I would start with Geoff John’s’ run I know I’m skipping Zero Hour and Kyle’s journey but it’s just a perfect starting point and John’s explains everything so well It also introduces the origins of all the other lantern corps

I think I started off Green Lantern by reading Blackest Night. I really enjoyed that comic so I went and started reading all the comics in order. (Well, technically not all of them since I started reading from when Hal Jordan became Green Lantern, not Alan Scott). It took me a whole year, but I eventually caught up. I haven't really met other Green Lantern fans in real life, but I like explaining to people I meet why I enjoy the comics and I hope to maybe convince someone else to check them out.

@@MosaicComics especially since a lot of people I've met have a bad taste in their mouth about GL. Literally a lot of them think of him as a joke, which is probably due to the simplicity of some of the constructs they use. At least in the movie. I'm assuming a lot of it has to do with the Ryan Reynolds movie. Which wasn't great but wasn't that bad either. Anyway, I convinced my friends that the Green Lantern Corps and mythos is dope, first by starting with explaining how the ring actually works and then delving into the more expansive shit from the lore that most non-fans won't know about even in passing through JL comics.

I was a huge Green Lantern fan… 30+ years ago, and dropped out of comics at some point. I’m trying to figure out how to get back into my old favourites Daredevil, the X-Men, and GL. There’s a pleasant simplicity to someone telling you exactly. What. You. Must. Read. But every time I see one of those “the right way” videos, it seems a) like a hell of a lot of work, and b) severely constraining. Thanks for this, “it’s all good” approach.

I start came late into my teen years when Blackest Night was current and that was my first ever comic book purchase. I knew about the DC Universe through the animated series around the time but I didn't know everything. GL Hal Jordan got me into comics as a whole. It was slightly overwhelming but I'm glad I've stuck with it. I hope more people will see how amazing GL lore can be. 💚

I started with Green Lantern Vol. 1 #1-38 that ran through the 1940s. I was a big sci-fi fan and aware of the Green Lantern mythos thanks to DC animation so knew I would love this character and I did. Since then, I've dabbled around but I'm very happy I started chronologically with the Silver Age.

Thus far I've only read 4 Green Lantern runs: I started with the Emerald Dawn 1 and 2 origin story. The reason why I wanted them is simply because I didn't know anything about Green Lantern that the movie and the Injustice videogame series told me about him, and I wanted to at least read his in-comic origin story so I had a more solid ground to stand at. It wasn't fantastic as what attracted me to Green Lantern were the complex and larger-than-life lore surrounding him. It was in Emerald Dawn, sure, but it was too cheesy to really hit me. It was still a pretty decent read but not enough for me to call myself a fan. And that's why my third Green Lantern run was Far Sector! I wanted to read something that had what I was looking for but didn't require too much context. Far Sector was awesome; Hal Jordan's still my man but I really liked Mullein and her dry sense of humor. The tone, the intrigue, world building and pretty much everything was so captivating I just knew it was time to start taking Green Lantern to heart. And now I'm currently reading the Gerard Jones' run and loving every page of it, I'm not that far off but it's by far the brand I look forward to read the most tbh. Can't wait to have a good green chunk under my belt so that I can interact with other Green Lantern fans. This brand is so awesome, goddamn.

Their book gave Green Lantern something it had been missing for a long time. Ever since Hal and the Corps came back, Green Lantern has been all about larger than life space adventures...which is great...but I really missed Lanterns being regular people who lived on Earth and had families and went on smaller, more grounded adventures. That's what Simon and Jessica's book was all about (for the first half, at least).

Never had a GL book before, but I know so much about them (but so little due to the lack of actually reading the issues and only going off of summaries from Wiki pages). I think they are one of my favourite DC heroes/groups. Probably top five, if not in the top three, for favourite super heroes of all. Anyway, I started reading Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps. The first issue is when Hal forges a new ring out of pure will with the aid of the Gauntlet of Krona. Or whatever it's called. Funny thing is they never depict where he puts it when he takes it off and puts the ring on. Then he just flies away. A few panels before that he was saying the Gauntlet was hidden because it was too dangerous and it sounds like it was the reason why he was becoming pure will. Comic logic man. Anyway, after reading Vol.2 I felt like I want to go back and read the Sinestro Corps War. Maybe even go further back and read the war of light and then the Blackest Night. Eh, I'll figure it out.

I got two issues of Mosaic in '94 from a guy and thought little of it (at 11), but they did introduce me to Hal, John and the fact that there were a bunch of lanterns out there, later he gave me GL 58 of the Marz run. Though the story itself wasn't much, the letters pages basically explained the whole Emerald Twilight saga and I HAD to know more! I soon found a shop with loads of back issues and (because the newer stuff wasn't there) decided then to start close to when I was born - When it lost the GA co-title in late '79. Thanks to that, some of my earliest reads were the fantastic 'Tales of...' backup series of the 80's. Funny thing is, I only got around to reading Emerald Twilight last year!

Personally, the comics I read need to be in chronological order, if I read a Batman story where Gordon is captain, then read another one and suddenly he’s commissioner, my brain wants to explode. I’ve only read the emerald dawn story from the 90s, so I was wondering if there’s any comic that picks up shortly after that story concluded, and if not the closest thing to that, I don’t wanna read a comic right after with a bunch of new lore or characters introduced, I’m aware reading comics (that aren’t part of one run) in order is pretty difficult but I’d like to try. I’ve mostly been reading Batman so with series like legends of the dark knight and Tim sale and jeph loebs Batman books, it’s pretty easy to figure out the closest thing to a chronological order, but with other heroes it seems pretty difficult.

@MosaicComics
@MosaicComics 2 года назад
When you get right down to it, Blackest Night is a pretty accessible story with an easily understood premise: superheroes vs super zombies. It's more complicated than that, but the story explains itself pretty well for anyone who hasn't read the years of Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps stories leading up to it. That said, those two series spend a lot of time building up to Blackest Night, and it feels like a big payoff if you've read the Lantern books that lead to it. If you're in the mood to read a big DC event book that revolves around Green Lantern, you'll probably be able to follow Blackest Night just fine, since these big events are always written with broad accessibility in mind, no matter how much mythology they may be built on.

In terms of stories that focus on Blue Lanterns, I think the strongest is still the first, "Rage of the Red Lanterns". Despite the title, it's the introduction of the Blue Lanterns, and really digs into what they can do and what they're all about. The story immediately after that, "Agent Orange", explores how Hope may not be compatible with some personality types. Most other stories use one or more Blue Lanterns as part of a much larger cast, so there won't be as much clear focus on the Blues (unless it's one of the various times they lose a home world). You could also check out the one-shot "Futures' End: Red Lanterns" depicting a possible future where Blue Lantern Guy Gardner is trying to erase the Red Lanterns one ring at a time, but it's been long enough that I don't remember much of what happened.

I'm the type that basically wants to stand up from my chair, point my finger and yell "NO, FUCK YOU! THERE IS A CORRECT PATH!!". I am a completionist generally and obviously the best way is to read everything starting at Green Lantern #1 in the golden age era, how else are you gonna understand the current DC timeline??? Oh boy.... I've tried the golden age approach, silver age approach, new 52, rebirth, geoff johns... As more years go by and after each failed attempt in terms of trying to read everything, you realize that people are completely correct in recommending "runs". Its the writer and not the character that makes for a good story. Green Lantern will not consistently be amazing through +80y of writing, that's just logic. Start anywhere and pay attention to writer/artist and just go from there. Timeline means nothing in DC at this point anyway.
@MosaicComics

It may sound a little morbid, but I broke myself of being a completionist early on when I realized that most of the things I like enough to consume and/or collect will likely still be made long after I'm gone. So even if I did manage to hit everything that came out before my lifetime and during my lifetime, my lifetime would most likely stop before that franchise does, thus I would never be able to complete it. The instinct at that point is to give yourself some kind of logical cutoff for success, but at that point you're no longer being a completionist anyway, so you may as well just read whatever you want.

I wasn't that into Venditti's run back when it was coming out, but I've been re-reading it recently and there's more to like than I remembered.

@@MosaicComics I know some people didnt care for his new 52 portion ( although I liked it ). But it seems the general consensus is that Hal Jordan and the green lantern corps is very good to great. I liked the new 52 portion, but loved the. Rebirth portion. Just my opinion.

There's really no explanation that's both simple AND accurate, so I'd advise you to watch my second video ever, "The White Lantern is a Confusing Mess". Then you'll know everything there currently is to know about the White Lantern.

should I read Geoff Johns or is he too much of a Joss Whedon level bad guy not worthy of my money?
