Sometimes it’s obvious why we see ourselves the way we do, and why we might have unfair expectations.
If you’ve had someone in your life who was overly critical or mean, it makes sense those messages might stick with you. Sometimes it’s less clear.
Sometimes our expectations come from what I needed to do to be accepted. That can mean that it comes from what I was valued for. “People accept me when I achieve” can become “I must always be achieving” and can help us understand why I might never quite feel like I’ve done enough.
Being able to identify where it comes from can allow you to ask:
Whose messages are these?
Were those messages ever really fair?
Would I want to impose these messages on anyone else?
And that might bring me to:
What messages do I want to give myself instead?
