Great advice. very easy to comprehend. Been detecting for a few years now. Was living on a sailboat for 6 past years, just love metal detecting. Was excited when i found a nugget between an oyster bed, and break wall! Spent many days at the beach gathering interesting items. Recently moved back north to help family. Preparing to head out prospecting, traveling the country this summer. Find your videos extremely valuable. Thanks. Enjoy the Excalibur 11 great machine!

Prospecting looks interesting and potentially rewarding. Recently, I earned a pension from work. Now, I have time to explore. For the past couple of months I've been watching videos about gold detector's, and prospecting. By watching your video's, which are very informative, I've learned years of prospecting know-how in a short-period of time. Thanks.

Hi, I just found your videos and they are really informative and well done. I live in Washington State and trying to have a better more precise way of finding gold than just stumbling around creeks that look good but may or may not be anywhere near the gold. I also am trying to do my research while it's still winter and get several good locations for this year when the weather changes. I agree with you that there is a lot more of it (and other precious metals/minerals) out there and more up here in Washington than most people think ( I am in the northeast corner in Stevens County). I really like your approach of covering the bases before you go there and have so far just been researching history of where/what was found in the past and connect the dots that way. I am still weak on a few areas of research that you show though and 1 area is the geologic maps or more specifically the operation of the computer and mapping programs. You have links to the USGS sites and I am having trouble getting the same reports that you use or even good pictures of the geology in our area. It sounds like you covered this more in your Class 1 of the series I can't seem to locate the video? Is it under another name? Other than that I will be out there this spring. I also appreciate your coverage of the methods of doing the actual looking and working of material. I have learned a lot of things I want to try in my prospecting this year. I have a Gold Claimer portable wash plant and I used to use it in Calif. and drag it around to areas where the creeks were dry by June. I have not used it up here and want to do a faster check-out of different areas using the sniping, panning and sluicing check-outs and then hope to find an area where it's rich enough and legal enough to run some yardage. This thing will do (they say) 2 plus yards per hour. So, I'm trying to find out how to do more efficient homework before I go. So thanks again and I hope you also find many more Pounds of Au. thanks, Dale Savage
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 лет назад
Dale: you are right about the 1st class and maps, go here for that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eoIqJo95VtY.html You are very wise to research history - the next class will include that and what to look for in research material. Gold Claimer makes some of the more serious equipment, you could make serious money if you do what you're doing now (research research research and then test to confirm what your research indicates - and only then put in an operation). Very best to you in finding some pounds!

Thank-you Matt for responding. I'll check that site out and I will keep up with your videos and let you know how it goes. Like I said, I came from California, right in the Mother Lode, and never looked enough or knew enough. Now I'm here and I think there is still enough Serious gold here. After I find some of that, I'll go back down there and I know of some Great Spots (hind-end sight)!! Thanks again, Dale Savage

Congratulations on the 15 years Matt. Sure looking forward to many more. Thanks a ton for the video, very informative indeed. Isn't most of the land in the east(I'm in south GA) privately owned, making permission difficult to obtain?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 7 лет назад
Replied last night but I don't see it here so will again: Indeed, most land is privately owned, but we've never been denied permission (so far). A cut will help open a lot of ground and you are bird-dogging spots for them, so they're getting a lot out of it too (more than us in fact). It works both ways. We have also dredged on right of ways (power line, telephone, etc. easements) with no problems. Hope you secure some locations as well - Georgia has great (very pure) gold (and gemstones too).

@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 5 лет назад
You're in luck - the next video in this series is on that area and will be site specific (where the gold line runs, and the proper tools to get it for that site (bar, crack, boulder, whatever). Should be up within a few weeks. The gold from Cow Creek is beautiful, and doesn't have much mercury (leached from natural cinnabar deposits) and in that regard it is "pure" (and is a good nugget producer). In general, most people claimed and worked sites by the roadway - but the best gold deposits (and gold line) are across the creek. Any crack in the gold line of Cow Creek will produce a spectacular find.

Nechy: there isn't one best place - you'll have to start researching the places you want to go - pick the ones where gold is reasonably close, and go from there. How well do metal detectors detect gold fines (say pass 30 mesh). What is the experience with XLF analysers like compared to metal detectors?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 6 лет назад
They really don't detect fines per se, they detect concentrations of fines that appear as solid (and small nuggets in concentrated fines of course add to this). The detectors that detect ground mineralization are really looking for iron as their key, and any lessening of this (let's say you find a line of 80+ (heavy concentration on a White's product - other mfg. will have differing numbers for this) and to either side of that line it immediately drops off - either side could be a streak of fine gold (and what we're looking for in a gravel or sand bar - or in arid country a dry washer setup). Others will have to tell you of the XLF - I have no practical experience with them in the field, relying on data and the methods taught here over electronics - the metal detectors simply pinpoint and confirm what you already know from research, and you can take what is in your head and work anywhere on the globe. Good luck!

I have been watching Cooper's Treasure on Discovery channel. This is a guy named Miklos who was a friend of Gordon Cooper's, the astronaut. The story chronicles Miklos taking up Cooper's treasure hunt based upon pictures Cooper took from his Gemini space capsule. All the treasure is in the oceans. What struck me was that when Miklos and crew jump in the water with their metal detectors they focus their hunt on the potholes and cracks. Sound familiar?

Kevin Hoagland has what appears to be an excellent video on metal detecting. he says that the detector must be in contact with the ground and if you are not wearing out your coil you are missing big gold. What are your thoughts on that, Matt?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 7 лет назад
A good observation - I don't use coil covers or anything that gets between the coil and the ground. Practically all will zap onto big gold, but when we go to the other extreme every mm of closeness helps.
@glendaanderson2388
@glendaanderson2388 7 лет назад
when you say "other extreme" do you mean small gold or deep gold or both?

Small gold - close to the ground (or in contact with it - can't get any closer than that) is critical.

The people that were first on the scene always got the easy gold. In Australia potato sized nuggets sere simply picked up on the surface mid 1800 s ,Wish Icould have seen that.
@Ken_James_SV
@Ken_James_SV 6 лет назад
It wasn't quite that easy, but yes, big nuggets were easy to find here in Australia. Pea to Peanut size were very common and often on the ground or only 1 inch under. Now they are commonly Rice grain size and anywhere from 1 inch to 2 feet down, with the occasional bigger peanut size nuggets, but we also have metal detectors to help find them. The old timers didn't, so there's lots more to find. The large nuggets (potato size and larger) are very rare here. Only a few are found each year. In the state of Western Australia they still find quite a few Sunbakers (nuggets sitting out in the open) about the size of a pea.

Yes correct, and i keep saying the same thing, how good that would have been to see the huge nuggets on top of the surface..or be the first with a detector there ;-). where I am now in Cue at a spot called the Pearling Ground there were 400oz pieces laying on the surface in the late 1800's early 1900's.

Glenn: try this out (copy the link between the brackets): [mrdata.usgs.gov/geology/state/map.html?x=-83.453389866478&y=32.653406156776&z=8#] -- that will get you to Georgia, put your curser on the map and pull it over to Washington (they fiddle with the maps periodically but this still works - for now). Yes I did have a stroke, but will keep teaching here on RU-vid for as long as I can. Wish you and the rest of the prospectors the very best of luck in the field! I'd be there if I could.

Matt. Luv all that you do. Are you open to doing some work for our foundation from time to time....we could talk and I could tell you what we have in store for some classes. see what you'd be willing or not willing to do. We are trying to change some things for as many people as we can as you are. Would just luv to chat ,see if we can change a few things for a few more people.

Admirable. And yes we are doing the same things, although I do this indirectly and never know the end result until someone emails or tells me here (and that has been thousands now and is very gratifying and why we do what we all do in training). So good - glad you're getting this off the ground for the kids. Right now we're in a complicated move from Florida, and our life and shop is in various boxes - so we're probably in no shape to help anyone until we get our own life back on track. Our prospecting and gem training (series) will resume (and feel free to use anything we do - that's what it's for) as we unpack and re-establish ourselves. Feel free to email for a number: flagold at gate.net.

how does someone like me become a small gold miner. How would I start.
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 3 года назад
You have started. The next step is go to known places where you can find gold reliably - "Where To Go To Find Gold Series" are four such places - books by Muriel Sibell Wolle (Bonanza Trail) give more. Go out to those places with the minimal equipment indicated and get your feet wet finding some actual gold. There was an organization I joined years ago: GPAA, not for the leases they have - but the right to camp on them for up to 2 weeks - that saved a ton of money as well as a simple book: "Free Campgrounds" -- learn now by looking at everything you can and reading everything you can while resisting the urge to buy everything you can and you'll do well. Good luck to you! - MM

As you can imagine, as the original gold teacher on youtube when it came out (youtube) - I get pitched just about every gadget and new "gotta have" gold thingie there is . . . but your's I approved. Very innovative. Unique and useful (my reservation here is that every unit gets that strong spring). Good job.
