You said it. RDJ is a move to drown out the noise from Majors supporters. If it were a lesser-known actor replacing him, they knew everyone would just want Majors. RDJ is the only one they have who can fill the talent gap and get people to "forget" JM, though it won't work for many. Plus nostalgia is all Marvel can sell anymore.

How does Reed Richards ethnicity/race play into his character? I’m not saying it can’t, obviously characters like Thor and BP and their stories are tied directly to their race/ethnicity and all that. How does that apply to Reed though?
