I completely agree. When I bought my double bass I went to LA Bass Works in Los Angeles. When you buy from a professional you know what your buying is what its advertised as and in top shape. I've had friends buy online and it's a roll of the dice.

My first violin I bought from Facebook market place and I knew nothing about what is a good violin then. I didn't even know what was a luthier then. Very soon I went to the local luthier and bought a new one from him.

I Am considering picking up a violin on the side (I mainly play piano). I Did pick up a violin once before at a friend (it was a 3/4 model though) and was able to get a clear sounding note out of it and was even able to play a simple melody without it sounding like a cat being strangled :P What would you say would be a good budget for a first violin to try out if I like playing it etc. (in euro if possible otherwise please let me know what currency you advise in)?
