In the men's competition, it's Craig Williams, a credit analyst from Lynn, Massachusetts, vs. John Shumski, a marketing representative from Medford, Massachusetts. In the women's round, it's Frankie Perry, a model from Canoga Park, California, against Brenda Hund, a student from Roswell, Georgia.

Joust: The Gladiator and contender face off for 30 seconds on elevated platforms. They must knock each other off with pugil sticks.
Assault: The contender must attempt to hit a target while a Gladiator shoots at them using a tennis ball cannon.
Powerball: Contenders try to score points by depositing balls into baskets and avoid being tackled by three Gladiators.
Breakthrough & Conquer: The contender must face two Gladiators in this two-part event. First, they need to score a touchdown against the first Gladiator. Then the contender must wrestle the second Gladiator, forcing them to step outside of a ring.
Human Cannonball: Two Gladiators stand on pedestals, and the contenders attempt to swing towards them and knock them off.
The Eliminator: The Eliminator is an obstacle course spanning the arena, the winner of which advances to the next round of the competition.

Welcome to the official channel of American Gladiators, home of patriotic spandex and giant cotton swabs.
Beginning in 1989 for 8 seasons, this competition swept America. Two men and two women compete against each other and a roster of "American Gladiators". Events included, The Assault, Joust, The Wall, Breakthrough and Conquer, Hang Tough, Powerball, and many others, all culminating in the final event, "The Eliminator", a difficult obstacle course race. Every season there is a tournament to determine its "Grand Champion". For two seasons, there was an "International" competition taped in England where the champions from 4-6 countries competed similarly.

@Paul-wu7xd - No, they have *NOT* . They only ever previously uploaded just the first episode of season 1. Absolutely *NO* other episodes from the first season have been uploaded onto this official American Gladiators channel. Only seasons 2-7.

I love the highly experimental nature of the first season. You have the legendary Joe Theismann as an early announcer, and Mike Adamle actually demonstrating how the events worked. Larry Thompson was a great referee but I always loved the executioner style ref of the first season.

For me this was American Gladiators at it's best, WCW-style wrestling personalities, awkward contestant spots ("a hockey enthusiast") and the ref dressed as an executioner. Wish it would have stayed this way, later it was much more influenced by football, but for me it started out PEAK!

So it seems like we’re going back to the beginning, and possibly showing all of the missing episodes, including any Special Celebrity, Sports, or Military Episodes along the way. We as fans at least deserve that much, to have the Full Series shown in its Entirety.

This early half-season may be rough but you have to admit, this style of Assault is way more interesting than when they used basic platforms for all the stages.

Sunny was so beautiful 😍❤ It's a shame her AG career got cut short because for whatever reason some "genius" decided to elevate the Conquer ring by about a couple feet. Sunny fell off the ring when a contender successfully pushed her off, which injured her leg and that was it for her on the show. 😢

@@jorgeandrew Dude, none of the gladiators did very well in this version. They were still ironing out the kinks here. I think she would've fared a lot better had she stuck around after the mid-season revamp.

@@SRC267 Probably season 2. My personal favorite is 4 but aesthetically the show didn't change too much after season 2 aside from rotating out a few events and most of the gladiators.

This was before (better) safety gear and updated rules were applied to Contenders and Gladiators to reduce chances of injuries. 35:10 My favorite scene with a screaming swing.

Yeah, even both of the documentaries didn't spell out what they were AT ALL. Heck, I know someone who literally writes books about the history of game shows, and he doesn't know either. It's one of the few gaps in his knowledge that's failed to get filled for a book or one of his TV commentaries.

@@BradleyBoy I highly doubt it. How would they have been able to do that event in such a low ceiling studio? Plus, why would it be considered a "new" game in season 3 that even Zap alluded in the premiere that she had yet to try?

@@SapinskiMath Well it did involve the contenders on bungee cords trying to score so it's at least a similar idea. But it's possible the gladiators had little to no involvement in it or had a different role than swinging on bungees themselves trying to block the contender.

As someone who grew up on the UK version of the show, this feels really weird. Our version was filmed in one of the biggest arenas in the UK, had a huge crowd, used loads of pyro and effects, there was music all over it... this feels so small and cheap in comparison. Did the US version get bigger in later seasons or was it always like this? The Eliminator set looks like it's made of plywood and they've cheaply repurposed Powerball bins as obstacles! The Eliminator was better here generally; it was much more elaborate and set over multiple levels. It also went off with a staggered start, the contender in the lead getting to go first, so whoever crossed the line first was just the winner, you didn't need to work out aggregates like this one. Plus the scoring system was different so you didn't end up with ridiculous, impossible deficiences like 31 seconds to overcome.

All the later seasons of the American one is uploaded on this channel, they did adopt more to the UK style especially from Season 5, though the eliminator was always a bit different to ours. The cheap experimental look lasted half a season, second half of S1 looked much better but still small.

I barely remember this show at all, I was maybe a few months old when the show started, but I don't remember it being anywhere near this bad either. Probably just the earlier events or format that really didn't age well.
