@@WocklessGamingforAnimeMoms i hate anime, velvet underground is overhyped trash. I thought the beatles got too much praise but these fucking dweebs are basic bettys
Loaded is liked by people who shop at Forever 21 or whatever or isn't "avant garde" enough, whatever you want to say but it has some great numbers on it still like Rock and Roll and others. Squeeze is genuinely fucking terrible. It is a bad album.
That's kind of a snob opinion dude, you probably like the self title because it is easier to digest. Why do you think many of your favorite artists regard them with high praise? because they're all snobs? Give this band some more time.
There’s nothing wrong with liking the more commercial and conventional sounding records from VU. But to chalk up their first two albums as “it influenced punk so that’s why it’s important” is a gross and insulting over simplification. It’s like calling the Beatles or Beach Boys a 50s revival band that made nothing special except annoying love songs. To each their own I guess, but it’s weird hearing it’s not interesting from a “music nerd”
You have ruined the entirety of my 5 minute smoke break by putting white light white heat at the bottom of a velvet underground album ranking... hopefully you are remorseful.
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. The first two records can be abstract and hard for first time listeners. It’s an album that rewards for every relisten you give it
I mean it’s either you like em or you don’t but for me Lou reed has beautiful lyrics interesting musical palate especially with John cale, there my favorite group of all time and the fact that squeeze is above white light white heat is blasphemous lol
If you don't get why the debut is great, is because you probably haven't read Lou Reed's lyrics, or Lyrics are just not your thing. Or in general, the entire album is not your cup of tea. I think the album is genius. I think it's a masterpiece. It's not something you would say after just one listen with this album. But eventually, it will click someday. It's not just that the debut is influential. It's that it's completely groundbreaking, even today. They totally broke the entire conventions of music at the time, making something truly unique that still sounds unique and groundbreaking today. It's not often that a rock band come to such extreme measure of experimentation while still sounding this raw, unique, and maintaining this high level of poetry and innovation. It's a masterpiece, but from your rankings, I can see you're not really into experimental Stuff, especially with Loaded being your number 2, and White Light your last. It's not your cup of tea. But it's stupid to not recognize the level of artistic genius and innovation Lou Reed and members of the velvet underground made with this album. Even if you don't like it, you can't deny it's artistic genius.
couldn't have said it better. although lou still wrote the lyrics in the succeeding albums after WLWH, the music doesn't compliment the words as much as in the first 2 with john cale.
David Bowie was a fan, and he knew music, so…..😊 Some of the VU’s spark was ignited by the creative tension between Cale and Reed. I’m not a fan of songs about heroin or amphetamines but the conflict of their styles was interesting.
Some songs I highly recommend that’ll be good to get you going: - Ride into the Sun - Oh Sweet Nuthin - Sweet Jane - After Hours - Pale Blue Eyes - Sunday Morning - Who Loves the Sun
1. The Velvet Underground & Nico 2. White Light/White Heat 3. Loaded 4. The Velvet Underground 5. VU 6. Another One It really goes to show that you haven't listened to the band enough to make that inane ranking. Also don't consider Squeeze as a true VU album!
had the same reaction on first listen but i re listened and now it my tvu&n is one of my favorite albums. I think the album has the best texturing on any album i have listened to.
The Velvets are the kids in an alley dealing drugs, wearing all black, with switchblades and they don't let you cross them or kick it with them 😂 they ain't like anyone or anything and they'll start songs really good, then eff it up just to piss you off 😂 so I can definitely understand why you don't like it. The older I got, the more I started to like them cause I started to like more proto punk and 70s punk since it's more glam, melodic, psychedelic and drug influenced rather than 80s hardcore. For me I got into them because the girl who drums for them Moe Tucker, drums super tight, and subtle and super consistent and the more you listen to it with headphones or high quality speakers you can hear that they're music has actually pretty heavy riffs. Idk they're not the heaviest band but for the 60's that sh** goes pretty hard, I ain't know anyone else in that time who was wearing black and shades singing bout tricks, hoes and drug dealers lol! 🕶️👠🚬
As a Velvet fan, I can respect the opinion but putting Squeeze above White Light? I'll ignore the bias that being WL is my fav album and I can understand why some wouldn't like. It's their most experimental album and Sister Ray is pure ugliness to most people but at least it had the Velvet Underground. Squeeze was just Doug who was just a fill in for John Cale.
Sure it's loud and hard to listen to, but you will never get this music out of your head. And then all other music you listen to, you're realize that it's all been VU the whole time
You have no idea - they have always been a huge pioneering influence - don't look for commercial success - the most influential group of the 20th Century - where did the best Bowie come from? Iggy Pop?. The beatles were commercially successful but they were not influential.
Idk dude, listen to it again, you just gotta fall into it or not. but I’ll subscribe you put down one of my favorite bands while making it feel like you weren’t.
It's so very ironic that a routined music critic is saying exactly that on the first listen. I guess Lou Reed wasn't all that wrong with his usual stance on the profession. So many decades have passed... some things don't change I suppose.
A lot of people in the comments are calling you a snob for having an opinion of an art then telling you why you should like it 😭 I love the VU but its not for everyone and thats okay
Oof, you're killing me here. The gray album is great, every bit as worthy and valuable as the first two records, but there's no denying VU ans Nico and White Light/White Heat are the two important ones. Absolute classics, two of my favs of all time, but I will say it can take some time to warm up to them. You especially need to be in the right mindset with WLWH, whereas VU and Nico has enough variety to where I think it'll click faster for most people. Spend a bit more time with them and I think they'll rise higher up on the list. Loaded is overrated and doesn't have Moe on it, while Squeeze isn't a real Velvets record.
Sorry, mate, can't agree with the ranking here, especially if you put Squeeze over White Light. I think I can say, you do not understand the core of what makes the Velvets the Velvets, why they are special in the first place; chalking it up as the progenitors of punk, you don't see the bigger picture, their influence over everything. Maybe this is a biased review, and if so, then fine. But I still stand by it: Squeeze is not a Velvets record, I say it's a Doug Yule solo album, and the canonical four, as I like to call it, as just masterpieces, no question about it.
Their debut goes all over the place, so it's just a matter of giving every song at least 15 seconds of your time and knowing what you get with VU. You like distorted and crazy experimental? White Light White Heat. Their mellow stuff? Loaded, Squeeze. Something imbetweenie? Their self tittled. Then again, they dgaf about internal album cohesion, so you can't really expect a unique genre inside an album
It's a Psych Rock Band, just a very dark one. They had a decent cult following at the time was my impression. I'd recommend listening to White Light/White Heat and Loaded. The Self Titled is solidly mid except for The Murder Mystery and Jesus (the two best tracks of the record).
Tragically confusing list, though your taste is yours alone & thats whats special about the band. VU&Nico, as well as white light white heat were the two great albums made under the original line up including John Cale. The influence and artistry here is unparalleled imo. Music circles absolutely celebrated their contributions, even at the time. They were drawing from the experimental and underground art scenes in New York, notably people like La Monte Young and John Cage. Brian Eno once described their debut with Nico as so inspiring and important to music that everyone who bought a copy started a band. David bowie described it as having a greater contribution to modern music than that of any of the Beatles records. I'm Waiting For The Man, Venus in Furs, etc. are masterpieces and wildly enjoyable to me. White Light, White Heat was the first real noise rock project! Nirvana, Sonic Youth & many others owe a huge debt to the ground breaking work here! Its not for everyone, but give "The Gift" or, "Here She Comes Now" a go! Their grey self title swapped out Cale for Doug Yale; definetly think its the best place to start, with the great song writing of Lou Reed, and a much more intimate, folkly sound. SQUEEZE however... Involved no member from the original lineup, no contributions from lou reed. It was a project headed by Doug Yule and is... Probably best forgotten. No continuity with the previous albums, uninspired songwriting, little to no later influence and a very poor critical reception. Hope you give their earlier stuff another go! Very much feel like theres a lot to get out of these albums.
Its was acc good music, people didn’t just started to love tvu because they were influential for punk music and thats why "they should think its good" 💀
Logistically wrong velvet underground and Nico should always be on their cause it’s one of the first art rock Albums and proved that people could write beyond folk music songs of deep meaning
They have a cool band name that's 99% of it as for the music it's boring like elevator music plus talk singing which can't hold a candle to Lou Reed's later New York record. Walk on the Wide Side and Sweet Jane are all you need to know from them.
I don’t get them BUT letter me jabber on and make recommendations… Cognitive dissonance anyone? Shut up why do you talk? Love to hear your insight on that. BTW, I don’t know the difference between a hammer and a drill but gimme a shout if you need an addition built on your house. Life is too short. Knock it off. Here’s a simple equation; If you have nothing to say, say nothing. Very admirable. Consider pondering this while your mouth is still. Rock on.
You put squeeze above white light/white heat.. wtf is wrong with you.. you don’t deserve to rate them if that’s your ranking.. you have made an enemy sir.. and I don’t appreciate you disrespecting my favorite band
There were actually fairly well known in the 60s, as my grandfather (UK) told me about how he and his friends used to listen to them in university in the late 60s
actually, yes lol drugs loosen you up. no shame in it, your body your choice and drugs save lives as much as they destroy em. Rock & Roll has a lot to do with drugs first of all. Lol
No offense, but I'm not surprised you don't get The Velvet Underground. Or Lou Reed's later work. Some people just can't connect with skuzzy hardcore shit like Lou Reed created. It's too real for some folks. I like your stuff, but I suspect you put ketchup on hotdogs...
I would say listen to Loaded first. It's the more radio friendly songs that are more poppy. Then listen to the other ones. Velvet Underground & Nico has 2 more mainstream sounding songs and a lot of weird shit, that upon many listens is great. The other ones have some good tracks. If you can't appreciate VU you have shit taste, sorry Simpsons Comic Book Bro, those albums totally belong on the list. Every relevant rock musician was influenced by them heavily.
A lot of people in the comments are calling you a snob for having an opinion of an art then telling you why you should like it 😭 I love the VU but its not for everyone and thats okay
