Where will I put my Tiny House?

Over the last few days I've been asked where I would like to put my tiny home once it's built. I have lots of ideas and options, which will need to be reality-tested, but my thoughts are leaning towards living for the next 2-3 years in Sydney, then moving to the South Coast of NSW afterwards.
Sydney is a beautiful city that I have come to call home. I moved here with my family in the year 2000, and have been in-and-out of Sydney ever since. After several years studying, working and travelling interstate and overseas, I returned to Sydney in 2016 and 'settled down'.
Still, I'm an outdoors person, and there's nothing like having a beautiful lake, or the beach, or a mountain range, for your back yard! So, after I've established a couple of things here in Sydney - mainly my work with Victoria's Flowers and HSM Studio - I intend to move my tiny house to somewhere like Gerringong, Gerroa or Kangaroo Valley.
That's where I'm at at the moment... It's likely that things will change in the coming months/years, so stay tuned for more updates!

Dude, your dream sounds pretty much 100% the same as my dream - small beautiful town, good people, community life... I want to achieve all this too!

Jennifer Clark Yep, the dream has begun! I moved the house to the blue mountains a few weeks ago and had been living here ever since. Actually, I live here half the week, then in Sydney for the other so I'm close to work. Need to work for a few years to pay off the house and build up some savings, then I'll be done 😊 Tell me about your dream.

Sounds awesome! My dream is similar - I grew up in a small town so I've always loved that kind of community life. I really want to be able to help people and serve others, maybe overseas in poor countries, or maybe in Australia. Houses are so expensive these days, and people have so much extra stuff, that is just seems logical (and maybe romantic? in a sense) to downgrade and live a more simple life. Then you can be free from an enormous mortgage to do the things that fulfil you.

That's the idea - simplify your life to free up time and money to focus on the things that really matter. Easier said than done! But certainly worth the journey in my experience so far. It's great that you want to help others. I was a community development working for about 10 years. Looking back before I started that career, I remember someone telling me that before you can help other people, you need to help yourself. I didn't take too much notice of that at first, but 10 years later I think she had a point. I couldn't sustain helping others without having a place of my own, and some of my own issues sorted out. So I'm taking some time off from community work for a little while, with the intention to get back into it in the near future. So where are you based at the moment? Where do you think you would like to go? I'm interested in finding small towns and villages that have a vibrant culture in them. I think I've found that here in the Blue Mountains, but it would be cool to find other places too.

Don't forget if your twenty something......all those friends going up and down this driveway as well. To get property that has enough space you'll have to go out 45km or more.

how does the sewerage work with these dwellings?

Douglas SPRINGALL good question mate. It depends on how you set yours up. Some people connect theirs to town sewage, and others have a filtration system for their grey water to go into their garden.

Mogendi Stories so that would be grey water as distint from black water as such a filtration system would probably require chemical which would have to be periodically dumped such as what exists in a caravan

Yep, a chemical additive can be used for water container-based caravan systems, whilst other systems don't use chemicals like those found in marine toilets. I've seen some people use dry (aka 'composting') toilet systems, and others using incinerators. Take your pick :-)

Matthew Hedges g'day mate, yep I'm at Springwood, Blue Mountains at the moment. I've been here for about 2 months now. Where are you looking to park?

Ideally (when I completed it) somewhere like you were looking, I'm going stealth with mine, hopefully that will mean whilst I'm working I will be able to stealth camp Monday to Friday and then get out an about travelling on the weekends. I'm living in Springwood myself at the moment.

Matthew Hedges wow awesome coincidence! Have you been living in the area for long? I'm really loving it here. I live in Springwood (in the house) 4 days a week, and stealth camp in Camperdown the other days so I'm close to work at the QVB. Are you planning on stealth camping with your tiny house? I'd be happy to have a chat over coffee with you if you'd like to share experiences?

I've recently started working in the centre of Sydney, and I'm really enjoying living 20 minutes away now. There's plenty of large properties that I can approach the owners for within about 10km from the city centre, and there's definitely one person that's renting out land about 30 minutes by train from the city too. I'd consider this the furthest I'd want go at this stage.

How does it effect council?. Even if the person agrees to the land rental do you need council approval?.. Hope you can answer this :-)

Jo M It's not a straight forward answer because it depends on each council, but generally speaking no you don't need council permission to park a tiny house, as long as it conforms to 'caravan' standards in terms of size and mobility.

Mogendi Stories oh thanks, although caravan laws are quite strict, isn't there a limit of time you can have a caravan at a property?..

Jo M usually no. it's not about how much time the caravan is on the property, but how long a person is allowed to stay inside a caravan. it's usually up to 90 days per year. how they can monitor and enforce this, I don't know...

Mogendi Stories I don't think so. Just stumbled across your video and was surprised to hear that there was someone offering mortgages on tiny homes. I knew it was too good to be true!

No worries. Actually there is! My builder gave me a couple of options to apply - one of them with the Commonwealth bank. They are not normal home loans, but rather RV/caravan and renovation loans.
