"Where is Wendy Williams?" - Exploring the Complexities of Her Life and Struggles

In 2022, Mark Ford and Erica Hanson, the executive producers of the revealing new docuseries, “Where is Wendy Williams” (now available on Lifetime), set out to chronicle the return of one of daytime’s loudest and most popular voices. What they found was a lonely woman in crisis despite being placed under guardianship by New York State. Ford and Hanson discuss remaining nimble in their approach to documenting Wendy Williams’ struggle with alcoholism and her descent into dementia; being stonewalled by the system allegedly in place to protect her; earning the trust of the Williams family, and filmmaking as a form of health advocacy.

@@maggieblueskies2100 Yes, the wealthy do hoard and hide their wealth. However when a court puts you under a conservatorship, all of your assets are frozen and managed by a third party. Also, Wendy is rich, but she is far from a billionaire. Rich is a spectrum. Most people on TV are at the lower end of rich. They're like the working class of the wealthy world. Which is what keeps them always wanting more, no matter how much they have.

You mean to tell me the guardian really thinks she is more entitled to Wendy’s $$ than Wendy’s son who was accused of over spending for a birthday party his mom threw for him and allowing him to eat whatever as a college student who probably doesn’t cook?! THIS. IS. WRONG.
@millana100
@millana100 5 месяцев назад
The $100,000 party and outrageous Uber Eats bill is actually considered financial abuse. I work with dementia patients and family members/guardians/trustees are required to look out for the patients finances to prevent these types of things from happening. No one in their right mind would allow that much money to be spent on food delivery. Wendy was not in the right state of mind to approve such spending, this is why it's abuse.
@deed2157
@deed2157 5 месяцев назад
@@millana100 Wendy has said she wants to leave all her money to her son. Wendy was already paying his bills and rent. The guardian isn't really looking out for Wendy when there was no food in her home and she was still drinking when she was living in her apt in NYC. She would order breakfast at 730am and sometimes the guardian would respond at 12:30. Wendy's friend in L.A had to sometimes pay food for her in NYC. This guardian is already being sued by another person who claims that she and lawyers working with her were trying to scam him/her into an unwarranted guardianship in order to get access to him/her money
@jeffmonroe6317
@jeffmonroe6317 5 месяцев назад
I don't think 100 grand in a month is outrageous at all considering who she is. A retired celebrity, with a bunch of money... spending it with her family. What the hell else are parents working toward? They die, and leave the money to their kids. I garuntee you, the Wendy Williams show had outside investors, which centered around her name and talent. And I garuntee those investors lobbied a judge set that all in motion. Dave Chappelle tried to explain it, but this documentary inadvertently showed it.

And after she came back from that "wellness center" in the first episode, her crazy seemed way more ramped up.

@@jeffmonroe6317 Wendy isn't old. She's also not on her death bed. Her dementia means she will likely not have any further income. She needs to save and spend wisely when there are no future earnings. She doesn't appear to have latent income. If her son continued to spend like that, she would be broke in no time. He's young and doesn't seem to have his own earnings.

Melissa Rivers, you are beyond a real friend and advocate. Thank you for taking interest and bringing this conversation to the public. Wendy was a friend in the minds of many through radio,television and internet. Though that “friendship” is arguably imaginary, the care for her is very real. This issue of conservatorships and appointed guardians made familiar to many of us through Brittany Spears, is still a scary and weird scenario especially to those that have wealth and maybe lack a presence of good people. Brittany’s situation seemed to be tainted by the times as well as her association with youth I think. It’s easier to accept the parent coming in to continue guardianship/protection (and we know the reality with this) of their (adult) child. Wendy’s situation is somewhat abrupt and complicated with show ending, divorce, scandal, addiction and Covid/quarantine. This is a collection of subjects we all need to consider personally and in the lives of loved ones.

At first I thought the docuseries was exploitative. And clearly, there were people taking advantage of Wendy ('nuff said about her so-called former publicist Shawn). But by the end of the series, I think airing it was a good thing cause it shed a light on how shady guardianship can be. And I also thank Melissa Rivers for keeping the conversation about Wendy going now that the series is done. Cause I know a lot of people (like me) wanna know that Wendy's doing better.

This was an excellent interview . I was thinking the group behind this documentary were going to be slime-bags exploiting Wendy for money . After seeing them and hearing them I have a whole different opinion now . I was very impressed with them and appreciated their humanity and sensitivity about Wendy and her situation . They have put everything into context and I understand the whole story better now . I think her son has been unfairly portrayed as this kid who stole from his mother . I think whatever he did was approved by his mother . I am happy they did the documentary so that light can be brought to the guardianship situation . I think in the end it will benefit Wendy . This guardian and the whole way this guardianship came to be needs to be investigated . Something isn’t right with it . Great job Melissa and thank you again for putting this all out there.

Someone saw an opportunity to swoop in and be a guardian and did just that. Not only is it normal in Wendy Williams circles to spend that kind of money on their son’s birthday or allow them to order shaver from Uber eats … HE WAS IN COLLEGE. He was a student and probably wasn’t cooking in his dorm room and his mother is proud and that’s all she has after her divorce (outside of her beautiful family) this was very normal. Now in terms of her having any additive in issues and still processing her divorce that’s absolutely a separate issue and her son being taken care of by his mom with her money is not unusual. We have seen this with so many millionaires over time with their offspring! What in the world?! Sounds like a hater. Didn’t see her son as a human and entitled to “her money” but they saw themselves entitled to her money. How does that happen? Where do they do that at?!

It's a bit odd to hear production who put out a statement recently that had they known she was diagnosed with dementia they would have put the camera's down, then to listen to producers here talk about how "she loved it" and how they admit it was "up and down", that they questioned her cognition, he Just said he questioned her clarity, yet they felt it necessary to continue filming her when she was Clearly unwell and unaware? They felt it was in good taste to film her while intoxicated, confused and unaware of her surroundings? Production blames management, management blames production, did ANY of them actually really care about Wendy's wellbeing? It's pretty difficult for the public to view this as a documentary when it screams exploitation and to production's best interest NOT Wendy's. Not ONE producer or management team member could deduce that - as this woman says here in this interview - "Wendy was in and out" , therefore she is NOT capable to make her own decisions regarding filming. The Judge, guardian, her yes men/women, production, management... I don't see where Wendy's wellbeing was at the forefront of this filming decision. It took an actual diagnosis to put the camera's down, that's a Legal Decision, Not a personal wellbeing decision about Wendy. I still want to see evidence of the Doctor that diagnosed her. Who's Doctor is this? Did the guardian arrange that? The female producer speaking is defending a guardian who is a fraud. I can't listen to these people. They sat there and did exactly that Melissa... these producers are deferring to management when They are the ones behind the cameras. Not one of them said a damn word! Melissa asked good questions, good for her to bring the guardian up the way she did! Wendy would be SO happy about Melissa's approach here! Good job girl and I miss your mom! My mom too... 14 years ago I lost her, my heart goes out to you and your son. Be well.

This documentary was, as though so heartbreaking, necessary to show what has been going in that we were so unaware of. I feel for her family at the same time so much felt so strange, so confusing about the whole ordeal. I was so annoyed at all the people she is surrounded by, including Will. I don't get any of it. Why court docs are sealed. This is crazy stuff! All that matters is her healthcare and she needs to be with her family. FREE WENDY! The saddest part of it all is that Wendy fell apart due to a trifling man leaving . Tragic for any woman. She was only held together for DECADES due to a man. Ugh. SMH

she knew he was cheating the whole time, he cheated while she was pregnant with their son; he didn't leave, she filed for divorce and said she was planning on doing it their whole relationship..... very toxic relationship by all parties

@SonOfAGun1814 Yes she knew but he held her together by limiting her alcohol. Sad, that without man she couldn't do that on her own. Well honestly she was never not an alcoholic because she still was drinking but functional when he was around. TRAGIC that a woman would let a man do this to her.

Toxic relationship aside, a) Wendy Williams is a long-term addict -- she was an addict before Kelvin came into her life, and b) she suffers from dementia and lymphedema which has no connection to her romantic relationship. Let's not get things twisted.

@flenif2247 this is what happens when you let your personal pain alienate you from friends and make everyone an enemy. Wendy had no one other than her husband in her life. Perhaps she was afraid of losing the only person she has.

Both of my grandmother's suffered from dementia. One of them, alcohol induced FTD. She was an extraordinarily high functioning alcoholic who flew under the radar for decades, even with the doctors! I lost count of the numbers of sprains, breaks + surgeries she had due to being intoxicated + falling during her senior years. I do remember the second to last fall + surgery she had - it was for her knee. The doctors actually decided to do blood work while she was in the ER for this incident - her blood alcohol level was 4 times the legal limit hell + they sent her home with absolutely zero care beyond narcotics. I had to learn how to detox my 90 year old grandmother at home, without pain medicine or alcohol of any kind + if you thought Wendy was hell on Wheels 😂 my grandmother makes her look like a teddy bear in comparison. There's so much shame + secrecy that comes with alcoholism, making it incredibly difficult for the person suffering + their families to get the necessary professional help that both need in order to have the tools to cope + manage this disease. The dementia that comes along with this disease is as unruly, difficult+ dangerous as alcoholism. It takes a toll on the individual + their families + caregivers will never be able to adequately describe. Thank you for shedding more light on the documentary + advocating for Wendy + her family.

I blame the son who was taking out a lot of money from her account. He probably did it because his father talk him into it, to help him financially since he went bankrupt.The guardianship happened right after the son took out big withdrawals from the bank. I hope it this is true, her son lives with this for the rest of his life. Sorry to say this but the apple don't call far from the tree.

Only Wendy can call because she is being treated. These facilities do not allow her to have her cell phone. They're very strict. It's for her own good.

Melissa Wendy’s business manager was named Bernie. I believe it was him who paid for a lawyer to collude with Wells Fargo by using Wendy’s Amex card to pay himself and a lawyer. Bernie and Wells DFargo were working together to get guardianship started.

I always enjoyed Wendy. She wasn’t strong enough to kick her cheating man to the curb. I bet her drinking increased when he left. Women out there, never allow any man to control any part of your life. Control is not love. Once a cheater, always a cheater. Kick them out of your life.

If the camera crew was going to film the next day, and then found out Shawna & Wendy slipped off to LA the previous night, how is it the camera crew THAT FILMED Wendy in LA while driving around, WHY DIDNT THAT CAMERA CREW communicate to camera crew in New York of Wendy’s whereabouts ?????

Her brother and this guy did interviews and they keep saying "You Know" constantly! Someone needs to count how many times they both said it. It can't just be coincidence that both men have the same habit and quote.

Wendy never trusted her brother. He’s a user and grifter like most of the people around her.. he sold stories to the tablet about her. She even talked about it on her show.
