Join us today as we explore one of my favorite backyard birds, the Carolina Chickadee! These tiny birds are packed with personality and fascinating behaviors that will leave you amazed. Did you know they are incredible mimics and have fantastic memories? They can remember where they've hidden thousands of food caches for months! Carolina Chickadees are also super social and can live up to 10 years in the wild.
First described in 1824, these birds are named for their distinctive "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" call. They thrive in a variety of environments, from deep forests to suburban backyards, and their populations have remained stable thanks to their adaptability.
You can find these charming birds mostly in the southeastern United States, from New Jersey to Texas and Florida. They love deciduous and mixed forests but are also happy in suburban areas with plenty of trees and shrubs.
When it comes to nesting, Carolina Chickadees prefer natural cavities in trees but will gladly use a nest box if you provide one. To attract them to your feeders, offer sunflower seeds, peanuts, suet, and mealworms.
