I have a few questions. What is the size of the cells for the brood. How deep and the most popular openings in milliliter size and the drone size also. Thank you in advance

Hey Jim, I think the worker cells are 5.4 mm wide. The drone cells…I’m not so sure but definitely bigger than worker cells. The depth of the brood cells is a mystery to me. 🐝

@@thehivedoctor13 thank you. I wonder how to measure the depth. Hey great work. Thanks

Hello ,I am a new bee keeper in Africa ,Kenya my challenge is after 4 months of hive installation there is no bees in the hive ....what can I do to attract the bees in the hive.

Hello!! Many people attract honey bees using Lemongrass oil. Try dabbing just a little bit at the hive entrance. 🐝🐝

I live in central Texas and have a swarm the has decided to establish in our barn. They have been there since last May and I want to move them into a hive on the other side of of property. I have e purchased hive boxes, but we live on a Prarie and there is no cover at all and we usually have so.e pretty windy days with nothing to block the wind. Will this be OK? We plan to move the bees in about two weeks. Thanks for your time.

So if I understand what you’re saying, you want to relocate an established colony. If you move them into your own equipment and let them settle in that night, waiting until all the bees have moved into your box (this will only happen if you have the queen), then you should be able to successfully move them an hour or so after dark. Did I understand you correctly?🐝🐝

@thehivedoctor13 yes, but the main question is the Texas heat. Will they be OK in the open prairie sun with no cover? We have no trees and no cover.

Ah! Thanks for helping me understand this. Okay, as long as they have a hive cover and at least a standard hive entrance, they should be able to ventilate adequately. I used to keep bees in Florida and during the summers it was hot and humid, plus they were in the middle of a cow pasture with zero shade all day.

@thehivedoctor13 Do you suggest a screen bottom board for the summer months? Side note: I am watching them as we speak, and they are very active. Every bee that returns has a full pollen sack, so I am confident there is an active queen. They are in our barn between a 3/4" inside wall and a corrugated metal outside wall. Just to give you an idea of the situation. Also, just to give back story on them, last year at the end of April beginning of May, I was mowing by out mail box out by the road and the swarm was attached to Bush by the road. About 1500 feet from the barn. That same day I saw them begin to congregate around our barn and within about 15-20 minutes it became there home. I have went back and forth on what to do and after much research, and encouragement from my wife, I we have decided to try our hand at being a bee keepers. Sorry to be long winded, (heck of a side note!!) but just wanted to help you understand what I am trying to do, because I would really like for this hive to be successful, and maybe even enjoy the fruits of their labor!!

Oh sweet!! That sounds like a productive colony for sure! And 100% on a screened bottom board, yes!🐝🐝

Hey Johnathan, First I do know this is probably way to long, This is my situation and I am wondering if you have suggestions. I will be getting my first bees this spring and I am not so patiently waiting, and just so you are aware if you begin to feel spammed please say so I am overly excited and have been planning this for over 4 years now. the place I have in mind for my hives is away from the house chickens and our regular walking areas, the issue I am wondering about is that my neighbor has a massive light that comes on at night It lights up his whole yard and half of mine and stays that way all night to keep the hogs away. I am wondering if that would bother the bees since he is at a south east angle from where I was planning to put the hives it is my understanding the hive entrance would be best placed at south / southeast so they access the hive from that direction. Also I do a lot of herbal medicine with my other "yard friends" I have used camomile and licorice root for cats and chickens and many others as well. I have been looking into herbs for Bees and I am finding studies have been done on treatments for varroa mites using rosemary and thyme which are both anti viral herbs along with dandelion, Oregano chives hyssop and many others, First I know that Bees will seek out extra sap to make propolis in the hive if there is a problem with hive beetles or fungus they stick it in place preventing spreading. I am wondering if they had access to the antiviral herbs if they could put the pollen and nectar into bee bread and honey and be able to boost themselves and the offspring to be stronger and more resilient to the viruses carried by the varroa? I am still unsure how much of the benefits of the herbs could be used by the Bees, but they seem pretty good at cleaning and taking care of their space and each other. I am wondering if I plant herbs for the bees should I keep them at a distance from the hive so as not to attract other insects near the hives or will that be a minor issue? Also I am wondering what your opinion on the foul brood vac for Royal Jelly is? Lastly Thank you so very much for helping a newbie. Many Blessings

Hi, my hives face NE and they do fine with some morning sun exposure.. I'm planting herbs around the property, the bees find them and forage on whatever is the best food source. I use different essential oils when I feed sugar syrup to keep the bees healthy and reduce pest pressure. Just be aware that the stuff you read as beneficial may require massive amounts of herbs such as a lavender farm to impact your beehives.

Hey Jo! Awesome comment and very astute questions, I like it! First of all, I’m glad you’re excited after four years of planning. Congratulations! I understand your concern about the street lamp. The light itself shouldn’t bother them but my concern is that some of your bees would fly to it at night like bugs do. I’ve never been in that situation so I’m not sure. If there was a tree anywhere between the light and your hive then it would surely help. Second, about the herbs…yes! The herbal benefits are carried into the hive and will help with all pest & disease management. Concerning the vaccine for AFB…I have two things to say: I haven’t researched it in any depth. And that’s because I feel that when anything isn’t naturally occurring, the side effects are not worth it. I will not be involving my operation with the vaccine. I pre-treat for AFB in other ways and have never seen it in my hives. 🐝🐝

@@heavymechanic2 Thank you. I was thinking i could use a antiviral spray water and essential oil or tea to spray the not in use equipment as well.

@@thehivedoctor13 I mostly use Spearmint, TeaTree/Lavender, and Wintergreen oils in moderation emulsified into sugar water. The mix is similar to commercial feeding products and research shows feeding these oils to larvae has benefits against pests.
