Where is Gold Found in Michigan? This is a tour of Michigan gold mines using the same USGS custom maps as I show in Government Gold Maps (GGM) Here: SourdoughMiner... for more about where and how you can find gold in Michigan.
This time its about Where is Gold In Michigan with another USGS MRDS Review. Take a look at this gold map review to see where has gold been found in Michigan. For more about how to prospect for gold see this presentation: SourDoughMiner.com/GDU/ This resource will help you get started panning for and recovering gold.
I have only worked small areas of the Upper Peninsula however I have found flour gold in every river stream and Creek that I have checked from Marquette to Sault Ste. Marie. The gold is more plentiful the closer you get to Marquette in the streams creeks and rivers. Every Lake Superior beach that has any deposits of black sand I have found gold on. I have also found it on the Lake Michigan side wherever there have been black sand deposits. Sadly it's nothing to get excited about because it's all 100 mesh or smaller and it would take all summer and into the fall to find more than a half an ounce. So no one's going to get rich going after it but for a retired guy like myself it gives me a reason to get out of the house and explore this beautiful area.
Has anybody found gold in the Keewenaw. At 2400 /oz. , I’m sure the prospectors will start rolling in.I live in Houghton and I am going to collect some samples from various streams and beaches to see if it’s worth it.
Yeah not sure if he know everything, we find gold all over the lower peninsula, plus im pretty sure the western up isn't flat, its not the rockies but its definitely not flat!
The brule river that borders Michigan and Wisconsin has gold in it. And there is the remains of a mountain range in Dickinson County that is made up of granite and quartzite with lots of signs of gold in the quartzite but most of it would still be in the rock. As for the diamonds there is 13 kimberlite pipes in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in Iron ,Dickinson and Menominee counties they all contain diamonds but the diamonds are 1 millimeter and smaller. You can still access one of the kimberlite pipes and collect garnets and other things at the lake Ellen kimberlite pipe. The other pipes are all on private land and buried. The only reason this one is accessible is that a logging company dug in to the side of the pipe to use the material as crush gravel on the road. If you go there to collect garnets the best place to find them is on the road next to the pit. I just ran a field trip out there this weekend and got a decent amount. Hope this helps
@@priscillaross-fox9407 no it’s on WE energy land I’m almost positive it’s next to the Michigamme Reservoir. WE Energy land is open to the public for recreational purposes.
@@perrythoen8636 there are 3 rivers that boarder Wisconsin then actually the Montreal river to the west, the Brule River in the middle and the Brule runs into the Menominee River just before the town of Florence Wisconsin. The Menominee river runs all the way to Lake Michigan. I’ve only found gold in the Brule river.
Northern Lower michigan is covered by an ancient sand dune. Up to 165ft of sand on bedrock. With glacial deposits on top of that. The rocks are still here, but the gold dug in deep. Large nuggets were found in the Grand River.
Right, his map doesn't show gold, it just shows gold MINES. Dig far enough down and you never know what you'll find, it's totally random. Minecraft logic 😂😁
Copper prospecting in the Keweenaw Peninsula Michigan, copper in pure nugget form is easy to find, a metal detector would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Not as valuable, but when you can find a handful or more a day it's a lot of fun.
They're saying copper is going to skyrocket too. Sure, it's not like silver or gold but if it's plentiful now might be the time to collect it by the bucketfulls.@fisher46789
There IS gold in the lower peninsula but it's really deep underground. If you sample some of the sand and gravel pits in Central Michigan, you would be VERY surprised. Mostly flakes and flour but pickers as well.
That's only partially right. In the lower parts of Michigan there is a lot of places to find gold. I know plenty of people that have found nuggets and pickers in the rivers and creeks. More so than the flour gold you're referring too. I have lived in Michigan my whole life. Jackpot gold up north but gold to put a smile on your face is definitely in lower Michigan also.
My father left me 400 Acres just outside of Painesdale, but the wolves and bigfoots scared the shit out of me so I stopped going there. It's not worth it and the snow doesn't melt until May. It's shitty property. If you've ever been face to face with wolves it will change your life. They treed me, they had me trapped in a tree screaming for help like a little girl. An ape showed up and scared them off. I haven't been back since
the gold copper and silver are secondary deposits from geothermal intrusions into the igneous basalt's that were laid down in that area before the mid continent rift started to form and then was stopped with compression that folded up the edges of that basalt leaving the cracks and fissures for the intrusions to take place. then the exposed/bent upwards end of the basalt has been weathered down leaving behind valuable minerals at the surface. but because of the nature of this geology and the proximity to the water table and lakes the mines can only operate inside a specific layer. strip mines do it for far cheaper thus the closing of mines in upper Michigan.
I've been saying for years that my father needs to do his property and some other folks I know. Evidents is in the soil. One known factor(good note to take) is that it would sit lower than all other areas surrounding, think a lagoon without water!!
@@mortwally3510, I understand your concern. But the more people we have interested in the hobby, the better chance we have at amending these silly rules about sluicing, panning, and high banking. The Rogue river is a designated trout stream an off limits to panning regardless... which is ridiculous. www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-350-79136_79239_80547-423621--,00.html I've pulled (panning, etc.) more fisherman/hunter lead out of rivers than any so called conservationist. I'm a fisherman and a waterfowl hunter as well, but disagree with the current regulations regarding recreational gold panning and sluicing here in Michigan.
I had a couple of pieces of copper with silver. One had a silver wire, both from the Keweenaw. Umm We got shagged out at gun point almost, of the Ropes Gold Mine in Marquette Co. many years ago. We weren't even near the mine. There are a few other gold mines/prospects in the UP. Most are on private property..
There IS gold in southeast Michigan: Oakland county as a matter of fact. I found a piece of gold and silver ore. The sun was at just te right hour to shine down on it. Pretty cool.
My neck of the woods! 👍 Here is where Heidi and Conan Gold Prospecting looks and makes our videos! Super excited to see you look at this for us and share it! 👏👏👏
Yes ! I found my rock from a gravel delivery to my drive way. Lots of the rocks have gold. Some of the silver rocks could be platinum? Would like to send to you, to check mine. In the gravel pits.
nice mapping but are there public beach mining in Michigan on Lake superior to go to on a vacation trip to get that flour gold or gpaa claims in those areas. and thank you for sharing.
Lower Michigan is loaded with fine flour gold. It is almost everywhere. I find it in almost any sandy area I have tested. It is -50 or -100 mesh flour gold though and hard to process in any quantity. I often find a lot of black and garnet sand mixed in with the gold which makes separation tough.
Hi, I'm looking to get into panning. I live in Michigan. The DNR is saying on the wet lands map, the color yellow indicated on the map is the only place you can pan. I live in Grand Rapids, so would you know if this is correct. Doesn't leave much to pan.
There's a club in Michigan (GPAA) They have a couple spots they meet up at. One in Athens, mi south of battle creek and a campsite in Ionia, mi called barkus. Rules are confusing but I know you can't pan in trout streams. If you are out there doing small scale panning, nobody will likely bother you. The sluices and dredges are what they are more worried about
Hey, how many of you have found gold in the lower penninsula of Michigan? (Comment below) One of the viewers said they found over an ounce in a day in an area in the lower penninsula not shown on the USGS, (Big hint gold may not be shown in these maps)
Gravel bars in St. Clair County, small feeder creeks, and other Black River tributaries have flour gold in small quantities. Also black sands on the beach areas of Lake Huron have gold as well, though small amounts. Higher concentrations can be found in some of the hard pan cracks in some of the creeks (Boy Scout Camp Silver Trails in Silver Creek) or under large boulders. Mill creek is also another light producer in the gravel beds near Ruby, MI. Those same beds also produce lots of fossils too. In Oceana and Mason County, MI in small streams feeding the Pere Marquette River also have produce flour and some flake gold for me. Even some private property ditch culverts will collect fine gold from run off from the higher gravel areas. Know on the public lands that those are trout streams and the DNR will be on you if you are panning out of the season.
Prospector Jess I find flour gold here and there near southwestern Michigan. Muskegon river and white river dump into the big lake and the black sands have some. Looking for a good way to remove it.
The issue being I think is. Soooo many places have had major excavation done repeatedly throughout the last few decades. Water front in most rivers and lakes. Even small channels. I actually would like to see a map of areas completely untouched by construction. Not much..
@@andrewgrudzinskas5778 thanks for replying. But I'm in touch with Peter Rose, minerals management for the DNR. I have emails from him saying lower michigan is off limits to panning.
Me too. Farmington Hills. I heard Near Jackson MI Grand River may find Gold. Its hard to believe with so many lakes and Rivers around W Bloomfield and Kensington Park theres no gold
Few years back i was doin some metal detecting out in the yard. Thing started beeping like crazy an said gold. Me an a buddy dug down about a foot an found a big black chunk of coal lookin thing, ran the detector over it an it started goin nuts again. We sprayed it off with the hose an started seein these big chunks of "gold" all over it.. Thought we were rich for a second, took a better look an figured out it was copper LMAO.. Not exactly sure what it was but after some Googling I'm pretty sure it was "copper ore"?? That was in Oakland county michigan. Tried busting it apart to see if there was any gold in it but didn't find any, just lots of quarter size chunks of copper. Thought about takin it to the scrap yard lol...
There is a crick on on my grandfather's property. Rock after rock after rock I find quartz. 5 rocks and 3 of them I found quartz (one of them very pretty). Can that be a gold baring crick?
@@silver_salvage_savage yes there is one hard rock mine. There is a sample of white quartz with free mill gold in it at the A.E. Seaman Geology museum at Michigan Tech that came from the Ropes gold mine in Ishpeming. only hard rock mine I know about in Michigan for Gold.
Geologically, shelter bay is the dividing line in the U.P and everything west of that point is bedrock/Precambrian rock at the surface or close to it as opposed to the eastern U.P which is compromised of a thick sandstone layer. The lower peninsula is unique in that it has several miles thick glacial till plus a several miles thick layer of deposits that were deposited in a major depression when the earth was covered in water. So with all that said is why you'll do better prospecting in the western U.P because more minerals are at the surface. This isn't to say you can't find gold in the lower or eastern U.P but, that gold would be deposited by the glaciers. **So Hemlock MI is the geographical center of MI, bedrock is 18 miles down at that point and for this reason a major earthquake in MI is almost non existent BUT, if it does happen we are in trouble!
There is gold on every road in Michigan,10 cents for every can you pick up and turn in,much faster and all u need is eyes and a bunch of Walmart bags.u can make 100 bucks a day just walkin 😊😊😊😊😊
Designated trout stream, off limits for gold recovery of any type, unfortunately.... www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-350-79136_79239_80547-423621--,00.html
I have found something in a bags of sand that I bought from Lows store and not sure if it’s real gold on those rocks !Can anybody tell me anything? Its gold on rocks!
Why bother? With the laws Michigan has, you can only harvest one troy ounce a year, and can't use certain equipment that makes it easy to process the material like sluices.
I live in Mi. , I found some white Crystal rocks with lots of gold , it looks like gold, also some silver color looking flakes, in it it's Flat Crystal rock white slit layers,.
Check our mining flour gold on the shores of Lake Superior. Guys do it mostly as a labor of love, nobody is getting filthy rich, but they are keepin plenty of beer in the cooler. Enough to go to the Casino and play “big shot” every few months. Pretend rich. Can’t fish for perch no more, they’re all gone. Might as well work hard for a few bucks of gold. It’s the American way.
Wow, I’m supposed to listen to you and you don’t even understand what you’re saying we find great golden Saginaw Valley Grand Rapids his nuggets as big as your fingernail and add Leah Sabo is Guy gold in the rifle river there’s guys that make your whole living for the whole year out of the river you sure you know what you’re talking about
I have Flint river gold. Its everywhere. Especially in dried up creek trails, low bank curves and in the spillways. Plenty of 1/4 gram pickers around here too.
@@midsfb near the watershed area next to my friends house, when its really low we pull out sediment from branches and any large rocky areas above the flood line and we check the sharp bends when its low. We already have about 5 grams so far
Respond to the lower Michigan and not having no gold it’s not there’s no golden water Michigan is that the government has put so many rules and regulations. I’m getting a gold it’s not worth your time or energy. Michigan is one of the worst places in the United States to search for gold, because of the rules and regulations, not because there is no gold.
3:27 good god I’ve been studying horticulture for too long, I thought flower gold meant they looked like little flower pedals, now I understand that it’s referring to the powdery texture of milled and pulverized grains, thanks!
@@priscillaross-fox9407 if anything worthwhile is there they will not let you close. Having said that, suffice material has to be deposited from a mountain, valley/canyon. That's been gone in any significant amount since the 1870s. They know you're wasting your time and money. You have a 0.001% chance of finding something meaningful. You have a 10% chance of finding enough to even pay for the gas and effort. With a 💯% of wasting time. I have 6 childhood friends the work in three different mines, in the upper-peninsula. We're all in our 40s. 😂 good luck 🤞
