F.A.Q.
1. KATE you read so many Murakami novels?? Where do I start??
AYE YOU'RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE YO
2. How do you pronounce your username?
Pfeil is pronounced “file” - it’s German
3. What is your college major/what do you do in college?
I was originally a nutrition major and I’m now in English Education. I’m planning on teaching English in Korea
4. What languages do you know?
English, Spanish, German, Korean and ASL. Yes, feel free to leave comments in any of these languages and I’ll try my best to reply in that language - my German is a little rusty since I only use it with my Grandparents and I’m currently learning Korean soooo cut me some slack lol English and Spanish though I’m (basically) fluent.
5. YOU LIKE KPOP???? WHAT GROUPS/PEOPLE/SONGS?
Yes, I love Kpop - I post kpop related unboxings/MV reactions and first listens and stuff like that on this channel! My bias groups are BTS and EXO (and EXOCBX) and my UB is Zhang Yixing. I also fucking LOVE Bastarz, Seventeen, Blackpink, Dean, CL, and GD. I also watch kdramas so totally feel free to chat with me about them in the comments!

Why do u think she thinks it's boring? Im hesitant to read it now because of this review
@timothylau9703
@timothylau9703 4 года назад
(First of all Norwegian Wood was my first Murakami novel I've ever read and it's still my favourite of all time) I guess the reasons why Kate finds Norwegian Wood not as interesting as Murakami's other works is firstly because Kate enjoys the magical elements more. Plus Norwegian Wood is the kind of novel that is very closely connected to post-WWII Japanese, especially in the 60s where political campaigns such as Zenkyoto (Japanese Communist movements) occured. And that social background is quite far from what and where we are like right now.
@originalname2786
@originalname2786 4 года назад
@@timothylau9703 you do have to remember that the war is very prevalent just about all of his works, it's just that Kafka was written closer to the time
@timothylau9703
@timothylau9703 4 года назад
@@originalname2786 Seems like there's some misunderstanding. I didn't mean WWII or post-war trauma in my previous comment, please don't get me wrong. What I meant by "post-WWII Japan in the 60s" is basically the Zenkyoto anti-Imperialism movements. This bit of contemporary Japan history is pretty far away from readers now. And that with such a focus into the contemporary aspect of life in the 60s, NW and some of Murakami's earlier works may not appeal to all, because of the cultural and historical barriers. Thus I find Kate's opinion understandable. Of course Murakami does go back to the post-war experience from time to time in his other works, but he usually approaches them from a surrealist or magical perspective, in search of lost memories. It is also reasonable why some find this approach more interesting rather than just recounting "real life" events in a realist manner. Assuming most if not all of Murakami's die-hard fans came for his magical realism. 😉

It's frustrating to me too haha I mostly just delete them now, but it's still quite frustrating to have to see/read them still! And I was told by my teacher to wait until I was older to read Murakami, and I'm so happy I did - which is why I ALWAYS say he's for an older audience! :)

My first ever exposure to H. Murakami was his short story Samsa in Love. Which was published in the New Yorker. What struck me was the way he wrote about the topic of love. Also the language and the imagery. I know Charles Bukowsky is on another playing field. But theres a kind if rawness in Murakami style of writing that leaves one tasting the tiniest speck of dirt. Great video. Makes me want to make one about where i actually started with Haruki murakami.

I started with his collection of short stories titled The Elephant Vanishes. For me this was a helpful introduction to Murakami, like a sampler platter that showcased his different styles and thematic interests. Some real gems in that collection! My spouse, who introduced me to Murakami, had a completely different route. Her first Murakami title was Hard Boiled Wonderland, which I wouldn't recommend for first time readers, but that was the book that reeled her in. Goes to show that although everyone is different and drawn to different things, there is no right or wrong way to fall in love with Murakami.

Thanks for the recommendations! I think I am the only person in this area that has read Murakami so I have no one else to get recommendations from. I completely agree with your suggestions about the adult themes. Although if a younger person were to read these books some of the themes might be missed depending on the book. It’s been awhile since I’ve read them to recall how explicit they were. But even the thread of the stories would be complex. I started with 1Q84 for some reason and loved it. Then read Colorless and loved it also. I just bought the new release but I think Kafka sounds good too. I will give it a try. Thanks!

I read Kafka on the Shore when I was 25 and I was just starting to get into magical realism. I knew it was risky to start with, felt assured because I studied metaphysics previously. I started with "After Dark" :p really liked it. And after that went to "Kafka on the Shore" which was quite a bizarre read. The only problem I had with "Kafka on the Shore" is from a technical standpoint it is like a standard coming of age fantastical novel. But towards the end, it is mentioned that Kafka himself does not move back to the real world because of self-actualization but because of the lady, he is in love with, "told him to do so" which kind of really disappointing as there is no real conclusion to his character. What do you think?

Murakami is one of my favourite authors as well, and I think he's great because his novels are really subjective and people have such varied opinions. That is very true - I can see why someone might get passionate about someone not liking one of their favorite novels (like I will always defend Janie Chang and her novels!) but it still seems inappropriate to me for adults to be attacking some random girl on the internet for her opinions - and not just me! A lot of people deal with the same thing and its a shame :( and same actually! I personally LOVE hearing WHY people enjoy Norwegian Wood/Sputnik Sweetheart just because I didn't like them very much! Rather than being liek "well you're dumb cause you liked those" I go "WHY" and genuinely want to know the difference in what they think versus what I think - that's how the best discussions are started! :)

+Kate Pfeil I agree totally, differences in opinion usually start the best discussions, and it's a shame when someone decides to leave a mean comment instead of actually engaging with what you're saying.

I really enjoyed this video. You shouldn't have to apologize for expressing your opinions in a civil manner. Anyone who says you're acting bitchy doesn't have a clue. My first Murakami book was After Dark when I was 19. I had just come back from a summer exchange program in Tokyo and wanted to give Murakami a try after my host dad recommended him. The first time I read it, I thought it was pretty boring, but I did like the atmosphere and the dispassionate, first-person plural point of view of the narrator. I thought he really did a good job of capturing the mood and atmosphere of Tokyo in the wee hours of the night. Plus, the way he expresses the theme of disparate segments of humanity coming together to make up this massive organism is absolutely sublime and accommodates all sorts of interesting interpretations. 1Q84 is one of those novels that takes work to get into, mostly because of its length. Some segments were a slog, but towards the end I couldn't help but feel some affection for the characters. Definitely wouldn't recommend it for first-time Murakami readers. Still haven't read Kafka on the Shore, but will try it out after watching your video. Cheers!

Have you read On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning? I found it to be the prettiest short story I've ever read. It touched me deep. I'd like to know your thoughts on it. I'm still in the process of reading his novels. I'm definitely use your video as a guide. Thanks.

i'm 45 and started with 1q84 despite a friend (huge fan of HM) had told me to begin with kafka on the shore. came here today to see if it would be possible and guess, for me, that's the perfect choice. and from there, i'm intending to jump right to the weird ones. thanks. :D

I really appreciate the honest reviews of each of his novels and your recommendations on where to start. I have been wanting to start reading him and would of started at Norweigan Wood like most do. But thinking of it, they don't usually continue on then. Hmmmm. Great video.

I've been meaning to read Murakami for years, I finally started with Wind Up Bird Chronicle and I'm halfway through. It's pretty good. Glad to hear it was your first of his as well. I can see why you wouldn't recommend it but I'm glad I started with it.

I read 1q84 as my first book. But it took me 2 months. Halfway through I read After Dark though, which helped me because I really like “the whole thing happens in a day” kinda thing.

Hard Boiled Wonderland is a beautiful novel and probably remains my favorite of Murakami's work. It reminded me so much of a Satoshi Kon film but with more philosophical aspects

I've read (almost) all of Murakami's short story collections and just starting 'Men Without Women' which I absolutely love so far. My first collection was 'The Elephant Vanishes' and I dug it so much, I picked up 'Norwegian Wood.' Got halfway through it and had to put it down. It was too commonplace, as far as narratives go, for me. I then made the mistake of watching the movie version and it simply didn't capture the atmospheric quality of the novel. I haven't picked up another Murakami novel since, but once I finish 'Men Without Women' will make another go of it. Appreciate the review.

I’ve heard a little bit and I love him, what do you think about listening to the audible versions of things he’s written? I’m thinking of listening to Kafka On The Shore. Or would you recommend reading instead? Thoughts? Also I really want to read 1Q84, but I’m daunted by it’s length! I’m a fast reader, though.

Hi your video has helped me to pick up his books. The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is my first book of his. I really enjoyed it and it will always have a special place in my heart. I liked May’s character so much, her quirky mind and questions posed to Toru especially in her series of letters despite receiving no replies

Just read Kafka on the shore ( first and only murakami novel under my belt) and thought it was pretty good. He is a very articulate, thought-provoking author and I like your positive, up-beat reviews of his books. Thanks-a-bunch (and you're really cute btw)

Kafka on the shore, after dark 1q84 and killing commendatore are my faves. Then sputnik sweetheart, colorless tsuruku tazaki, norwegian wood and south of the border west of the sun. I started with norwegian wood.
