Enjoy this section on the SP's racetrack Peninsula and look to our website for the full DVD - as well as many other great productions at www.cspmovies.com
See the SP “commutes” on the Peninsula in late steam and early diesel days. Visit the old Third & Townsend Station where the SP Coastline really begins. Don’t miss the FM Train Master era, including the smaller FM H-12-44 switchers in various San Francisco Peninsula yards - such as the extinct Bay Shore Yard.
Learn the mechanical details of the FM opposed-piston diesel engines with animated cut-away graphics. The old 1920 Harriman type commuter coaches and the first bi-level are seen behind passenger GP9s, SD-9s and FM trainmasters. Newer power includes the powerful SDP45 machines and the smaller GP40Ps - even in 1976 Bi-Centennial colors!
We bring lots of old ALCO, Baldwin, FM and early EMD power. And, we have that on vintage film.
Also, we bring more freight action on the Eastbay side and visit the old W. Oakland Yard. See the ALCO switchers and older EMD switchers work the yard alongside the heavy road locomotives at the sand tower. Ride former SP passenger GP9 5623 down Oakland streets switching freight for the Oakland Terminal Railway, on former Key System tracks.

These old diesels are more interesting than the modern ones. The modern have nearly all the same shape.

There was so much going on in the SF Bay Area, and the railroad history is incredible! Plus, so many soldiers came thru California on troop trains.

I grew up in Mountain View and remember taking the Vasona Branch SP from Loyola Corners to The City - the train passed the Los Altos station, then snaked behind Gunn Highschool, crossed El Camino Real and joined up with the main SP line near the California Avenue station in Mayfield - most of the Peninsula was farm land at that time - they must have printed a lot of tickets because years after the line was abandoned in 1964 they still listed "Loyola Corners" as a destination - even today the old timers refer to CalTrain as "The SP"

The station was at 3rd and Townsend with a strong chain link fence with the red wooden slats through the fence all the way to fourth street until late 2000 to 2001. Tracks paved over on fourth and caltrain set up across the street also on 4th. The gate was always open on Townsend and all the way from the back of the station, all through the platforms and tracks, all the way to fourth they're was campers parked in there and a ton of tents and shanties. Also, at least in the bay area, train masters were plentiful and constantly and well used all over, every day, hauling huge long trains. Those engines were usually filthy and I loved seeing them. Those lasted like that all the way until the end of sp.

Pure heavy freight locomotives (no matter if they have passenger service modifications) pulling passenger trains is badass.

I love the FM H24-66 trainmaster diesels.I remember seeing one on the Jersey Central Railroad in Wilkes Barre, PA back in the early 1960s. The sound of its 12 cylinder opposed piston diesel engine is awesome!!!
