gibbet to deter others and left to rot for many years. I can imagine their remains were placed at crossroads.
@@StephenandYhana not far from where I live, think I did a ghost story on him once. He was buried face down and is said to haunt the area. Which is odd as the hangings wasn’t far away.
Our ancestors were certainly superstitious old fools. I can’t imagine how a farm animal could be bewitched either. Sending my best buddy and catch up soon 😊
Thank you Karen and Shannon, The history of Salem and trials here in Essex, are very similar. I think it’s a fascinating but equally sad piece of history. Catch up with you both soon 😊😊
That was fascinating! Somehow the Salem Witch trials seem to override so many other interesting and important aspects of witch trial history. I think it's such an interesting aspect of Women's history in general. I also never ceases
Thank very much for your comment 😊 I agree that the Salem trials certainly over shadow other aspects witch-hunting across the world in general. It’s a very dark piece of our history and but an equally fascinating one. Women have certainly had to rise above a lot. Catch up soon 😊
Hi Stephen. I really find it so interesting to hear of the stories of the witches. Such sad stories about the women or “witches” really. Thank you for sharing it. 👍😊🇨🇦
Thank you Christine, I agree, they are very sad stories really 🙁 Our histories are full of them. Fascinating but very tragic stories 😊 sending our best and catch up soon
Absolutely fascinating Stephen. I will experience those cross roads very differently from now one. I have learnt a lot and can honestly say, the world today may be confusing and demanding, I am glad I didn't live back then. 🙏 🇳🇱 🙋♀ 🇳🇿
Hi Anita, I’m pleased I didn’t live back then too. The world was a much darker place 😊 it does make me wonder how many old crossroads include a burial or two. A lot of that history is lost, as it wasn’t recorded. Only a few are known as the information has been passed down through the centuries. I look at them very differently too 😊 catch up soon
Fascinating history Stephen. Weren't highway men buried at crossroads as well? It's insane to think people could be murdered on nothing more than superstition. Have a great weekend buddy 👍
Amazing, thank you for telling us this amazing old practice in the past that crossroad are burial ground for witches🙏🏻😅 will remember not to step on to those crossroad grass patch as that might be some burial ground. 🙏🏻👍
A big thank you buddy, and to be honest. I will probably do the same, or at least look at those areas very differently now. Sending my best and catch up soon 😊
First of all, thanks again, Stephan for the German description. A scary story with a valuable historical background. Great research. Sometimes I think you're a history teacher or just read a lot of books. Your last words are correct. The Middle Ages are not over yet. The old non-reformed political religions are incompatible with the more moderate religions. I think that will remain an eternal human problem. All the best to you, pal 🤠🇩🇪👍
Thank you Peter, for your wonderful comment and what you said at the end is very true. It’s a shame too, as they hold back the world from progressing into a much better one. 😊 sending you my very best and catch you on your channel soon 😊
Wow, now this is fascinating! A bit gruesome though…buried with a stake in their heart, crikey!! We’ve never heard of crossroad burials before. The graveyard is stunning though. I really hope that story of Ann Hughes’ resting place is true. I hate it when cows get ‘witched’ 😂🧙♀️🐄 ‘Goofy Mumford’? What a great name, shame about her fate though. Seriously though, really enjoyed that. Top work 🍻
Thank you Wills and Rachel for your very lovely comment 😊 I have been wanting to make this video since I started RU-vid. I just wasn’t sure in which direction to approach the subject. I live very close to these burials and it’s known by all of the locals. The church I was sitting in, is at the top of the lane leading down towards the smallest of the crossroad burial. This church is covered in witch symbols etched into the stone. Essex has a fascinating history, it’s just not often told. Catch up soon guys 😊😊
Hi, Stephen and Yhana. I have never known about"Crossroads" burial places for not only witches but also criminals and suicides in the UK. I can't imagine living in fear of those women accused of being witches just because their belief was different? And still, PPL are persecuted. Well said, Stephen. From now on them I may examine carefully about "crossroads" .... OMG, Stephen...my original comment disappeared..so I am trying to post it here for a short version, hoping for you see it. Appreciate your patience with my comments disappearing.😥Appreciate your patience with my comments disappearing until I figure it out. Please know I always spend time watching videos and composing comments.
Hey buddy, I appreciate your comments a lot, they are very detailed and you put in a huge amount of time with writing 😊 supporting and being part of a community on RU-vid is a big job and a very rewarding one too 😊 I would get very frustrated too if my comments disappeared. Sometimes that can happen if you place dots and no spaces between words (RU-vid treats that as a possible link), although your grammar is perfect 👍 lol 😆 I can imagine crossroad burials happened else where in the world too, possibly even the USA during those early Puritan times. I feel sorry for those lonely souls buried in those bleak places. Sending my best and catch up soon 😊😊
It is true that prejudices have not yet disappeared, only in different and subtle movements and forms of behaviour. This was an interesting story about witches and the crossroads. perfect for this halloween. Thank you lots!
Such tragic times with the so called "Witch" times. Sad too about the suicides. Even today, so little is understood about cognitive disease and depression. Tragic time and yes sadly prejudice still exists today. While most of us don't cause physical harm, some do. I'm afraid that it always will exist. Why, because we're human and have our own flaws. I think this is sad, but tragically true.
Hey guys, I agree. Many still do not understand about depression. It’s a subject I feel very strongly about to be honest. More should be done to better understand. Certainly tragic times during those witch hunts. Awful times to live I imagine. Sending our best and catch up soon 😊
Awwww ❤️❤️❤️ Debs, to be honest I have been talking about you lots and checking on your RU-vid channel regular too. I have missed your presence 😊 I was worried incase something had happened or maybe you just needed a break 😊 xx 😘
