I’ve grown up knowing that my whole life. Knowing that the cellar door needs never be touched. I can hear them down there, howling and growling. I can smell them too, the smell of their coats, pungent and animal-like. I have never seen them. Only mother and father are allowed down there, while my sister and I watch from above, wide eyed, out hair matted, our nails jagged.
