Looking to enhance your coin collection? Join Rod Gillis, Education Director at the American Numismatic Association, as he shares expert insights on where to buy coins. In this comprehensive video, Rod delves into the diverse options available to collectors, offering valuable guidance on acquiring coins that align with your collecting goals.
Rod begins by discussing the primary avenue for purchasing coins: brick-and-mortar dealers. These local shops provide a personalized experience and often have ANA affiliation, ensuring adherence to a strict code of ethics. By frequenting reputable dealerships, collectors can build relationships and benefit from expert advice tailored to their collecting habits.
For those seeking a wider selection, coin shows present an exciting opportunity to explore diverse offerings from dealers worldwide. The ANA's World's Fair of Money and National Money Show are prime examples, featuring expansive bourse floors teeming with numismatic treasures. Additionally, smaller local coin shows offer unique finds and a chance to connect with fellow collectors in your community.
Another avenue for acquiring coins is through local coin clubs, where members often buy, sell, and trade coins among themselves. Attending club meetings provides access to a network of collectors with shared interests, offering opportunities to acquire coveted pieces for your collection.
In today's digital age, online purchases have become increasingly popular. However, Rod stresses the importance of caution when buying coins online, as photographs can sometimes conceal imperfections. He advises collectors to examine coins closely before making a purchase and recommends utilizing resources like the ANA's dealer directories to find reputable online sellers.
Trade newspapers and magazines catering to numismatics are another valuable resource for locating reputable dealers and discovering new coins for your collection. By starting with modest purchases and assessing dealer grading standards, collectors can establish trust and confidence in their chosen sellers.
Rod concludes by cautioning against purchasing coins from television channels, where altered or colorized coins are sometimes marketed to unsuspecting buyers. Serious collectors and dealers generally avoid such coins, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and originality in numismatic acquisitions.
Whether you're a seasoned collector or new to the hobby, this video offers essential guidance to help you navigate the coin-buying landscape with confidence. With Rod Gillis's expert advice, you can make informed decisions and acquire coins that enhance your collection's value and appeal. Don't miss out on this opportunity to elevate your numismatic journey-watch now and embark on your next coin-collecting adventure!

This is just superb, I've been looking for "best silver coins to buy for survival" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Wonenry Sonucas Approach - (do a search on google )? It is a good one off product for uncovering a proven trading method to get fast results minus the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my good mate called Gray after many years got excellent results with it.

Another very good video, thank you. QQQ = A quick question if you happen to review this: Mail order companies, (huge companies that typically send your coins in sealed cellophane packs or very attractive and expensive presentation cases) that I am not a fan of so I will not mention by name, were not included in places to buy coins; was there a reason they were not included?

@Kyle Matthes - You are right, But . . . you need to be sure you darn well know what you are doing when buying. I have run into more than one buyer who thought they had purchased some "gem" coins, and later found out they weren't. Cost them a lot more then a few dollars.

My favorite places are flea markets, and shops that have boxes of coins that no one is interested in. So much fun and lots of gems. I also traveled to India several times and found lots of people selling coins on the streets. Plenty of junk and fakes, but also lots of great finds and super cheap.

#1 RED HOT TIP HERE: "Go to a Dealer and start by buying a few coins from them, take home and SEE IF THEIR GRADING IS WHAT YOU BELIEVE THEY ARE; if not, next dealer. Learned that one the hard way 60 years ago.

So much (the majority?) through ebay now. Watch out for switch and bait tactics because it occurs there. Good suggestion to buy modest/small at first and if you like the results, stick with that same person. Example of switch and bait: buy a roll of coins, supposedly OBW (original bank wrap) showing the end coins only--which may look BU--only to find tarnished junk inside.

What about buying coins from the USMint.gov website? Would this be a good place to buy if you can't find a dealer in your area?

It depends on what your looking for. Bullion is generally fine but proof sets of regular coins depreciate very fast.

LOL Why is he saying the most popular is brick and mortar dealers? Those people won't be around for much longer. They're always rude, rip you off, never have what you want, etc. On Ebay you can compare prices, see exactly the coin you want and many of them, etc. The ONLY downside is that you can't see the coin in hand before buying.
