This show FASCINATED me when I saw it back in 1979 as a kid. I discovered an electronic organ that had automatic drumbeats & one-finger chord accompaniment, and I turned on a "rock" beat that sounded like the clock on this show, and played the theme song, and thought it was so cool to replicate the theme. I go to a convention called Strategicon in California where they play simulated game shows, and I hope they do Whew at some point.
That contestant needed a little decaf, haha. Thanks for posting this, my first time seeing the show in any form, minus a few seconds here and there over the last decade.
So freaking cool. I have never seen this champion before, but I love WHEW. I thought she shouldn't have been allowed to call LONGSHOT on the first segment - there was 5 seconds left when she hit the block. But no matter. Such a fun show - I I know it's nearly impossible with the amount of bloopers to write, but I'd love a home version of this, or one done with Flash. Thanks for posting, J.
It seems like it was an interesting show. Supposedly Tom Kennedy said about this show, "We were a hit, but when they found out we were on, they cancelled us". I'm not sure if the quote went exactly like that. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Robert Lopresti Well it was on CBS from 1979-80 after Beat the Clock with Monty Hall. This was an awesome show but was ruined with the celebrity format.
Adrian Munoz Ironically, "Beat The Clock" also went to a celebrity format around the same time as "Whew!" and died about three months before "Whew!" did. BTC's announcer was Tom Kennedy's (James Narz) older brother, Jack Narz, himself no slouch in game show hosting.
I'm a bit confused on this one. When Steven is blocking, he's wearing a yellow coat, but when he's charging, it's a blue coat and when he goes to the Hall of Villains he's back to the yellow coat. Is this one of those re-shot moments that "due to technical difficulties, portions of the game have been edited or re-created?"
Awesome getting to see this... just curious, do you know how to read the slate number? I'm assuming the "133" means 133rd episode produced, but not sure what the "A" prefix or "D" suffix mean...
jricci9 Hey, it wasn't THAT bad of a show! I could have seen it working as a daily syndicated show... just dump the celebs, but keep the rule about someone who sweeps the match getting an extra board against the Villains, so it could be self-contained.
Amen, man! I say it could still work today... money-wise, inflate everything in the main game by 10; and for the Gauntlet, each Villain pays out $1,000, with a full win awarding $100,000.
I sure hope the owners of Whew don’t do what happened to Dream House, which was wait too long to sell reruns only to have the tapes destroyed by a natural disaster.
