Thing is, unlike any of these games it's actually creative. And loud and obnoxious enough to not be boring. I could have seen them localizing that and making it one of those Chuck E. Cheese tickets for prizes type games.

To be fair, with the available resolution on the NES, at that minuscule scale, it is a marvel of art direction that any distinguishing features on a character are visible AT ALL. That’s actually fucking impressive, especially for a team of 3.

Fun story: The last time I had a go at a Where's Wally book was just before I went for an operation as a kid. The doctors gave me a Where's Wally book to take my mind of them injecting me with anaesthetic.

I always assumed he was French. He was a mime stereotype that was often shown with a baguette, and his name was similar to Walter if pronounced in a bad French accent. I am American.

In Australia, It was Wally, with Waldo also featuring in the books as "villain" and featured yellow/black strips. see "Where's Wally in Hollywood" book.

I'm a United Statesian and the only thing that really comes to mind about the name "Waldo" aside from Where's Waldo is Ralph Waldo Emerson. And that really tall dude in "Ripley's believe it or not", I think his name was Waldo.

In the Swedish translation his name was apparently Waldo, Hugo and Valle. Can't remember "reading" them as a kid in the 80's though.

The harder difficulties probably only did horizontal scrolling because the NES technically could only do horizontal or vertical scrolling not both. In order to do both you needed some technical trickery that tended to junk from the right side on the left side of the screen like in Super Mario Bros. 3

As an American they only other Waldo I've ever heard of is the name of the nerdy kid in the Van Halen "Hot For Teacher" video, which I believe came out first. The publishers probably thought Wally looked like a grown up version of the kid from the popular MTV video and figured it worked. After what happened to Waldo in that music video he probably wanted to hide, even surrounded by tons of people.

I think it's to make up for the fact Cluedo is just Clue in the USA. The missing "do" replaced the end of Wally's name.

Another thing that is really frustrating about this is that Wally/Waldo can be in totally different colours, which makes him a lot harder to find, especially on Hard, where the cursor is also smaller than in the other two difficulty settings (as if the game wasn’t frustrating enough).

As an aside, a 'Waldo machine' (a phrase coined by kinky fascist hippy Robert A Heinlein) is a remote controlled 'hand' or similar means of manipulating something from a distance. Arguably, then, all keyboards, joysticks, Nintendo Wii/Joycon weirdness and game pads are also Waldo machines.

And as far as I know no american has ever used the name waldo as an insult except referring to someone being hard to find. I was fascinated by your British version.

It's interesting to see all the different names Wally has in different countries, such as Ubaldo, Wahle and Vili. I think I had only one actual Wally book but several similar ones that worked along those lines.

We all know the bugger off tent isn't true, because it would instantly be taken over by Flapps. My preferred not-waldo is the I Spy books by Scholastic. They're photography of miniature sets instead of illustration, and they give several things to find for each picture.

US American from Oregon (ohr-eh-guhn). We never called people "Waldo" as an insult. However, you never met anyone named Waldo, either. It's the kind of name that, if someone introduced themself as, you'd just be polite and shake their hand, like it's no big deal. However, if your friends introduced you to their newborn son, Waldo, you'd be giving them the look that says, "Did you really? Please tell me you're joking." If they weren't joking, you might reconsider your friendship with them. That's just not a name someone gives their kid expecting them to grow up being respected by their peers.

I remember Where's Wally from the '80s. I believe it was 1987 it originally came out. There was also Where's Wally TV series by DIC which, despite coming out in 1991, had a very '80s sounding and pretty cool theme tune. 😊

I think it might just be that Walter is quite a common name in the US, so there are a lot of Wallys. I have worked with a Wally, and have a customer called Wally. Both of them are in their early 30s. I have never heard the name Waldo outside of the Where's Waldo books. I have never met anyone in the UK called Walter, in fact the only reason I was aware the name existed when I was younger was because of Walter the Softy in the Beano.
