Thanks so much for making these videos showing mistakes, failures, and the like. Makes us all feel better when we know great growers can still struggle!! I am in the process of making a rescue section/ ugly plant/bug infested/diseased section. Just had a huge rust fungus outbreak, just about all my plants were affected, and i have to quarantine the ones still infected...ugh, didn't have to do this with spidermites or for any other reason but it would be a good thing to quarantine the new plants so my entire collection doesnt get damaged, its for the best but so much work!! Putting mine in a walk in closet attached to the grow room....I lost so many plants! 😢 what they say is true, quarantine the new plants so this doesn't happen to you!
Awwww Hoyas are fun!! I know they're not everyone's favourite, but once you get one to bloom, they become addictive. That Hoya carnosa would thrive in your greenhouse during summer! Great video as always Jan, thanks for posting this type of stuff to keep expectations realistic for everyone watching!
I have 11 different Alocasia and they’re all thriving, pushing out new leaves before the last new leaf hardens off. I’ve considered pon, but not sure I want to because of the expense, however, I am keeping it in the back of my mind. They’re all in soil in self watering containers and the growth is amazing! I made my own self-watering pots for the babies, just a 3” square nursery pot that fits inside a coffee mug but not all the way to the bottom and placed a micro-fiber strip for wicking. Works wonderful. When the wick is nearly dry, I give it water. I’ve made several different size self-watering pots using ‘canisters’ and ‘utensil caddies’ ~ I find these work well because they’re deeper than the nursery pots. In America, we have Dollar General (discount store) and I’ve purchased these items for $5 - $8, and they’re ceramic, not plastic. I have a couple of moss poles in in ‘utensil caddies’ and they’re very supportive for the pot/pole.
Omg same! There’s something very special about being able to help a plant that’s going down hill. I literally had an Alocasia Frydek variegated seedling that had 5 beautiful leaves but I did something wrong when it first arrived and it lost everything! Leaves and roots 😢 I was gutted but I didn’t give up. 6 -8 weeks later it has regrown its first leaf and blessed me with a beautiful half moon. It gives me a sense of joy and satisfaction knowing I was able to help it through its toughest times. Granted it’s totally my fault for almost killing it in the first place 🤪
I definitely second the semi Hydro advice for Alocasia . I know I am in the US and conditions might be different, but my alocasias are so easy to care for in pon.
I'm still trying ro grow them in aroid mix cause it is cheaper for me in the long run. But I gotta admit that Pon and Semihydro makes it nearly too easy 😂 (Kinda takes the excitement out for me 😅)
I am really becoming a big fan of Bradley! He does all of the adorable moves and how he responds to your voice when you talk to him. I am sure he understands what a camera does On top of everything he is quite a good looking chap. Okay, back to plant comments; I will look forward to these plants graduating back to "General Population ".
Oh my god, I hope you gave some scratches and play time to Brad some time during this shooting because my cat-loving hands started itching from the way he was asking for it @4:05 😍 all my mind was thinking was "PLEASE pet the cat!!!"
Seeing you holding on to the railing like that amazed me. Looks like your yoga paid out. Btw, this video gives me hope in recovering my clarinervium and gloriosum white veins. Wish me luck. P/S Bradley stole the show with that tummy rub 😊
I have that exact same Hoya and it looks like that since 2020 until this summer I put it outside and we had so much rain and then lots of really hot weather and it started sprouting all kinds of vines with pink and white leaves and a very striking pink too! It just finally came to life! And it’s still in the same little nursery pot but it’s happy so I’m not changing anything! In a few months, it will have to come indoors for the winter and I hope it remains happy.
This video was kinda refreshing as do struggle at times with my plants. My full set of plants is in the rescue section at the moment. Looking forward for summer to come around and fix things
I also have an area in my home where I put my "Time Out" plants is what I call it lol I use the space for plants that need a time out but also as a quarantine zone as well. Loved this video!
Brad in the background being the star of the show again xD That Dioscorea is so beautiful with it's multiple colors and white stripes! well not right now but I can't wait to see it in it's full glory in a few months!
Another great video. Have you ever thought about planting the hoya at the base of one of your aroids? It should do well in that mix and would fill around the base of a plant. The type that you have is probably pretty cold hardy so could be in the green house of outside plant. Just a thought. Brad is adorable!
Jan, at least you get rid of plants after they’re half-alive! I dump plants whenever I feel like it; I find that many ppl in the plant community frown on that. I also hate bugs & “beneficial bugs” are no exception; all bugs are beneficial to nature, but I don’t want any of them in my house. Thanks for sharing Jan!
Yeah there seems to be this expectation that you HAVE TO propagate every node and try until it's absolutely too late ... I often just 'give up' as well :P
Hello from Brazil, about the m. adansoni var., if you have a little patience and keep the pot slightly tilted, you can release shoots on the side without var., the plants tend to release shoots upwards, if you want to try a more var. leaf try to do some juggling and leave the white part of the stem upwards or vice versa, it also works, I do this trick with my spp. var.
I have a couple of plants with pest problems. I’ve treated them and put them outside in a shady spot to rehab, hoping some natural predators take of the pests 🤷♀️😀🇨🇦
How often do they get released from rehab back into the display area? Does it ever happen? You really in my mind have the best plant content. Keep it coming!
I had a section like this for my struggling plants, but it just turned into an Anthurium graveyard. Just last week, I threw them all away, and it's such a weight off my shoulders not having to look at them anymore.
Alocasia love love love pon/perlight mix My problem is they grow too much, too fast and produce TOO Many corms. I’m one of those people who cannot not grow something. I can’t throw them away and I’ve pushed as many plants as I could to family and friends lol
I am the same with plants, some I baby and some either live or die with the care they get. Generally, I don't bother with rescue anymore, if it starts going downhill it goes in the trash and I either replace it or, more likely, buy something new to fill that spot. I am only putting in the effort to rescue something if it was very expensive and/or difficult to replace.
I have exactly the opposite. Plenty of ugly on the struggle bus, and a handful of presentable. 25 mph gust snapped my verrocosum that was just reviving to beautiful. 😢😢😢
Haha, I don't have the space for such a large 'ugly plant' section. I have a little space behind my TV. At the moment there are 2 dormant Alociasia Amazonica's there and 2 stalk begonia's with NO leaves at all. Fingers crossed! 🤞
It reassures me to see that you also have ugly plants (and cotner with rubbish 😂)! Thanks for showing us! I can tell you: do not go on holiday leave! I normally manage to have a lot of big plants with perfect leaves, but if somebody else does the watering....I know, it frightens my friends when I ask to do the watering. Most of the plants (on poles) are connected to a watering system, so the just have to plug in a plug for 10min and the excess water will drain automatically. Nevertheless, underwatering followed by overwatering and failure in recognizing pest led to complete loss of my big verrucosum last year and 7 more plants (also rare ones) this year - and I guess some more will follow. Unfortunately, I do not have a space to put ugly plants in. How do you manage watering during your holidays?
@@sydneyplantguy I guess a very well experienced plant addicted one 😉 Having plants and growing plants is different in my experience. I just have friends having plants 🤣
Relatable indeed! Looks very familiar 😂 Love the way Brad knows when you're talking to him and he should answer. 😺 I have a few that I want to chop between nodes to thicken up. Been waiting for Spring, but looks like it's okay to do it now, yes?
I have a grow tent in my basement. I put propagations and rehabs in there. I have some alocasia in there now rehabbing from a failed attempt and changing them over to lecca. 😢
Hello I usually don’t say anything about videos? I just really like to watch them. Just wanted to know if your little storage room has any mirrors maximize the light coming from the skylight.
Tbh I hardly hospitalise plants anymore because it has never been successful for me & all I do is prolong the agony of an eventual death 🥲🥲😂😂 Thanks for sharing, I appreciate you keeping it real 👍👍
27:03 that is what I say. But I do everything...they grow and get pests and I get mad. It is too much sometimes and can take toll on you. There is too many beautiful plants in the world, we can't keep them all. I suggest you keep coffee plant. Doesn't need too much like and likes moisture.
Hello Sydney pant guy your video have been very inspiring. Just wondering do you have any tips on how to keep my cat from eating my peace lily's leves 😢
Hello, I love your videos. and I am also passionate about plants, your plants are all beautiful, do you do preventive treatments against parasites? I currently have an invasion of thrips that I am having trouble getting rid of, I have already lost several plants.. can you help me please? I live in Switzerland, Sincerely,
Have you ever tried HB-101? I have been doing some research on it and am thinking about implementing it to my routine but I have not seen many content creators talking about it.
I used it very early on in my plant journey but eventually just stopped using it as I had great success without it as well. Wasn’t worth the price for me personally
How come when I prop cuttings in water they rot? I change the water and don’t mix and match plants - you seem to haphazardly just toss stuff in water and leave it alone and they grow amazingly in the root dept - wtf am I doing wrong? Seems simple enough
You make me laugh 😂too ugly to be on display 😂😂I am the same my prayer plants are not my favourites so there in the bathroom an porch we’re I don’t have to look at them . I thought they wouldn’t make it in them rooms but there both thriving 😂😂😂
I feel the same way, it’s understandable. Quality more than quantity. I Downsized to 30 plants to make my hobby enjoyable not a chore. Either the plant want to grow or not. I do have patience with Philodendron Serpen. requires a little more care but to stressful. Good thing it’s pretty. I’m June in my Junegle 🪴 Virginia 🪴
