Where You Should WORK? Refinery VS Power Plant Boilers 

This must be a very regional or possibly non-union perspective to refinery vs. powerplant work. I've been in both settings as a union boilermaker that shaped up out of a hall, working at all types of oil ref/n-gas/nuke plants. I'm currently working for an oil refinery in the northeast now for 14 years, for house maintenance doing field work as well as project execution overseeing union Boilermakers/ Fitters/ Carpenters, etc. Boilermakers in this area of the country(and nearly all the nation in a union shop) typically have jurisdiction over all work performed within the confinds or the 1st flange off a pressure vessel(obviously excluding electrical/instrumentation, etc) Youd be expected to weld and fabricate boiler tubes, vessel support structure, the blanking of pressure vessel flanges, vessel penetration welds including: nozzle take offs, manways, tray support rings, thermister pad installs/supports and any and every internal operational process structure e.g.- reactor bed, gunnite insulation support anchors, fractionation trays/beds and possibly more than any other known task of a Boilermaker might be the design and execution of lift plans for some of the largest lifts in the world along side engineering and lift directors. The list of activities as a Boilermaker in both settings is just enormous and does differ between the two, but both are very significant in variation. And both deserve huge amounts of respect for their required skill sets...among the very small group if men that make this world functionally work... god bless ALL crafts and tradesmen, union, non-union alike.
