A very valid reason could be much simpler. And that is that they dont want their advance jet signatures to be tracked, and countered by nato flying AWACS and other spaying equipment. Since then they can develop counter strategies for Russian systems. And This may also signify that Putin sees a very real possibility of confrontation with NATO in the coming future.

Russian tactics of war is different to the western. West do carpet bombings and Russia 1st exhaust the war stamina from the opponent and then finish the war quicker. You will see this. Also it took 36 days for USA and NATO to carpet bomb entire Afghanistan. Their boot came to Kabul after 2 months the help of nothren alliance. Also keep in mind Taliban don't have 2 lackh regular Army or stinger missiles, still USA took very long.

@@someone11233 we were not having BVR missiles... our aircraft would've been sitting ducks against IAF. Our F-16s were also not upgraded because of sanctions... In this case, Russia is in charge of manufacturing and upgradation of it's own aircraft
