I'm British and dated a girl from Toronto for five years, and not only could I not tell where other North Americans were from, but she couldn't either. One time in the supermarket in the UK, we could hear an NA accent, and I asked her if they were Canadian or American. She couldn't tell. So we walked to the other end of the supermarket and could still hear them, so we concluded they were from the US.

Europeans do that with every English speaker. A woman was rude and demanding at a French restaurant. The waiter walks away, cursing stupid dumb Americans. The only problem is she was Norwegian, who knew English.

yeah, even tho i do think americans on average are louder than canadians, that doesn't mean you can tell the difference with just that lol, there is high energy louder type people in canada and there are quiet "keep to yourself" type americans....i know people from both of those personality groups who are from both canada and america the only real tell there is, is if someone pronounces "about" like "aboot"....like, canadians pronounce everything with an "oo" sound that, in america, sounds like "ow"

It always annoys me when people complain about someone saying Columbus "discovered" America. You don't have to be the first person to ever see or do something to be able to discover it for yourself or others. It's like if you're driving home from work and you take a different street that's 5 minutes quicker, you just "discovered" a new route for yourself. It doesn't mean other people didn't already know about that route. Children are constantly making "discoveries as they grow. The first time they see a Bumble Bee, that's a new discovery for them. A few weeks ago I discovered a new recipe for a delicious chicken and broccoli dish, I didn't create the recipe though and others knew about it, but I discovered it for myself. It's the same with Columbus, no he wasn't the first person to know about the continent. But the people of Europe didn't know about it, so he "discovered" it for the people of Europe.

The point you make about about the number of continents you might think there are is dependant on when / where you were at school reminds me of a recurring question that has been asked on the UK TV show "QI" various times over the last 20 years - "How many moons does the earth have?". There is a compilation of these on the QI RU-vid channel, titled "QI Compilation | Alan VS The Moon(s)". Never sure how well known QI is outside the UK, but if you've not come across it before you might find it "Quite Interesting".

11:40: there is a film with a similar premise: "Run Lola Run". (It's in German but I believe there exists an English version or at least English subtitles). The title character experiences the same day in 4 different ways. The only original difference is the exact second on which she leaves her house. One second earlier or two seconds later and her life takes dramatically different turns...

What you say around 2:40 about translating names is interesting. In English we seem to have largely stopped doing it in the late 19th century. It does make a difference, because, say, the name of King Frederick William of Prussia sounds less sinister and 'other' to us than his descendant Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, for instance. The King of Spain who launched the Armada against England was Philip II, but we call the current Spanish King Felipe VI. Odd when you think about it. edit: On other points, CGPGrey has a video about the number of continents, and Bill Bryson's book "Made in America" contains some of the other names that the US founding fathers considered adopting.

W vid choice gangsta, always down for some geography. Kinda random, but: in addition to commenting and liking these videos, I encourage everyone here to click “share” and then click “copy link” - even if you don’t plan on sending it to anyone. This action alone constitutes a share to the algorithm. It takes two seconds and is an often overlooked but significant factor in boosting visibility of RU-vid videos that you find worthy and enjoyable. This goes for any content that you would like to see better represented on the platform, of course.

(The opportunity cost of choosing to give has never been the loss of another zero in the balance, so what difference does it REALLY make, anyway?) To me, it's a fair exchange of value; I'm going to try to keep the doting to a minimum, but you have a knack beyond what I think you realize for being behind a camera and making literally anything interesting. In English, CURRENT and recent monarch names are NOT translated. So, for example, the King of Spain is Felipe VI not Philip VI, even though all previous Felipe's are almost always referred to as Philip in English. Same with Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden (all previous Carl's are called Charles in English). I didn't know that Elizabeth II was called Isabel in Spanish. Queens named Isabella in Spain or Portugal are not called Elizabeth in English.

Love the “how many continents are there?” conversation: I recently got into a debate with a friend from Colombia about it. I was raised saying North America/South America whereas she says it’s just America. But you’ve got to think that if you say it’s just the one continent of America, that logic should push you to the conclusion there are only four continents: America, Eurasica (Europe, Asia, Africa), Australia, and Antarctica.

North America (including the Aleutians, south to the Colombian border and Trinidad, Bermuda, and Greenland) 4. South America 5. Asia (west to the Urals, SW to the Sinai, S to the Seychelles, SE to Singapore, E to the Kurils) 6. Oceania (not even getting started on this one. Its HUGE. 7. Canada and the United States sound similar because all the cities of North America share a “metropolitan” accent. It’s only when you leave the cities into the more rural areas do the accents come out strong. I think there are 2 reasons for this: 1. Cities are generally filled with people from all over, and must adapt to better communicate with each other, speaking more clearly and pronouncing everything as best as possible. 2. Rural regions are generally more tight nit with people who grew up together with a lot of inside jokes and slang from families going back generations. The accent is usually thickest with the elderly, and comes out strong when people are free to be themselves without worrying what anyone else thinks of them. I grew up in Atlantic Canada and would always talk a certain way with my friends and family, but then I travelled across Canada for work, eventually settling down in Quebec. When I took my SO home to the maritimes, she noted that I suddenly started talking completely different and with a heavy accent, which I didn’t even realize I was doing. On top of this, my family remarked that I’ve started to take on a Québécois French accent from living here so long.

America is a continent in both views; you can divide it in North and South, geophysically, and North, Central, South and Caribbean islands, geopolitically. Antarctica is a continent in both views. Of course if you say the letter "Z" as "Zed" instead of "Zee", that's a dead give away too.

I don't see the point of arguing about how many continents there are. It doesn't seem like something you can really disagree on, it's just different meanings of the same word. Like arguing about whether the word "last" means final or means a form to build a shoe around. Or which of two forms of fried potatoes the word "chip" refers to. Multiple meanings exist. Multiple systems of continents exist.

i was taught there are 7 continents (people who was thaught there are 6 probably considered Europe and Asia as Eurasia and that makes sense because it's a same "piece of land" but for some they are different continents because they're different linguistically and ethnically, and people who were taught 5 probably considered 2 Americas as one)

In our school system we have 6 continents as we consider North and South America two continents. Also we Consider Europe and Asia Two separate continents. So we have Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, North America, South America. Although I can understand why other people might consider Eurasia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, America

@nari5025
@nari5025 8 месяцев назад
@@NoProtocol Colonias were a thing way before cristobal. Romans used to name their cities in new settlements for example 'Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium' which you would today know simply as Cologne. I indeed never thought about Columbus' 'english' name. Christopherus Columbus looks fairly latinized to me, and it seems to have been a thing in renaissance europe to give yourself a latin name if you were somewhat important. Given he was Italian not even that much of a stretch. English in general seems to have held on to a lot of latin. And given their quarrels at the time they were probably glad not having to remember his spanish moniker.

There are 7 major continental plates, therefore there are 7 continents. The only other argument would be 17ish continents: 7 Major and ~10 minor plates. But that's sort of a Pluto isn't a planet situation. Anyway, 7. There are 7 continents. And 8 planets

There's no reason to stop referring to the USA as America. It's simply a shortened version of our name and there's absolutely no confusion whatsoever when people speak of the American people or the American president or the American military or the American economy.

I thought it was interesting that you mentioned the Newfie (Newfoundland) Accent, I'm no expert and base my obeservations purely on watching the TV drama The Republic of Doyle set in Newfoundland, that because it was seperated from mainland Canada it retained most of it British Isles origins and the Irish influence on the region's culture and language is still present today, which has likely contributed to the development of a distinct accent in the area. The accent spoken in Newfoundland and Labrador is known as Newfoundland English, and it has a distinct mix of Irish, English, and West Country dialects.

@@CaptainAmerica001 North America and South America are continents. There is nowhere simply called America. The United States of America is only a country and refers to only a portion of the landmass named "the Americas" as it was by European explorers/colonialists. The Americas included every modern country from Canada to Chile. Continental landmasses are determined by continental plates, large areas of land grouped together by geographical location or divided by large bodies of water or mountain ranges.

If you want to complicate the question of how many continents there are you could always wrangle a geologist into the conversation. I have vague recollections of semantic arguments about using tectonic plates to define continents which can get into the weeds over multi-plate continents and submerged or partially submerged tectonic plates.

An alternative is that is named after Richard ap Meryk, anglicised to Richard Amerike (or Ameryk) (c. 1440-1503) was a British merchant, royal customs officer and later, sheriff of Bristol. Several claims have been made for Amerike by popular writers of the late twentieth century. One was that he was the major funder of the voyage of exploration launched from Bristol by the Venetian John Cabot in 1497, and that Amerike was the owner of Cabot's ship, the Matthew. Ap means that Richard was Welsh in origin, ap Meryk means son of Meryk .

Translating names is a good laugh since it wheels back around. The english john becomes sean in irish gaelic (anglicised) which then comes back to england alongside john. From that the already anglicised spelling of sean gets further anglicised to form shaun and shawn, which also sit alongside sean, john, jon and jean, which is the french john or another spelling for jane, which is the female john.
