This video also addresses an important question that seems to have mixed answers on RU-vid: Where on the racket face should the ball be struck to generate topspin? Harry says that the ball should be struck above center so that the ball slides (briefly) towards the center during contact. This is what I have just found to be true - to the extent that the ball is hitting where I’m aiming the hit to be on the racket face. Some other RU-vid videos say that the pros hit below center for topspin which is why the face closes after contact during pronation. I agree with Harry! I just recently found this channel and it’s covering a wide range of topics that are benefiting from Harry’s insight. Thank you!

The main point being that to get a noticeably larger sweet spot, you need a noticeably larger frame, like the change from 65 sq inch wooden rackets to 100 sq inch graphites. Small changes from like 98 sq inch to 100 sq inch makes no meaningful difference in sweetspot, unless you're Federer. The actual sweetspot is exactly that, a spot, where you will feel no twisting. Basically about 1 inch square in the centre. But the playable area, which has been well described here, is about 4 tennis balls size near the centre. Anything hit outside of that will have massively less power and accuracy, to be essentially a shank. Another handy reference is the interiors of the manufacturer's logo stencils, apart from Babolat of course.

This was excellent video on the sweet spot of the tennis strings. Now I’m going paint my strings with stencil paint and see where I actually contact the ball on the strings. Thank you for the video

2:35. On forehands, only Federer, Nadal and Dimitrov hit with and extended arm. Only Federer looks exactly at the point of contact. Nadal and Dimitrov do a little bit. Murray, Thiem, Zverev, Kyrgios, Wawrinka, Tsonga, they all look almost at the front instead of to the contact point. Even more, in some pictures, Thiem is with his eyes closed. But I get your point, you have to tell the students to watch the contact point.

I'm going to suggest an experiment that I bet came to a lot of people's mind while watching this. Can you stencil an entire racquet face, have Coach Gu hit with it for a few hours, and see where he his making contact the most?

Back in the day with wood racquets, the sweet spot was (supposedly) below the center of the racquet face. Today the sweet spot seems to be above the center of the racquet face. If you see photos of pros when they hit, it seems that the contact point is above center.

I use a gut poly blend and I can tell I really hit the ball in the top right of the sweet spot mostly

Hey I have a question about rackets. I wanted to switch to a new tennis racket. Right now I play with the Pure Strike 100. I really like the feel of the racket, but I need maybe a LITTLE bit heavier and more durable racket. If you have and suggestions that would help a lot.

8:00 talking about sweet spot in different places for different level players. Sweet spot doesn't change, contact point does. If you hit a kick serve, you will have some wear higher on face.

@tennisspin - Harry, got a question for you. Will rackets go on sale when the new version is released or does the manufacture take them all back? I am looking at the Vcore 95, want to see whether I should wait until after the new one is released to get the older version on discount.

So does balance effect the sweet spot at all? Would a 31cm racquet versus say a 33 cm racquet have different sweetspots?

Yes the proper way to hit is to watch the ball through contact but the vast majority of pros actually don’t do it, just Federer and maybe a few others. They’ve hit so many shots that they get clean contact every time even without watching the ball that long

Just a question, are full synthetic strings good for the Wilson clash?
@miguelbarahona6636
@miguelbarahona6636 3 года назад
Yes. String selection depends on your needs, not the racket needs. More durability/control? poly. More comfort? natural gut or multifilament. Lower cost? Synthetic gut.

If you know absolutely nothing about Tennis racquets and Physics, this was actually a very good layman's introduction to what is a sweet spot. But if you want to understand say why is it that your new Ezone 98 is far more jarring to your arm than your old DR 98 (even though your technique hasn't changed), you'll need to go somewhere else.

Can you explain it here because I was just about to ask Harry if the YONEX ISOMETRIC was more technology or more marketing hype. I've never used a Yonex but sensed quality of workmanship just watching others use them for decades!
@Richibald1

Wider throat braces, wider elliptical frame would be my hunch. Like I say never used one.... YET! Hopefully that's about to change. Wawrinka's accuracy, Kyrigos blinding power are valuable clues IMHO

Should it even be called a sweet spot? More like sweet zone as opposed to badminton contact point where the optimum power x control can only be had from a small contact point. I don't know for sure but I suppose the need for a bigger racket, giving a larger contact area is the due to a bigger object that is being hit. A ball as opposed to a shuttle. Inane comment, sorry. But I can't sleep

@@islandmerchandise3017 yep, sadly the world is full of guys working in/owning pro shops who literally talk as if they've played on centre court at Wimbledon but when you see them try and hit the ball you're like, ' they're playing something but it's definitely not tennis!' It's pretty cringeworthy and a bit weird to be honest. Harry should stick to shoes and strings because he knows zero about playing tennis ( unless self taught club hacking is your thing ).
