Many things come to mind when thinking about New York City, but how the city deals with its garbage is usually not one of them. New Yorkers produce over 14 million tons of trash each year - and a combination of city agencies and private companies work daily to haul away what New Yorkers don't want.
Join Cheddar & CuriosityStream as we explore the unique histories and modern challenges, defining the future of each of New York City's one-of-a-kind infrastructure systems, in NYC Revealed.

75% goes to landfill, sanitation workers have to collect bags by hand; is NYC stuck in the 80s? Meanwhile, just 1% goes to landfill in Amsterdam, and garbage is collected through sensor-based, underground containers.

Seems like a pretty crappy system. Good garbage trucks, like the ones they use in most of Europe, don't vomit garbage juice on the street. Landfills are banned in most of Europe too, and in many cities all the heat from the incinerated waste is sent directly to homes/businesses for heating.

@Ass_of_Amalek
@Ass_of_Amalek 2 года назад
"landfills are banned in europe" is 100% a false statement. europe isn't one country, and I haven't heard of any european country not using landfills anymore. we just make a little bit more of an effort than america to separate trash to recycle more of it, and we probably burn a larger percentage of the stuff we don't recycle or export, instead of putting it in landfills. but landfills absolutely still are used as the last resort for the significant percentage of trash that doesn't get separated for some kind of use. some european countries are also pretty good at separating compostable waste to make soil from it (which I think is normally not allowed to be used in commercial agriculture though due to potential toxic contamination). here in germany, the consumers throw away trash in several separate categories: clear glass, colored glass, various glass and plastic bottles that are worth 7-25€cent to return (some are recycled as well-separated material, some are refilled several times), plastic and metall packaging for recycling/burning, cardboard and paper for recycling, compostables, and a catch-all general waste category that's too mixed to be conveniently recycled in one of the other ways. if you have anything particularly toxic, you're supposed to turn it in to the dump separately (batteries and electronics also have their own waste streams), and if you've got big stuff like furniture, you can book a collection in front of your home in advance, which is free once a year.

I worked at Fresh Kills :andfill for 28 years. The garbage that is buried is under one hundred plus feet of dirt. The capped with a non permeable membrane, several feet of sand, then another semi permeable membrane, then several feet of topsoil. There are pipes (with hole in them) that run throughout the garbage in layers, and a gas plant on the premises that separats out the lechate (garbage water) and recycles the collected gas back into municipal gas system. There is also a huge deep undergrond "slurry wall" surroundimg the perimeter of the landfill. That totally contains any and all garbage from leaking out. The garbage will decompose safely. All while providing gas for the community, and a Park on top.

@@henryjohnson-ville3834 that's correct. And even in countries with the bins like Australia there are still problems. I'm in inner suburban Brisbane, at a block of ten apartments. Sometimes the bins are all out on the footpath, on the kerb, and in the morning some idiot(s) has parked his car (s )in front of sone of the bins. This is despite all the apartments and houses around here having their own garages and parking areas. Usually it's not someone living here. The garbage man gets angry because he has to get out and move the bins in front of the driveway to empty them. Its does not happen all the time, but I 've seen it happen quite a few times. Sometimes a bin or two is just left and not emptied for two weeks and it stinks and flies come, terrible in summer here. I m usually at home till 10 am, so if I hear the truck coming I 'll go down and move the bins if a car ( or cars ) are blocking access and the drivers are grateful for that. How frustrating that so many states don’t have redemption value systems in place for aluminum cans. That is, in a handful of states, including California, when you buy a six pack of soda you pay an extra nickel per can. Then at the end of the can’s life it can be collected and redeemed. And thus recycled
@bjvu9460

yeah, that extra nickel is going to make people recycle. the trash is a product from earth and will be heading back to earth
@amigajoe

@@bjvu9460 That extra nickel DOUBLES the value of their effort. You must not live in a big city where there are lots of low-income people, and thus you don’t see the effort that many people go to Already, at 5 cents.

We have this locally and it might help with tin cans, but does nothing for the waste problem and if anything only increases the crack addict population. For as long as I have lived there are bums in every city collecting cans, putting like 10 bags of recycling cans on a cart and wheeling it everywhere they go. When you go to a bottle depot there's always crackheads lurking around or 5 of them taking up spots all inside. Some people who do it are actually real people who may have disabilities or whatnot. However most of it just supports drug addiction which isn't very helpful at all to society. Paying people a penny for recycling is a dumb waste of time. You are either poor and now you focus recycling your cans before plastic or your rich and you don't give a shit about the extra money at all. Instead we should just be forcing companies to be at the forefront of recyclable materials. It should be pepsi figuring out how to best dispose of their product not the general population. While as individuals we do have some responsibility to maintain out planet. There's only so much that can be done when everything is made of different materials and is disposed the same. Every chip bag, wrapper, straw and every other piece of consumerable plastic should be the exact same material. It all should be recyclable.

@twinmama42
@twinmama42 2 года назад
@@christophers.4007 That's not proper recycling. Proper recycling means separate bins for organic, paper, plastics (and combined), glass, metal, normal waste. Paper waste can be sold for a profit, same with glass, organic waste becomes compost and natural gas (which is used to run the facility or can be sold), plastics and combined stuff (e.g. plastic-coated cardboard) is used for fabrics (fleece) metals are molten and reused. The rest has to be deposited in a landfill or burnt (heating complete cities in winter-time and generating electric power in summer).

I dunno why you would protest incinerators. If you don't like them, don't move close to one? And no, it isn't simply a poor people's problem. People on the Upper East Side got a long existing marine transfer station closed because they bought an apartment next to it. This is now costing the taxpayers additional millions a year to truck it off of Manhattan island instead of offloading the trucks to barges. They called it a 'garbage dump', but nothing was actually stored there, hence the 'marine transfer station' moniker. Of course, nobody wants to live next to any type of garbage, however that does not change the needs of the city's infrastructure.
@derorje2035
@derorje2035 2 года назад
well, Waste incineration plants significantly reduce the land value around them, even if they filter the exhaust gases properly. This means that the people who lived there before and want to leave will get less money for their house when they move away. Even for tenants it is difficult, because they may only be able to pay their rent there because they do not have enough money.
