It's not really our place to assume or speculate about his life or choices based upon his public persona. It's entirely possible that he simply wanted to prioritize his mental health and personal growth, which is quite commendable in this age of constant media scrutiny.

From the Bible (im paraphrasing a little bit here) - it is better to lose the whole world and all its wealth than to lose your very soul. Chandler is trying to find peace and keep his soul healthy. Power to him.
