Hope you enjoyed the video! Over the past dozen videos or so I had forgotten why I started this channel in the first place and what attracted me to RU-vid so many years ago. And it was the creative aspect. The ability to relay information but in a creative and engaging way. Hope I achieved that with this one. Thanks for watching. Friends don't let friends pay full price. See the video description for discounts.

This is like the saying " get out of your head" So good. I never played sports , but playing pickleball for the past 3 years has really unlocked part of my brain I didn't know I had. I am a hairstylist and I know about muscle memory... But super fast paced games I remember just suddenly realizing my brain knew what to do without me actually "thinking" . I was also told by a coach to practice a new skill while planning and thinking until it becomes muscle memory. It's so amazing hearing this additional information on what to focus on when practicing a new skill.

This is coaching for coaches. Players (especially beginners) don't know what they're doing wrong and wouldn't think of internal or external cues to focus on. Coaches may notice these things but not always deliver their instructions clearly. This video teaches coaches how to convey technique changes in a more understandable way for players who don't know as much. I will certainly be making an emphasis to use more external tips, thank you!

Internal and external cues are often very closely related. *Example:* On the tennis forehand, I think about the importance of racquet head lagging the wrist at the beginning of the forward swing. In order to achieve this, the arm and wrist needs to be very loose and relaxed. This relaxation will tend to naturally result in the racquet head lagging the wrist. If you think about the arm staying relaxed, I suppose it can be viewed as internal. Or you can think about the racquet head lagging, which would be an external cue. Both of these cues can achieve the same result. But I am not sure how useful it is to categorize them as internal and external. Many coaches view the racquet as an extension of the arm. The racquet and the arm are so inextricably connected that it is difficult to separate the two as internal or external cues. 🤔 🎾

Dude I can’t express how awesome & informative this video is. One day I was so bogged down on “the way I was playing” and it was so frustrating how different I was playing compared to other days - this has definitely gave me verbiage on why I was feeling stuck. Such a good video!!

It just happened to me today. I was tired from lack of sleep and was playing awful compared to a few days ago. Not happy at all and tried to do everything I could and internally beat up on myself. It seemed to get worse when it should have gotten better. I’m still upset and deflated. 😂 Your video was like an answer to prayers. 🙏🏼 12:38 I need to focus on something besides my ego, form, screwed up lesson, etc. Thank you so much ☺️

Great video production. Was that an Iron Man "hand"?🤣. Fascinating subject and every once in a while I feel like I am in the "flow" state but its seems like it evaporates suddenly....not able to express how the information you covered will help extend the flow but somehow I think it will. I will work on the external today on the court

Haha Tony Stark came through! Yeah, I struggle with that quite often. Something to consider trying is to focus on the result you want rather than how you’ll do it. Less analyzing and self-criticism and let it happen. I’ll actually have another video covering some more mentality stuff, another really interesting topic that was well researched. Let me know how it goes!

Excellent subject matter and discussion. Subconsciously, I’ve singled this problem out on my own but could not articulate it. There are “flow” days and self sabotage days on the court and I’m pretty sure it stems directly from external vs internal focus.

This video answers a question I’ve been asking myself for quite some time. “Where did that shot come from? How did I just manage that insane get without even thinking about it for even a millisecond?” At first I used to think it was sheer luck because I’m at best about a 3.0 player and pretty humble. But then I reflected on all my drills, practice, studying, lessons, etc. and thought about all my dedication. It wAs then that I appreciated my rote skills and reactions: I hadn’t thought not planned how to hit-it “just happened”. All the repetitive practice told my body what I needed to do before I took time to think about it. Your video helped solidify my pride in what I’ve been able to accomplish is just 7 months from first picking up a paddle. Instead of calling it luck, I now choose to own my automatic responses to a more hyper attention on the external game instead of listening to an inner dialog that nags at me to follow a “recipe”. Many thanks for introducing me to the Art of the Flow! 👏

Thanks so much for this comment. I felt the same way. There’s so much going on when you practice and play, it doesn’t all register to you consciously but things are happening in the backend. As my coach would tell me: As long as you go into each session with an intention and know what you’re focusing attention on, your game will continue to develop. I got more videos coming 🤓

Good technique (form) is crucial to advance to a higher level. When I am learning a new skill I pretend I am a Puppet attached to multiple strings that are guiding me through the desired movement with 'perfect form'. I do this until it can be done without conxcious thought. I enjoy multiple sports including PickleBall. I look forward to more of your Posts!

I’m going to rewatch, but I have a question. Would focusing on targets while hitting with the ball machine, be an example of external focus? I have crates set up where I want to hit third shot drops, crates to hit above to make sure my serves and return of serves are deep, and crates to hit when I am aiming for the opponent’s shoe laces. I’m also curious where I would look to to find the external focus ideas when shooting free throws as mentioned in the video. TRULY UNIQUE CONTENT!
@buildingpickleball
@buildingpickleball 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment. Targets fall under external, as that directs your attention to the effect of our movement and away from focusing internally (at body movements). Regardless of whether it's coming from a ball machine or a player. I got more videos similar to this on the way.

This is great, Brian! From your swings in the b-roll, I would not have guessed that you had no racquet sports background! 😊 This series is fascinating, especially for folks like me that are into the psychology of learning/teaching. Also, love the 60fps for this one! Are you using the a6700?

Always appreciate the feedback man. Likewise, into the pyschology and all the science and research as well. Yup, A6700! Not sure what I'll get next, maybe something more along the cinema line. But I did get an external fan for the camera for the podcasts, we'll see how it does tomorrow.

One small correction. The example you gave of internal vs external focus were all actually internal focus. Thinking about as your example of pointing the head of your racket in a specific direction is still considered an internal focus as that’s a function of how you hit the ball rather than the effect the shot has on your environment. A true external focus example would be the location of the ball so say aiming for your opponents backhand or thinking about a court position you want to reach after this shot. Basically anything you can physically manipulate that’s attached to your body like your body itself or your racket is still internal but focus on the effect on the environment like where the ball goes or the spin you put on the ball is an external point of focus.
@buildingpickleball
@buildingpickleball 7 месяцев назад
Appreciate the thoughtful feedback. From what I gathered from Wulf & Prinz, 2001: “externally focused attention is attention directed to the effects one’s body movement has on the external environment (e.g. movement of the bat or the flight of the ball leaving the bat).” Maybe I’m missing something?
@JosephTMyers

@@buildingpickleballnope you got it--previous said attempt at correction was apples to oranges--i think your entire applied premise you gave concerning "flow state" better describes what you are trying to point out as a whole in this video. Like ask a surfer what they think about when they surf and none of it is inside them, their body is all about reacting to what the wave gives them and how to stay in flow with that realm.
