Terry Pratchett's Discworld is a massive collection with just over FORTY books in it. That is daunting to think about, and the collection is daunting if you've never read a single book. Well, if you've never read a single Discworld book; I guess it's extra daunting if you've never read ANY book...
In this video, I'll be giving some tips on where to start with Discworld! There are tons of different starting points for this massive collection, and you don't have to just pick up the first one and dive into that (in fact, I personally recommend against starting with the first novel).

This was originally going to be my Wrath review, but that entire video wound up being totally out of focus, so I'm refilming it and putting this one a little earlier, instead! John Gwynne's Wrath will be reviewed some time next week!

I’d been wanting to start discworld for awhile. I started with color of magic and about 30 pages in I dropped it knowing that there were 40 something books and there had to be better. Then i picked up small gods and I’m probably gonna finish it today. 10 pages in I was already hooked. This book definitely sold me on discworld and the potential of these books. People tell me it’s not as funny as the others but I found this book hilarious. Making god an angry turtle was a great idea. Shit is hilarious. And on the serious note the observations are pretty great. they’re always done with a joke, a usually a good one too. Book is fantastic. Probably gonna read Mort next.

That's awesome! Small Gods is an awesome one, and I view it as among the best standalone suggestions. Glad you've really loved it and hope that you enjoy your time with Mort!

If you want something more grounded, and like focusing on Ankh Morpork specifically, the city watch series is a great place to start.

Wee free men audiobook is how I started. It is good. Lords and ladies to follow then back to the hat.

I read then in order of publication because, well, I had to. They were coming out two a year at the time. My mother borrowed them from about Interesting times onward and I was envious she was getting to read them all one after the other with no waiting.

That's awesome! Do you mean you started as early as Colour of Magic's release? That must have been a really cool experience to follow along with the series for a long time. I joined the party pretty late, myself; when I first started my Discworld journey, A Hat Full of Sky had just been released. I definitely read the series completely out of order the first time around.

I also read them all as they came out. I even started before the Discworld with the dark side of the Sun and strata. No not his original novel the carpet people I only read that when it was reprinted. I remember when the last of the 2001 novels 3001, I think it was came out which had one of the Astronauts who were injected from the spacecraft in 2001 found and revived thinking oh my God, what a pile of Discworld books he would have to read.

Small point, Hogfather is in the Gods Trilogy omnibus book, I understand why people think it is a death book but it is a god's book.... I have all 4 of the omnibus books

Oh interesting! I think it came with my Death Collection from the Collector's Library, but I'll have to double check--could definitely be wrong there; it's certainly tough to categorize, but I think it fits in with the gods collection too!

I started at the beginning, I am just about at the end of small gods. I absolutely love them all and for me so far I think I liked pyramids the most, but its a hard choice.

So glad that you're enjoying your read through! I am really excited to reread Pyramids and Small Gods both--I don't think I really appreciated them last time I read them, and I've had many folks tell me they're a favorite, so I'm looking forward to seeing what I think on this reread. Cheers!

I was gifted with Mort first then The colour of magic. If I had to pick. Maybe start with Equal Rites then Guards! Guards! But Death is a great Center piece.

Death is my favorite! I just reread Mort as part of my read along and loved it way more than I think I did in my previous reads. I still suggest Guards! Guards! as a starting point, but I'm reading through Pyramids now and may change to that.

Have been a fan of the Disc world for a while and I am now used to getting strange looks as I giggle crazily to myself on public transport and on aircraft.

I feel you there! I've had fits of laughter at times, especially with the absurd things he tends to put in the footnotes. I'm looking forward to getting more strange looks during my reread later this year!

No love for the witches? (Besides Tiffany) I was all in with DEATH, the wizards & the watch when I was younger, but after multiple reads and decades the witches sub series is every bit as strong as the watch... If not more so... Equal rites and Mort are when the cement set and were solid foundations for the rest.. I'm with you on small gods, it's a favourite of mine too.. Cheers

Good points! It has been a while since I read the Witches books, but I'm curious about how my thoughts on starting points will change during my reread of Discworld. I'm sure my favorites and recommendations will definitely shift now that I'm older! I'm not far off from getting to Equal Rites in the read-along. :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Love Prachett and Diskworld. I've read some but mostly like them on audio ( great readers). I started Small Gods and just did not care for it. The Watch books and anything with Cohan are best.

Interesting! Can I ask what didn't appeal to you about Small Gods? I am also enjoying the audiobooks for the first time and am surprised by how great they can be! They aren't all terrific, but many of them are!

Good point! I don't think there are any that I dislike, or that I think are bad books perse. At most, there are just books I'd rank higher than others. I'm planning a reread of the series soon; it'll be interesting to reflect on Colour of Magic and other early books as I read everything back-to-back!

there are no terrible parts . BUT he really gets in his stride with like mort, and gets even better later on after like book 20 in the series. So in a way you kinda should start there so you are not getting spoiled too early

@@Romenamath Oh one more thing I completely forgot to mention : as great as the audio books are, you are gonna miss a lot of great jokes that way. Terry loves to play with language in weird ways, and you miss a lot of that if you do not see the actual words in front of you. Like take the word her uses for the nac mac feegle ( first coming up in wee free men and the reason i call myself daft wulli) "pictsies", that is a great joke and a nice refrence to the picts (they lived in scotland during roman times) , but if you just listen to it you most likely think he just said pixies, if you really pay attention you find the pronounciation weird but there is no way you get this from listening to it. And there is many more great examples. He was a master wordsmith, in the truest sense of the word.
