I just got a 12 set prisma colour for xmas today, and I was thinking, if only I had a bigger set, then I saw this video! amazing tutorial thank you, new subscriber here
Cassandra Hanley ohhhh it sounds good. That has given me a few ideas as well. But I need to get back home for that though. Get ready to be tagged. ❤️😍😘
I totally agree with you Cassandra, you do not need that many pencils to achieve a project, most likely some of them would never be used, unfortunately your learn that the hard way, hope your beginner viewer follow you advise!!!
This is a very inspiring video. It’s encouraging to see such beautiful work done with “limited” supplies. I try to remember it every time I go pencil shopping!
Also those sets are really pretty......guilty smile after I bought a 120 set of Albert Durer watercolour pencils this week, had to compliment the polychromos.....just found your videos really enjoy your pace and style and its great to have someone who doesnt have an accent doing some really nice content .
Hehehe! Yeah, I know that feeling! Funny you mention the accent! I always feel like i am talking Steve Irwin level ocker compared to everyone else on RU-vid! It’s nice to hear I sound “normal” to someone!! 😂
Thanks so much for this video! I'm on quite a budget and needed to know that buying a small pack of prismacolors or polychromos can still achieve great results!
Great video, it was really nice to see that I was making the same colour choices you did as I watched! I guess that means that I really don't *need* to buy all the rest of the polychromos pencils.... but you're right... they just so pretty 😁 and the convenience factor is nice, too! Thanks for the video 😊
I know what you mean. The large sets look impressive, and I have spent a lot of my hard-earned overtime money buying them. But honestly, carefully layering colors does give you more control over the exact shade and I do believe it gives more depth to your finished piece.
+bleuvertetforetdepin I must admit this was actually really eye opening for me to create too, trying to colour match with the limited pencils was a really great way to stretch my colour mixing skills! Even for those with the full set, I highly recommend playing around and trying it out!
I think that this maybe the only real video on RU-vid that I have ever fully understood. In terms of content, product, shopping and accent. Great video. Sub'd. Go Stray. 🇦🇺
I am so amazed. I just watched magic happen. I bought a set of 12 Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils to compare to a cheaper brand. The quality is absolutely better but I was disheartened that the large sets are so expensive. I am color mixing challenged. Your video inspired me to make a color chart like you did with my pencils.
I found this very interesting. If a pencil artist gets burned out, they could take just those 12 colors and create with those. This is quite a challenge in color theory. Rather than just picking a pencil in the color needed, the artist can create that color. Very cool, indeed!
oooh ive done that chart with watercolors and glazing the colors, i should do that with my colored pencils. this video warms my geeky heart that loves color theory lol
+BrendaFOBRocks it was a little boring to create, but it actually was quite helpful. especially when seeing how the different order of colours could change the appearance of the resulting colour.
This has really been helpful I only done this with paint , never considered using it for color pencils. Will definitely try it out and see what I can come up with.
Nice job. I've been using colored pencils for a year now with nature journaling. I look at the tutorials and am finally doing a decent job determining what colors are actually present compared to what it looks like at first. Cyan, magenta, yellow color theory really helped.
+Greg Gillson that's fantastic! It would be great if there was a shortcut to learning that, but it really just comes from practice. Nature journaling sounds like fun! You must see some amazing things!
This is such a helpful video...truly appreciate it...cos I always found the 72 set unaffordable for me and it limited me from creating art with varied colours...this makes it so much more encouraging....I tried what you did and the results were wow!!!!
Just stumbled across this video - love it! I've never seen anyone else do something like this so thoroughly. :) I'm one of those collector types... so I have several full sets of art pencils... and I just colour in, but they're nice to have. LOL
This was a fantastic video! I've seen this done with oil paints but never colored pencil. I found it interesting when you were judging warm and cool and how much more of a certain color was needed. I'm going to try the same and see if I come up with something passable. Thanks!
When I went from Prismacolors to Polychromos, I was a little disappointed that the Polychromos didn't have as many options for skin tones. I went for the 60 set, but I like Polychromos so much better than Prismacolor now that I can tell I'll be buying the full set sometime in the near future. I've already bought a handful of open stocks.
Yeah.. colour theory really does take some time to really get your head around...but it is something best learned by doing, and I am sure you will get there! just keep playing ;)
I just found this video today, and it's really helpful!! I have many coloured pencils, all from different brands but rarely use them anymore ever since I got markers. Now I'm itching to play with them to make a colour chart :) new subscriber btw!
When i start with either new markers or colored pencils, i find art that im inspired by (i just started with colored pencils and am greatly influenced by renaissance style art, so i picked a few photos for reference and chose as many pencils as i could fit in my budget that matched the pieces, like reds and muted greens)
I might not be as a good artist as she. However, I personally believe that the more color variances you have the better. This is only for dry mediums though. Just keep in mind that the bigger set you get, the likelihood of you getting a color you might never use increases.
I essentially had to make all my colors if I wanted to actually make an advanced color drawing because there was no way in hell I could afford those massive sets of artist grade color pencils. And I used organic coconut oil in extremely small amounts to blend because I couldn't afford any of the "recommended" liquids for blending, plus I hated how just using water made it look lol
Oh, I choose not to count how many I’ve collected by now… but I remember the first 4 polychromos I bought. i was so stoked I even took a picture!!!! I couldn’t afford to get a full set and they really felt like I was spoiling myself . If I had to start again, it’s good to know what can be done with 12
Thanks for the inspiring video. I bought the twelve set of polychromos and I have enjoyed using them for the past year or so very much! However I dislike the two unnatural looking greens that come in the set!! So I just ordered a few extra greens to augment what I have already. :-) it kinda irritates me that a single pencil is ~$2.00 when in a full set they’re .70 c, but I keep telling myself I don’t NEED all the yummy colors....and I would be rebuying colors I already have....
With my prismacolors what I would do is layer on my main colour then use an eraser to kind of dull it out then I would lightly layer another color and erase it again then layer and erase until I'm satisfied, you can do more with 12 pencils than you think, just be creative!
I love this! My favourite thing about art is that we can use different techniques with the same mediums and all end up With fantastic results! What kind of eraser do you use to Lift the prismas?
Thanks for doing this one. Lol, I bought a 20 set of Caran D’ache luminance and have been mentally “woe is me-ing” that I don’t have more (I’ve not used them yet!). I think I’ll dig them out along with my colour wheel and give it a go. Thanks! (Hey, any chance you are in Adelaide and that you do classes??)
+Gail Russo oooh nice set! You will definitely be able to have fun with those. But you have to use them! The only way you can ever waste good art supplies is to leave them unused! Unfortunately I am on the Sunshine Coast :( but classes are something I am considering for the future.
+Nell Kells sorry nell, did you mean mineral oils or mineral spirits? Mineral oils (like baby oil or Vaseline ) will work to blend the pencils but will also leave an oily stain behind and can ruin the paper over time... where as mineral spirits evaporate completely away quickly after use and rarely damage the paper at all (I did have a small issue with some staining on a sheet of Stonehenge once, but only after I added way to much odourless spirit) I find watercolour papers work best with the spirits because they hold the pigment a little firmer, where using odourless spirit on smoother paper (like Bristol board) can cause the pigment to move around much more and be a little trickier to handle. But that purely comes down down to your preference! I hope that helps
+Akshay Kumar K the concept is the Smae with or without solvent. If you are working without the solvent, you just have to keep layering the colours until they start to visually blend on the paper or you can smooth them together with a blender or lighter coloured pencil. It can be a little more tricky to judge how the colours will turn out if your not blending as you go, but it does get easier with experience
Yeah, sure. When you spend all this time trying to get the color that you want right on the paper, it definitely improves the coloring experience, as oppose to just grabbing the color you want and spending time on actually coloring.
It’s odourless mineral spirits, and you can find it in the oil painting section of any art shop. (Any brand will do because they’re pretty much the same)
Thanks for this! I'm learning how to draw and thought about coloring in to mix things up, but I don't have the money or the room for a big set of pencils. I like to tinker and make things from scratch so I think I have the temperment for it. A 12 or 24 set would be easy to bring along as well.
@@CassandraHanley Thanaks for the encouragement! Since the holidays are coming up I might be able to get some pencils at a discount or a gift. The only high grade colored pencils I have right now are two Polychromos in sanguine and sepia to go with the Pitt artist pens I bought (to get free shipping, haha). They're my first oil based pencils and they're so smooth! I feel like they're helping me with my heavy handedness because they barely touch the paper and boom, color. It will be interesting to see what I can do with a small set, especially trying to make greens, browns and greys. In painterly way I guess. I've been into the muted/neutral colors lately and the small sets are lacking in that department.
This is insane. Neon green and bits of red makes it dark green. WOW. One question. Are all color pencils blendable with water, or those are special ones?
They are being blended with odourless mineral spirits, which breaks down the wax and allows the colours to blend.. of course this would work with water if you were using watercolour pencils
