Where to find Advanced Animation Features in DAZ Studio

In this episode I'll show you where to find the advanced animation features in the regular keyframe timeline in DAZ Studio. These features have been introduced with version 4.12, when the KeyMate and GraphMate plugins were merged into the main app. The layout has changed a bit since then, and both regular keyframes as well as curves for the Dope Sheet view are very difficult to find. Hence this refresher.
For Mark.

TCB - An interpolation type, "TCB" is an acronym for Tension, Continuity, Bias, the three qualities which define the shape of the curve if you plot the value of the interpolated parameter against time. Hello Jay! I´d like to say that I love your channel, which teaches us so much about the harsh 3D rendering world. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I also admire quite much your person, as a role model of a warrior, a survivor, a great teacher. Please, continue unveiling DAZ Studio for us!

16:03 "TCB" is an acronym for Tension, Continuity, Bias, the three qualities which define the shape of the curve if you plot the value of the interpolated parameter against time. Basically, it's a set of parameters that you can adjust so that the animation will speed up or slow down in different ways between two keyframes.

Wow, I've been using Daz for... 5 years? Never knew about the advanced tools for the timeline! People even sell you add-ons in the Daz store to edit key frames, so I thought Daz did not come with this feature by default! (Although, being able to delete, copy or move key frames is more of a basic feature than an advanced feature.)

Thanks for showing me where the Timeline pane is. I couldnt find it. However, when I click on Timeline pane, it does not appear at the bottom of the page like your video, but instead appears on the right and overtakes the content library. How do I place the timeline on the bottom pane but keep the content library? Thanks
@WPguru
@WPguru Год назад
Left-click and drag the timeline tab away from the sidebar, then dock it at the bottom of the screen. I should snap into place. If that doesn't work, head over to Window - Workspace - Select Layout and pick one of the default ones like City Limits Lite. If you want to keep your current layout, save it before you do this, otherwise it'll be nuked.

How can we easily find/change a property on a timeline, it it's not something selectable on viewport, like "mouth open" and hidden properties?
@WPguru
@WPguru Год назад
I don't think there is an easy way. You have to know the property, then drill down on the timeline until you find it, then hunt down the keyframe you want to change.

This is one I forgot how to do. Basically use DAZ Studio to make/produce copies of frames, without any major render time if any. That way you can quickly see how an animation will loop and what adjustments need to be made... You can do this in poser, but I forgot how to do it in Daz Studio? Help please
@WPguru
@WPguru 2 года назад
I don't know what you mean by "make/copy frames" I'm afraid. The quick render process you're referring to is known as an animatic, which is a draft render. You can do this by choosing the viewport render instead of Iray under Render Settings - Engine. Viewport means whatever the viewport is set to (so Filament, Texture Shaded, Wireframe, etc). Hope this helps!

@@WPguru Sorry yes and thank you , the idea is to basically produce frames real quickly as in none productions or rendered frames for an animation. basically just series of auto snips of the set up on the desk top Been getting into animations lately and making my own. Great to find errors before doing the full time consuming render series. I used poser for many years and just started with the poser graph before switching to DAZ.. YES thanks for the info on how to use the graph/keys etc Fantastic. I plan to join your patreon site in the new year , thanks again, and season's greetings.

hello! i like ur videos, would like to ask how to delete the animation keys! can u make a video like holding object in character hands?
@WPguru
@WPguru 3 года назад
To delete keyframes, right-click one and choose "delete". It's not all that obvious to find keyframes in the first place, I'm showing where they are in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fxl6_JeIlvs.html To make a character hold an object in their hands, the easiest thing is to parent it to the hand by dragging it onto the hand in the Scene tab. When the arm/hand moves in the animation, the object will move with it.

Hey Jay I'm good to this point, but, in the graph editor when you use the animations from the Daz store every frame has a key. You can edit them real easy for that reason. The problem is when I make my own animations like you did with this cube, only the frames with keys are editable. Is there any way to bring out the keys Daz creates in the background for interpolation or do I have to continue the tedious task of "ahead one frame create key frame" to have editable keys? Steph from Daz has a tutorial she posted a month or so ago that is great for learning the graph editor but as always only works great if you use Daz bought animations. Very frustrating if there's no way to bring out those other keys that Daz creates between the user created ones.
@WPguru
@WPguru 4 года назад
Those animations sound like they're baked out, and have likely not originated in DAZ Studio (probably baked out from Maya or the likes). As far as I know, there's no native in-app way to bake out interpolated keyframes in DAZ Studio. From aniBlocks you can do it, and the result is just like in your example: every frame has a keyframe. FBX, Collada and MDD can bake out such a sequence from DAZ Studio though, and other apps can import it. You could try that, export as FBX/Collada then import again into DAZ Studio. You may run into issues with smoothing modifiers, which are not honoured during export (leading to clothing poke through). MDD export will work, but I don't know of a way to import an MDD sequence back into DAZ Studio. Hope this helps, let me know what you find out.

Thanks. How I can loop my animation? (like expressions in AE - loopOut("offset"))
@WPguru
@WPguru 3 года назад
You can try turning your animation into an aniblock, those are loopable. With an object that has keyframes selected, on the animate timeline, create a track then right-click and select "create aniblock from Studio Keyframes". You may need the full version of animate for this to work (lite does not support some features): wpguru.tv/animate

@WPguru
@WPguru 3 года назад
Hi Brian, first you need to make the animation longer. The default is 30 frames, which lasts about 1 second. Make it 300 frames and it'll last 10 seconds for example. Now select the second keyframe of your object and slide it further to the right, which will interpolate the action slower. Hope this helps!

I have a problem. I have two cards:1080ti and 1070. But they don't render together when i start final render. Only one works - 1080 ti. But in viewport mode they render together. Maybe you know why?
@WPguru
@WPguru 4 года назад
Make sure they're both selected under Render Settings - Advanced. The log file might be able to give you some hints, under About - Troubleshooting View Log File. The only reason I can think why the 1080Ti is rendering instead of the 1070 is memory: if your scene exceeds what can fit into the 1070's 8GB of memory.
@unfuckkble
@unfuckkble 4 года назад
@@WPguru You were right about the memory difference, I loaded the simplest model and both cards started rendering. Then I loaded my scene and the problem repeated itself - only 1080ti works. Its memory load is more than 9000 megabytes, the second is not more than 3000 and does not work. I deleted almost everything from the scene and they both started working. I have to say that before I had two 1070s with 8 gigabytes both. And they both worked, regardless of the complexity of the scene. Apparently I need to look for another 1080ti for a couple. Anyway - thanks for your help! I wish you 1M subscribers. You are making really useful content!

@@WPguru By the way I have solved this riddle. The answer is simple - subdivision level, I had it set to maximum. More precisely, even render subdivision level. As soon as the level was reduced, everything worked.

Is there a way to use reference footage/video of someone walking in DAZ, so that you can use it for animating? This way you can match the movement or timing. If so, do you have a tutorial on that?
@WPguru
@WPguru 3 года назад
Hi Dan, there is a way to use references images in DAZ Studio. I've explained it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yg3HSucgBAQ.html This will work for still images, but I guess a more convenient way to animate a walk cycle would be to display a video that will move the reference with the timeline slider and display a video instead. I don't think DAZ Studio supports that out of the box, but if you find a way to make it work, please let me know.

daz is such a mess for animation, it's easy when you only have rotation, but when you've animated multiple part of a character and you to move one of those keyframes, you need to move all of them one by one, it's awful
@WPguru
@WPguru 3 года назад
I hear you, it really isn't the best app for doing animations. There is a way to grab multiple keyframes and move them together though: left click and drag a rectangle around them, or CTRL click several so they all highlight, then move the whole bunch. What greatly confused me in the beginning was that what appears to be a keyframe is actually only a marker, so you have to open the object hierarchy on the left to drill deep and find the keyframes - then multi-selection will work. It's so complicated I should really make a video about this 😂

Broken. Basic might as well be non existent as it has zero functions other than being a player. Intermediate is as useless in that doing any edit is impossible owing to the fact that every key, from every node and object is shown on the timeline regardless of what node/object is chosen in scene. To make a bad situation worse you cannot even delete keys in intermediate. Advanced is everything....even if you do not want or use everything. Past timeline example...you have an oops key in an forearm twist, click on forearm, skip to that key and delete. New way.....select forearm, skip to key, open properties, open general transforms, select twist, bend and side to side, delete. So a small repair to an animation went from 3 clicks, to 4 clicks, high lighting 3 keys, sometimes 6 and then clicking delete.... that is not progression. Not to mention the timeline with all the bells and whistles going takes up around half your screen making this program useless on smaller monitors and laptops. If they fixed intermediate to have the same function as it used to have then there would not be an issue but as long as the timeline is going to be a utility knife with so many utilities as to be useless for quick work then the latest Daz is only useful for rendering as all my work is done with a 4.10 portable. I can bust out a 20 second animation in a few hours in 4.10 and in that same period in 4.12 all I get is frustration. So here is my workflow, do all work in 4.10 portable, open up 4.12 public build and use it to render....you can render in beta while running 4.10 portable at the same time....this is the only time a 4.12 version is useful.
