I love my ‘91 sporty chop. A thing to remember when people say they aren’t real choppers, a 1200 sporty and a Shovlehead or both 74 CU. And a lot of the bikes in my old chopper mags are Iron Heads, XS 750’s, T100’s and BSA’s. Even a lot of 70’s HA guys rode swig arm Iron Heads. Ride what you like, and do whatever you think is cool.
My first chop was a 74 cb750. This one is an 86 evo 883, that was swapped to 1200. 21 t front sprocket, swapped to 24t. 16"rear tire swapped to 18". Foot clutch, suicide shift... It'll probably kill me.. 😆
I was at a bike meetup 1 night in Houston, I rolled up on my hog, 08 crossbones, I was the only hog there, but a couple mins later some nerdy ass dude rolled up on a bicycle with a lawn mower motor, no S**t. So he came up to me and was like hey sir can I park my bike next to your HD? I said yea man no worries! So he ended up being a cool cat and always wanted a hd but could not afford it! The moral of the story is ride what makes you feel good!
Youre a really calm dude and interesting to listen to. I don't even have a chopper nor a Harley, but I enjoyed the whole thing. Congrats for the channel!
Haha, thanks. I’m kinda nervous on camera. I’m pretty much forcing myself to make these Videos. Hopefully I get a bit more Comfortable in front of the camera. I really appreciate that you like the videos even though you’re not into choppers. That’s probably the best I could hope for.
I came across a chopper, was 10 year show, not finished, big money moter, springer long fork. 1979 sporster moter. I only like chopper s, saw first one auto ramma, was a kid. Got super lucky finding this one. Hard tail. And it's cool looking
Hell yeah Dan D builds a bad ass chopper for sure. Finished my Sportster 883 this year and it was a blast. Selling my dyna to build another one this year. Good stuff man!
I have a video briefly shows my evo chopper. The wiring for the 04 plus bikes are actually easier than people realize. All you need is to add the pre 04 cam cover so you can run normal ignition. Then plug the crank sensor and mod the intake to get rid of mass sensor. Makes the wiring as simple as a 90”s. I’m currently rebuilding mine right now to swap out the rubber motor mounts for solid ones. Paint and polish everything. Back in 08 when I built it my goal was to take a new bike and make it look old and vintage. Now that it’s actually old and almost vintage I’m going to make it look all new and shiny lol. And now they make springers for the 04 plus so I’m adding that. 😎😎😎. Chop on
Great Video. Glad I found your Channel. I just started building a honda shadow bobber, but now after watching this. I want to build a Sportster chopper.
I have an 06, And love it! It has an FXR frontend. A Dyna tank, soft tail rear fender, I did not hardtail it ! Being older i don't have the back I used to! Make friends with your local Harley shop! NOT a dealer! The local shops are guys just like us! And have or can get the hard parts! And as for sportys being a girls bike! I have been a biker for 40 years and have only owned sportys! And I think are the best bike Harley built! They can be anything you can think of! And have a huge support system!
My '81 Shovel is my daily, but a few years ago I got an awesome deal from an 82 year old guy here in town on a first year 1200 Sporty (1988) that is BOX STOCK and he bought it new. The paint is immaculate and it has less than 20K on the clock. It even had the original tires on it! I stashed the stock exhaust and bars and put some drag pipes on it and jetted the carb. No way I'm choppin' it. P.S. '86 to 90 Evo Sporties are the way to go...4 speed and chain drive. Belts are for pants!
@@letscheckitout1985 Shitty weak trans? I guess that's why they didn't change hardly at all for over 30 years. I've owned several Sportys , both ironhead and evo, and have never had 'magnets that fell off inside the primary'. I think you're basing your opinion on one bike you had, and are judging all Sportsters on the one clapped out example you owned. But hey, that's just my opinion.
@@thatsmrharley2u2 no I actually never had that problem two of my friends dead and we all know how to wrench you obviously don’t know how to research Google it you’ll find out that it’s true and just because somethings used for a while doesn’t mean it’s excellent if you think of the transmission on the four-speed is superior to the five speed on the newer evos again you are wrong. I’m not gonna argue with someone who doesn’t even know basic background history on transmissions of Harley’s.
@@letscheckitout1985 Show me where I said the 4 speed was better than the 5 speed. I've been riding and wrenching for over 60 years, keyboard commando. Find somebody else who believes your crap.
I'm working on a 1986 1200 swapped 883. I don't know anything about working on them. So, I did the smart thing, and chopped it in half. I know some people, so, it'll work out. Plus, I made friends with a blacksmith who was on Forged In Fire. So, it might end up being a bit cool, at the same time. Dude built a cow pusher for his Durango, with a rams skull in the center of it.
plus side to the early evo sportsters are the branch bathtub chamber heads which harley eventually (over a decade later) incorporated into their standard production line
As you can see from my profile pic , i have a 99 sporty , and love it , put 12k miles on it last year , doing a big bore kit this winter with few other goodies aswell
Cody, I'm with you on the tough guy style. I've always dug the NorCal styled bikes -- not the "digger" style. I'm referring to the single down tube rigid (or swingarm) frame, no neck rake, a little stretch in the down tubes, and possibly the rear frame tubes bent (looped) around the rear axle plates (like the old Motor Shop frames). I'd run a fork that's no longer than six inches over stock. Fork gaiters add to that tough look -- those boots also keep the road crud out of the fork seals. There's a shop in Ohio that builds the same kinds of Sportster choppers. I wish Harley would have kept the EVO Sportster in their production lineup and just added a sixth cog in the transmission. Yeah, Harley-D has to comply with enviro-wacko Euro standards regarding their bikes being sold overseas. How in hell did we ever come to this?
Something no one talks about is Evil Knievel and Sonny Barger both rode sportsters. Most people that talk crap have never rode one. If you have you know that the are really cool bikes! I love mine and I man enough to say it! Lol
My first was a 76.Bitch had that fucked up kickstart system and I got the fucked up knee to prove it. But it sure was fun. Especially with the Truett& Osborne stroker flywheels!
Great advice 👍 I've been trying to figure out a platform? Was wondering what part of earth you play in? Hard to find similar interest where I sit, great video and thanks for your time. Frames and frame necks regarding a long front end? Anything, it can't be simple?
Good videos. I enjoy this channel. I like the how to vids you’ve done I think a lot of people can use them. And your sit down talks are good. I enjoy the history of the bikes also. I think your going to grow this channel pretty quickly. Good job!
Dog, so glad I stumbled upon your channel. I've got a lot of down time at my 9-5, so I'm always looking for chopper shit. Stick with it, experiment with videos, you've got my Sub. Peace.
I have a 1995 883 converted to a 1200, I had glides when I was younger, but with my arthritis I'm finding the Sporty much more user friendly to ride and park etc, never was a real big fan of tupperware anyway. As for the girl's bike part of it, I find if I strap a couple of coconuts on my chest, I can ride the hell out of it anyway. A real biker doesn't care what other people think of his/her ride anyway!
Dude I built a chopper out of an 02 sporty and love it so much I decided to chop another sportster I’m in the middle of now. Could have built a chop out of my big twin Evo but honestly just wanted to do another sporty. Girls bike or not I love ‘em.
You made a hardtail sporty evo or rocked the full suspension and chopped the neck? Im planning to build a hardtail sporty but first i want to build a stock sporty chopper and just change the front end, since im new to the community i think its easier to learn little by little. Plus i heard the hardest part of building one is figuring out the front end setup and chopping the neck. Am i right?
I have a 1999 883 Harley Sportster. It has close to 400,000 miles on the original engine. Two up in Florida in August the engine oil temperature is 200°. I've ridden the bike so much I wore out the original front end. But my 1965 Triumph with a bolt on hardtail and a solo seat rides better.
Cool man guess I'm a little late finding this channel. I've done a few evo sporties they are the best platform from a reliability standpoint and just sheer stable of parts available. Its a blank slate that you can turn into something really cool depending on either skill, savy, or budget. Latest one is set up real fast an tall called "the mean girl" Anyway keep the girls bike thing going i like picking up basket case sportsters for under 500 bucks.
Cody, thanks for the video. For a few years I’ve been thinking about building an Evo sportster chopper, but I don’t have tools or skill….fortunately I know someone that can build one. Do you think it’s crazy to sell a 09 Dyna low rider to build a sportster chopper?
I've owned a 70 Shovelhead and a 1988 1200 sportster and the Sportster was quicker, faster (there is a difference) and more reliable. I've also known people that owned Sportsters that were some of the most dangerous people I've ever known. "Never insult a man or the horse he rode in on, you never know what road he just pulled off of."
There too small for choppers unless your a tiny dude or lady. I built one with a stretched hardtail and it was perfect however that was lots of mods beyond most abilities.
It really sucks that Sportsters were tagged with "a girls bike" line. I love the Sporty because it's one of the best looking bikes on the planet. At 6'3" I own and ride the hell out of an '07 Road King (my favorite bike on Earth) but if I came across a super deal on an Evo Sporty I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.
Agreed. I have a 1997 883, bought brand new because that's what I could afford at the time. It was made fun of by the big twinners. I don't care though, I still have it. I also have a 2002 Dyna with the 88 twinkie. Can you guess which one is more fun to ride, and which one would go if I had to part ways with one?
''Not Cool'' enough to build a chopper. Disregard all the engineering that was developed over the years. Tear apart a perfectly fine ride to create ''Cool'' ride that only suits YOU. Most rides will end up unreliable basket cases or severely devalued products. Just part of the thinking process.
I've got a 2003 electra glide that l've put an insane amount of money in. Beautiful bike. Picked up this 1200 2009 sporty for cheap. Totally more obnoxious an fun for this 63 year old man. I've commented several times before... Am frustrated about how to get started Chopin it up. Information on the web and you tube isn't that helpful. Perhaps you could throw some books or people who live to help newbies my way?
