We drank from Lac La Ronge Lake until 25 years ago. The water was prestine and the Moose were many. That has all changed, clear cutting, pollution, poverty. We must take care of our own people’s first. Thanks for this great little film.

You are wrong in your explanation of the problem. It isn’t simply “the rich”. Saying the rich are the problem is a cop out attempt at explaining the problem. We know that there are plenty of dirt poor people who are horrible people who do not respect other cultures and ways of life. And we know there are rich people who do spend their money to help all sorts of causes that either help the poor or protect the environment.
So true. I have seen it with my own eyes. A woman I knew was greedy and stole as much money from the poor as she could. Her death was very chaotic. I don't think she is at peace. After she died, in a dream I heard her pleading for water! I tried to tell her to get her life right for years as she got older, but she was just greedy. So many suffered because she would not give the grants and donations to programs for the poor. She put the money in her own accounts.

I have so much respect and admiration for the first people. Your people have put up a big enough fight, you dont need to be split about a Dam that will do you no good, Dam water lays still and if polluted will be extremely difficult to clear. Thank you for the great comment. Many native customs can be kept and maintained especially the love of nature. That should never conflict with Christianity, especially Catholicism. But the Puritans and those like them are very different. They repaid native hospitality by murdering the natives. At least the French considered the natives to be human and intermarried with natives which differed from the Protestant English.
Although there are some differences in the details, I wish the Sioux Nation would take the USA monies growing interest in the bank that has been paid to them for the Black Hills! The tribal model is of small bands of people who are blood relation, living in a co-operative manner, because they need to in order to survive. We should not however look at these times through rose colored glasses. Before the coming of the white man there was still war between the tribes. What the coming of the Europeans did was to upset the order of things, they introduced the guns nd the horse and many new diseases. They displaced the indigenous peoples and upset the balance of power by arming their native allies. A chain reaction was set off, whereby tribes were displaced, which in turn put pressure on others. The many tribes that existed then are long gone. The best we have now are many amalgamations of different groups. The history is there if you care to read it. It makes for un-comfortbale reading if you are white, and so it should. The greatest tragedy ( for me) is that the same attitudes towards tribal peoples continues to this day, witness the wars over routing of pipe lines and mineral "rights". The white man learns nothing.

This shows a romantic and simplistic history that never was. The Cree were a warrior, nomadic, hunter gatherer society. What is left out is the brutality of territorial struggles among the aboriginal peoples. In the 20th Century they are describing a sedentary reservation life using the tools of the Europeans to live a "traditional" life. Though some elements of the old ways were maintained, their old way of life was almost completely transformed. As times and environment change you must adapt or migrate. Migration is not an option for people who remain confined to a reservation. Leaving the reservation or adapting to change is the only choice. Development has destroyed traditional ways for millions upon millions of people Europeans and aboriginals alike. The Cree are not unique in their plight. As times change, people must change. Returning to hunter gathering is not an option. The Cree have a privileged status, granted rights that other Canadians do not have. They have resources. They should make a choice and live with it. Like it or not, they are also a part of modern society.
