To say the grid for the 1923 French Grand Prix at Tours was diverse is an understatement. The 6 cars which competed each brought distinct solutions to the challenge of making the automobile go fast. From the bullet-shaped Bugatti, to the supercharged Fiat and the outlandish Voisin. Each car had its own unique character, quirks, and design. Its not hard to see why Grand Prix Racing in the early days was such a thrill, and after all, 1923 was not too long ago.
Nicecuppatea at RaceDepartment has finally finished the full set of cars from the race most recently with the Rolland-Pilain A22. So how do they all compare? What makes them all unique? Lets find out!

The fact you can ask us this question! I am tired of random single cars in racing sims which can only be used for hotlapping. This mod is exactly what sim racing should be.

Definitely the Avions-Voisin. They really thought outside the box and stuck to their strengths with their background in aviation and sleeve-valve technology. The C6 with its innovative propeller-powered water pump and aluminium body is such an oddball of a car that I can't help but respect it. Everything from its aircraft-wing design to its eccentric, liberal interpretation of the rules is just so quintessentially post-WWI French, and I mean really -- just look at it. How can you not love such a wacky thing, even at the time.

@@piericroussel7479 yeah :) in 2005 I started working at iRacing so I left the site to the other admins and unfortunately they had backups fail (or fail to backup) five times. I got the domain back a few years ago. I'm Tim, who founded Legends Central that became RSC.

23:34 Some of those bricks are actually from the legendary Brickyard that is Indianapolis, they were added to the start in 2011. I’ve been coming to Goodwood every year since 2010 (besides 2020) and will be at the Revival this year too for the first time. Looking forward to the historic racing there immensely.

I am not sure if road simulators have appropriate surface physics for the old circuits. The surface these cars usually raced on was more like glued (or just wet) gravel rather than asphalt as we know it today. And if there was a hard surface somewhere, it was often concrete. The Nurburgring, finished in 1927, was one of the first circuits with a more stable surface on the whole track. But still well into the 1930's it was not a norm for racetracks to be well paved.

I work with vintage and prestige cars, the last one that rolled out of our workshop was a 1927 Bentley 4.5ltr, I absolutely love having these cars in Assetto and I love that you make such thoughtful and fun content about them and lots of other interesting motorsport history as well. Keep up the good work! (I still hope for a decent quality Bentley 4.5ltr mod, as it did win LeMans in 1928)

I've worked as a steward at Goodwood Revival and Festival of Speed for a few years now and it's really strange to see both the circuit and the hillclimb rendered virtually like this! Love the video, great driving!

With so many historical cars consigned to either the museums of the world, reserved to private collections, or in the worst cases buried in the ground lost to time, sim racing allows these historic icons to be at least somewhat recaptured in their former glory.

The Voisin is my favorite, how cool of a car. Super light with the little prop on the front and staggered axle widths make it so cool. As well as the seating height of the driver and the rectangular wheel almost make it a tiny view into the future of motorsport.

Another awesome video, loved the intro. My grandmother was born in 1899 and lived until 2005, so for me 1923 isn't something from a forgotten past. And these cars are a must have, such a blast to race with. Fonteny has and 'old roads' skin which make that track even more perfect for these beauties :) And someone on Reddit recommended me the Napoli track which is also perfect for this :)

This reminds me that between the wars, it was perfectly normal for Grand Prix cars and drivers to take part in hillclimbs too. Today with machinery and drivers being so specialized for the task, it is hard to imagine the top level entries from circuits having a go at a hillclimb race, and vice versa. On a regional level, this still happens, sprint circuit races and hillclimbs sometimes share competitors. But what would a hillclimb track built to modern F1 specs even look like...?

Yeah, and the drivers of the day would pretty much drive or compete in anything... For example, at the 1934 Monaco GP (IIRC), drivers Raymond Sommer, Rene Dreyfus, and Whitney Straight skipped one day of practice runs in order to compete at La Turbie hillclimb in nearby Nice. They also used the cars they'll be racing. Another one is an endurance race at Spa in 1933. Raymond Sommer (again) started the race in an Alfa Romeo 8C Zagato, and immediately tried to open up a big lead over the other competitors (most of which were also driving Alfa Romeo 8Cs). But there's a reason for this... Sommer's opening stint is his _only_ stint in the car. He drove for hours, trying to open up a big gap to the pursuers, then hand it over to his teammate, who will drive the car for the remaining distance, _as he had to be at Reims the next day for practice in a GP race there._ His teammate, Henri Stoffel (I believe), basically ended up driving for longer, and on the last few hours, relatively exhausted, he ended up ceding the lead and ending up finishign second...

Fantastic video as always! I think that these cars are a blast to drive at Linas Monthlery. That track is a very nice combination of high speed straights, slow and technical corners and it also has a huge banked corner. It's the track that screams twenties GP racing the most in my opinion, and maybe it deserves to be featured in one of your videos 😁😁

Always found the Goodwood hillclimb interesting. Probably not driving at 100%, but it's still interesting to see how cars from such radically different eras and disciplines compare to each other. I mean where else are you gonna see a NASCAR truck, 60s F1 car and Pikes Peak prototype on the same course?

I'm a sim racer enthusiast. Though I only have Assetto and Project Cars 1 and 2 (latter: ew ew ew). I do play games that I own "under the sleeve" so to say that I get into and race now and then. Only exhibition races. Not a pro here, but dude... I do enjoy the cars, the sounds, the skiddings, the adrenaline, the graphics (old and modern sims) and on top of it all, the landscapes. You really do see how much passion and love was put into the games. I've found myself running into your channel now and then after getting back from work and I jumped into PC1 and F1 Challenge 99 02 just to race for old times. :) Great content, please keep it up! And may we find ourselves racing on the pavement some day!

Absolutely love these mods. Sound, physics, visuals, skins... Everything is top notch quality. I play with these cars regularly vs AI. Had surprisingly fun time while trying oval tracks. Nicecuppatea's approach is something I would love to see from developers again. I miss fully fledged classes (other than GT3) in racing games/sims. I recently replayed GT Legends with ABB mods - amazing stuff. more than 10 different cars per each class. Much better than "historic touring cars" with 2/3 (up to 5 if we're lucky) cars novadays.

I unfortunately missed it, but the centennial of the 1923 French Grand Prix at Tours is this month, and was specifically 8 days ago on the 2nd. A full century, a tenth of a millennium has passed since that race, and indeed still, I feel it was not that long ago.....

Hillclimbs, or Sprint Hillclimbs are quite a popular motorsport here in the UK, very affordable and fairly easy enough to get into, I used to compete at a place called Gurston Down in an RX8, loved it! Now even my Mum competes on a sidecar all across England.

Quite entertaining when you claimed the CG is higher on the Sunbeam; the Sunbeam has the CG at the same height as the other cars in the mod. I suppose it illustrates placebo effect well.

Right, I've never driven any of the cars, me being an rFactor guy, currently researching and testing a mod bound to be released for rFactor (edit: to be clear, I'm researching and testing on behalf of the mod group). But I loved the fact that this mod represents an obscure period of motor racing; the period almost after the World War I, because I think the cars were gradually breaking out of the big, tall, unwieldy-looking shapes and designs of the so-named Edwardian period. And for this, I am giving the modder who made this a big thumbs up. So, for me, picking a favourite out of the cars is really tricky. But I think I'll stick to three; the Fiat, the Delage, and then, the Sunbeam. At that time, these three manufacturers were definitely at the cutting edge of racing car design. Coincidentally, those three were the faster cars of the group...

Speaking of the Sunbeam, the Sunbeam was the only car of the six to have all of their entrants finish the race; and if it weren't for a mechanical fault that slowed Kenelm Lee Guinness' car, then it would've been a Sunbeam 1-2-3.

@@legoferrari14 Perhaps my favourite Sunbeam of the bunch would be the later Sunbeam Tiger V12 (well, it's outside the scope of this mod and video). A powerful car for its time which is reported to have pretty good handling, which is rare, I think, for what's basically a Formula Libre car...

Personally I'm hoping Nicecuppatea moves on to the Miller Front Drive; a 1925 Grand Prix car that like its predecessor the 122, was powered by a 2-litre I8, but as the name suggests; it is the first ever front-wheel drive Grand Prix car to compete at the Indy 500, to show the potential that the FF drivetrain had for motor racing; a far cry from the econoboxes that FF is associated with nowadays. Nicecuppatea has already stated his intentions that he wants to produce the '23 Benz RH-Tropfenwagen; the first Grand Prix car with a Mid-Engine Rear-Wheel Drivetrain and the first grand prix car with Independent Suspension All-Round sometime in the future.

The Delage Type 2 LCV actually looked very different from the mod. What ever that is Supposed to be its not a 2 LCV... The model in the Game is Modeled After a Delage Bequet special, which is based on a Delage Type 2 Chassis The original Type 2 LCV is a low slung car, with a very destinctive square radiator and bonnet.

The Delage 2LCV in its original 1923 guise looked like how it was portrayed here. The square radiator and bonnet was a 1924 redesign. The Bequet Delage special is a 1923 version 2LCV. Was modified in 1926 to have the aircraft engine it still has to this day.

You can win hundreds of seconds sometimes by sliding the car in rFactor I heard. But calling AC arcade… what is Gran Turismo/Forza Motorsport then? And what about the actual arcades like FH4 and NFS

@@Dutch-McLarenJk82- Gran Turismo is fully arcade game, NFS (after NFS 5) is just action game with cars. I’m talking AC arcade comparing to true sims, like rFactor 1 (second is arcade too), GTR2, iRacing, LFS, netKar (by AC developers, yeah, that was true). Many race drivers were training in rFactor, never heard such about Corsa.
