Whatever the 360 camera is, the important thing is to always bring a 360 camera, especially on vacation, and get unexpected miracles from the photos and videos. Oh yeah, I'm still using Insta360 One RS and I'm very happy to have this camera

Buyer beware if you use the OneRS 360 1" edition for video in bright sun, anytime the sun shines on side of camera a large red reflection of sensor will appear in video on opposite side of camera in shape of rectangle. Insta360 support informed me it is inherent in camera design and to avoid using the camera in bright light 🌞 to avoid my video being ruined by the red reflection. Great camera though for images. OK for video if never in the sun or if in sun you postion camera in stationary location and point one lens at the sun to avoid sun shining on side of camera/lens. If moving around during video recording in the sun and turning in different directions (bike, skateboard, car) the red reflection will appear and ruin some of your videos if subject is in the rectangle area when sun shines on side of camera.

I think you’re referring to the lens flare- all 360 cameras will do this in bright sun unfortunately.

Hi Marcus, I have the same effect on virtual tours. Very disappointing. Especially because I do not have this effect with my very very cheap Elecom ocam-vrw01bk. (Cost me NEW! 70US$). In addition I have to say that there is no upgrade into quality at sunny light situations. In fact people who like to take shoots at bright daylight waste a lot of money by buying the Insta RS 1" 360° edition (so I did..:-(

This is definetly an issue. I've not had it as noticeable in my videos shot on the one x 2 as compared to the one inch. Sure there is some but it looks different and is much more usable footage I've found off the one x 2 if in bright light

@@BenClaremont hey bro .. somebody keeps scratching my car ... What type of camera can I put inside the car to find out who is coming closest? Like a 360 camera with multiple lenses I thought would be what I should look for ... These other ones are built different I guess ... What would you recommend? Also .. I want it to record 24 hour .. I'm willing to buy an external battery supply to keep it hooked up and recording.. I have to find out who is doing this to my car man

For me personally, the Insta 360 One RS was the way to go for an all-around versatile camera, especially for on-the-go personal use. If you're going for the 360 option, you will be buying the twin pack, so out of the box, you've already got some variety, and you can extend this by purchasing the 1-inch sensor. Admittedly the form factor of the One RS is both a benefit and disadvantage. Its condensed size makes it suitable to use as a traditional action camera as its smaller size allows it to be mounted without protruding; however, for handheld 360 shooting, you're really going to need to carry around a selfie stick.

I still like and use the GoPro Max - because I can mount it on a flat car and film trains as they go through a tunnel. All the other cameras are to tall and when mounted on a flat car the camera will not fit into a model train tunnel. GoPro is also great for rail-fanning. I am going to keep using the GoPro Max. Thanks for the video Since I'm just starting on virtual tours as a hobby I went for the insta360 X2.. Found it including sd card, monopod and lens guard for 320€ while the lowest I've seen X3 is 450€, no accesories included, it's 540€ atm on amazon

just got back from cuba. purchased the Insta360 One X2 before I went, but put it back in the box after day 2 and went back to my Xphase. Takes a bit more editing but all my shots were great.

Bought the x2, never used it, have the go2 never used it, have the one rs with every lens, never used it. SO. OBVIOUSLY I would LOGICALLY buy the X3 and the 1in one they came out with, along with the go3. Just wished the x3 and ONE RS line had HDMI OUT.

Insta360 X3 for video, bluelining, and some outdoor stills, Trisio 2 for indoor when there is litle movement, outdoor too, at a push, again if little movement

I have the x3. If your export correctly and the RU-vid quality setting are set high. The image really isn't too bad. I do want to try out that 1 inch though !

Best summary anywhere! I'm still on the X2. Too bad the RS-1inch doesn't have active-HDR and it won't be coming. You can probably recover highlights easier, though? It's best for actual VR. The X3 seems best for reframed action, because of small size, HDR and pre-recording, as well as best single-shot outdoors photo. When nothing is moving around, I can use mirrorless for 360 landscapes, I'm patient. 3D 360 is so hard though with a mirrorless, I'd love to see more info, but it's niche. Kandao often release half-baked products with issues, one can hope they'll learn.

yea, but most would run it through a color correct. Its not a deal breaker to me without HDR, but sharpness is.

@@BenClaremont haha I was actually looking for a dash camera for my motorbike. There are nearly no options except for one for $100 that has video quality similar to cctvs of 1990s. Totally unusable. Can't see numberplate from 3meters. And another one for $300 which is good enough quality, but my whole bike costs $800, so it doesnt make sense to buy it... I would have still purchased it if it had awesome video quality, but it doesnt. It is just okay. Only these two options exist. So, I was checking for a cheap action cameras that has car-mode. Some are available for around $80. And thats how I ended up with your video. I think you should make more videos about other products too like dashcam, security camera or action camera. There are large number of options, but most of them are terrible. Many dash cams that advertise as 4k are fake 4k. Their actual sensor resolution is less than 1440p, and their quality is often equivalent to 720p, thus figuring out the cheapest actually usable footage camera is difficult. Anyways, I watch lot of tech videos and your video has unusually high quality presentation, comparing all products for its different specs, comparing based on price, comparing the flaws, and presenting all of that in an easy to understand fun way without wasting time. The signal to noise ratio in your video is very high. You should expand to more categories. Even for action cameras, there will be lot of videos for expensive high end options, but not much for the cheapest options. For my dash cam situation, I considered buying Insta360 RS due to its incredible picture quality even though its price is high, but then found that it doesnt have dashcam mode, thus not usable for my purpose. Meanwhile the camera I am considering now is SJCAM c100+ action camera which costs $80 but has dashcam mode, and thus it will auto start recording when power is supplied when engine turns on. It is fake 4k, but has usable fullHD footage.

I bought the Insta360 1" in December for my new years trip to Dubai. I debated between the 1" and the X3 but at the end I decided to spend a little bit more for the 1" to get the low light capability.

At the beginning of last year I had an SC2. It was obvious that I did not meet the new standards for a virtual tour. Then I thought a lot about whether to invest in a new one. The choice was between 1" - Theta or Insta. So, the Insta360 won because of the price. I watched Ben's review at the time, and that was crucial for my choose. After what I saw today, I'm glad I went with the Insta360 1-inch :) What though I did not expect and continues to amaze me is Triso ... an impressive development Ben , looking forward to your review of the best virtual tour software for 2023 😁

I still have the One X and I absolutely agree with Insta360’s software. I nearly upgraded to the X3 this Black Friday but I was able to resist for another year. Either they come up with the X4 or I’ll hopefully get the X3 cheaper. The One X I have is still serviceable but terrible overall although my friends just love my videos taken from it. So why change now? For my own nitpicking nature, I’m due for an upgrade soon. So glad I stayed away from GoPro, their business overall isn’t going well lately and abandoning 360 part made me confident of my decision to stay with Insta360 who seems to be doing really great at the moment.

Good review. There are three things so with the Insta360 workflow which I find extremely frustrating and everyone should know before buying one : you buy a camera specialised on 360 video… but… A) the (iOS) app allows combining multiple clips only in 2D? You can not combine 360° clips and export them as 360° video. Seriously? B) and this is not only a problem of the app… in Studio you cannot do the second simplest task in video editing neither : combining several clips with some very basic transitions (e.g. fade through black). C) you cannot export 360 video in the app in full resolution. The app limits (for no reason I could imagine) the resolution to 4K. In order to export in full resolution you have to use Studio on Windows. Sure, 5.7K needs a lot of memory and performance,… but my iPhone 13 Pro with 1TB has plenty of both… When I bought my X2 right after it’s release, I thought „maybe the hardware guys were faster then the sw developers and they will provide an update soon“. But still today, more than two years later, these issues remain. A lot of cool special effects for social media nerds have been added,… but the most fundamental gaps for people who use these cameras really as 360 cameras, have not been fixed. Very frustrating, … in particular as the hardware is great. And it’s not as if there are tons of 3rd party solutions you can use. Adobe Premiere works but is for non-professional application ridiculously expensive. Most other video editing solutions (Pinnacle, Filmora,…) that do have some 360° features are not exporting beyond 4K neither. In 360° footage that makes a real difference! I finally found my solution in using Davinci Resolve. Not very intuitive but once you get used to it , it does the trick. Thanks a lot to Davinci … And shame on you, Insta360 software department !

the Qoocam 8k was super underwhelming with its overheating issue causing it to fall out of focus. Don't think i'd buy from them again unless they magically make the best photo/video 360 cam with one of the fastest workflows, best features, and no glaring issues as big like the 8k's overheating issue... Wish Ricoh would update their Z1 to have that dual fisheye plugin without having to go through that workflow just to get the quality.

The One X2 is now $299! I've had one for years and unfortunately cracked a lens a couple of days ago. I opted for the X3 as a replacement but was tempted at $299 to just get another X2. It's been an excellent camera.

I ordered the Insta 360 One RS twin edition. Because I wanted an action camera - then discovered the existence of 360 cameras, so decided to pay a bit more and have both action + 360. The alternative - buying two seperate cameras - would be much more expensive

This annual comparison is very good and it was very useful for me to buy my Trisio Lite 2 last year, thank you very much. It would be better if there was a mode for manual photos, similar to DSLR, that you can choose when each photo will be taken. This would avoid editing moving objects.

As much as I like x3 touchscreen and UI, the 1 inch sensor is deliver much better image quality. They sell the x3 as action camera but in reality 360 lens are so fragile that 1 drop and your camera is done. The lens protector does help but the image quality is impacted. I finally decided that leaving the 360 cam for snowboarding and use an action camera are best options (I cheap out on the extended warranty 🤣)

We just upgraded from the Theta SC2 (which we had for nearly 2 years), to the insta360 One RS 1". Our main use case is for construction photo-documentation, and unfortunately we seem to be having constant app disconnecting issues with the Insta360 (possibly lots of environmental interference - that doesn't seem to affect the SC2 weirdly enough). Thank goodness our old reliable SC2 still works great, until we can figure out how to manually capture decent images using the Insta360 with a timer. Quality wise, it seems like a small upgrade for images at first glance, while video and being a modular camera is pretty good for being on the move and swapping out batteries quickly.

Thank you for this, it was a great help. I wanted a Go Pro to take on holiday in July. I originally thought a Go Pro Hero 8 at £199 would be fine but man math soon got me looking at the 11 which was £349. 360 cameras wasn’t on my radar until a couple of videos popped up on RU-vid and here we are. Our main use was just going to be general holiday videos and a bit of which the Insta X3 seems to tick all the boxes. The X2 is only about £30 cheaper so unless there is a major reduction before we go away I know what we are getting. Thanks again for all your videos 👍

Now used the XPhaseProX2 for a few thousand images and agree on image quality. Much improved in outdoor shots compared to the X1 with less sun flare (even though different lenses add a lot to price).

I have an Insta360 X3. I bought it to create 360 videos to upload to youtube. I can't find any lucid explanation for how to do this. I have edited a 2-minute video on Insta studio and exported it as a 360 video and even transferd it to my Mac. But apparently I need something called a spatial video metadata injector or something. But that has not been updated since 2018 and won't run on newer Macs. Am I stuck? Do I need a Windows computer?

I do enjoy my Insta360 X3 which I got under your recommendation. I also do own a insta 360 go 2 so looking forward to the 3 this year. Also added the insta360 Link which is a brilliant web cam ad picked up a One RS on special. Wish I could get the 1 Inch upgrade for it though.

My choice is GoPro MAX 360 for a high effective vibration removal and the ability to record with an USB connection through an alternative power cover as long, as the 512 GB SD card allows (16 hrs?)

Thank you Ben , You are the disseminator that I most appreciate and respect . As confirmed the insta only follows the direction of gain. I asked them if "At least" they made lens caps for the rs one 1Inch, but they answered me that since it's not a sport cam they will never make them, and to look for them from other third party manufacturers... However I have the gopro, the one r 360 and the oners360 1inch, the latter is the one I prefer for photos, the gopro I prefer when I ride a mountain bike.

It is baffling to me that nobody is making 3D 180 cameras anymore, especially now that VR headsets are getting so much better resolution to be able to appreciate that depth perception and immersion. We were promised a 3d180 add on for the OneR but it never came. I wasted 400 quid on that camera, waiting for the add on. Hey ho

Yeah, I'm only waiting for a new 3D camera of ANY kind. VR tours are way better in 180 3d + people don't like spinning around all the time.

@@Octamed 100%. I very quickly realised 360 video is basically pointless for most VR uses. When you're sat on a chair or sofa, you aren't gonna be turning around. Much better to sacrifice that for the depth perception. It's so much nicer on the eye.

Unfortunately I don’t think the demand is super high for 180- while it’s awesome in VR headsets, the most popular use of 360 cameras is for reframing, not VR. Maybe that will change

Fantastic job on this video. I have two questions: 360 camera reviews and the manufactures spec never cover the minimum successful stitch distance. This is less of an issue with twin-lens cameras, but how close can you hold a book in front of the Xphase and still capture clean text? Also, can the Trisio operate in a sideways orientation? Useful in putting cameras into tight spaces like car interiors. Many rotating cameras can not drive their own weight when used sideways - how does the Trisio do? Would love to know those two answers. Your videos are the best!

Excellent breakdown. I smacked GO2 in drone racing, albeit it’s survived 18 months so super happy. I would love GO3 with 60fps and tad better light handling, maybe also physical button to avoid accidental stop recordings. Anyways nice vid.

I really like the large screen easy editing ,no modulars and water proof features of the X3 although I'm leaning on getting into virtual tours so it seems apparent that It's recommended to go for the one inch Because of the Larger sensor and the quality that brings to the table. also the modular thing is good for battery replacement .what do you think ?

360 One X2 is the best. If you use 360 camera for action video, you'll know how important is the light weight/form factor. I just bought my 3rd One X2. The X3 big screen looks good, but it comes with a heavier and bulkier size, and for 360 camera, who cares the screen after setup. 😄

@Ricoh As a person that has the Theta Z, X, and SC2; I am disappointed with the functionality of my Theta X. I purchased my Theat X when it was first released, and it arrived opened it up 4 months later only to find out it was defective camera. After going back and forth with the manufacturer they honored the warranty but it took 2 to 3 months before they sent me a replacement. I used the replacement camera they sent 3 times this year. It was last used in April 2023 for 15 to 20 minutes. I recently tried to update the camera last week, but it will not power on. the minimum repair is 625.00. I would stay away from the Theta X model for now.

I have an original model Ricoh Theta (just Theta, pre-S, no letters), been considering the Z1, now X for years, but wanted to justify the price to upgrade. The images aren't very high res, not cutting it anymore. This video was very interesting and helpful

I recall when the One RS 1-Inch 360 edition came out, there were some stitching issues if the subject was too close to the camera, like selfies or even shooting in a very small room (like a bathroom) doing virtual tours. Have they made any progress with that in firmware or editing software, or is that just the way it is?

I still have the One X2, and I'm thinking about upgrading to the X3. But I'm not a hard core 360 shooter, so I might just stick with the X2 for awhile. Great video, and thanks for sharing.

With both the Insta360 One R / RS and Gopro Hero platforms, I agree there only seems to be marginal improvements from one camera to the next. It's killing me, but I keep waiting for newer models to see how much more improvement can be had if I remain patient. I started liking the idea of the Insta360 1", but then I keep coming back to just waiting it out. 360 cameras keep getting better and I don't want to invest that much too soon.

This sounds like "analysis paralysis" (Google it). Instead of waiting forever for the next model, you're probably better off just picking something that meets your needs now, even if it's not the best. By the time you've learned how to use it and worked out what features you actually desire, time will have passed, new models will have arrived, and you will know with greater certainty whether you need an upgrade or not, and if so, which new model will do what you need. You might even find the camera you buy now is good enough for what you use it for, so you may never need to replace it with a better model anyway.

The problem is, they will always get better. You either do or you dont. Take phones for example. if you waited for the next better model, you'd still not have a cell phone.

Awesome side by side comparison! From my experience with skiing footage I think the gopro max is surprisingly still better, specifically in low light. I have no use for 360 stills. Also, I've looked around and gopro has what looks like an incredible deal on unlimited cloud storage and insta has I think nothing like it?? Which quickly becomes a big deal as the files sizes are large. The insta desktop app has huge limitations with basic features such as not being able to crop the original file to save space. Thus one of my main issues with the insta is that I have 1.5 TB of data after a few months of usage and they are missing a few tools like cropping and cloud to help manage that. Overall, not sad I bought the insta 360 x3 but I think the gopro max would have still been a better choice for ski videography for me.

After I thought about it more, and used my insta the last few days. The voice commands on the insta360 while it's on my head is unusable. It rarely hears me if it's on my head and it doesn't know the difference between stop recording and start recording. Which essentially makes it useless because I don't know if it's running or not. Also, The beeps/sounds for start stops are too similar. My friends with GoPros have a much easier time controlling their devices with sound. Better life on insta and cold resistance is great! No issues.

I’m currently using the insta 360 one X2 but I’m constantly fighting with it turning off due to the vibrations when it’s attached to my motorbikes

I own Z1 for pro virtual tours. Due to Dual Fish Eye possibilities - it is great. I have full control over my photos. However, I miss it is so poor for vid, especiallly due to it's crap software. I was using Insta360 couple yrs ago and the software was just great. So I'm thinking to buy X3...

Ben what about protecting the camera? Say for filming airsoft where there's risk of BBs hitting lenses. Would the X2 be best since it has the smaller screen? Or would the GoPro maybe be more durable?

You might want to use a protective case which a few of them come with. Perhaps the invisible dive case for X3 would be the best bet 👍🏻

Love the excellent review. Thanks. So the X3 with 1/2" sensor and HDR. Then the ONE RS 1-Inch awesome sensor but they don't add HDR? Frustrating especially since HDR is software manipulation.

I upgraded from the One X2 the X3. I use it purely for 4K 360 video and loved the X2, but when I heard the X3 was gonna have better mics, I was intrigued. THEN I HEARD IT WAS GONNA SHOOT HDR AND INSTANTLY WANTED IT. You see my primary use is on a mountain. I don't care about colors...I CARE ABOUT CONTRAST. And the thing is...I do it all for fun. I don't color correct or anything (I DO mess with the audio using an equalizer though.) So the out of camera side by sides of the X3 blowing away my old One X2... Ya I might just be doing it for fun and want to do minimal editing so...ALL THE MORE REASON TO GET THE ONE THAT LOOKS BEST OUT THE CAMERA! (And it DOES look the best because... I'M SKIING. Fast. And the Insta360 Stabilization...Nothing compares. Not at this PRICE POINT, anyway...LOL)

It's interesting how highly rated the Insta360 workflow is. I have an Insta360 x2 and I love the camera but I absolutely HATE using their software to edit. They have a lot of great shot options, but it takes SO long to get the videos down to your phone, even using the wifi connection. You can't rename the video clips so I have 20 clips and I know I want to include 4 specific ones, it is so hard to pick the right ones when including clips in the shot creator. And just a 100 other things that make is such a chore. And worse, there is no PC option. Sure you can do manual edits, but I would love to use the same quick shots but on a PC where I can see the videos much more clearly when previewing. All of this is the only reason why I am even thinking about another brand, to get away from Insta360s phone editor. So frustrating.

Not sure what you’re comparing it to, but no other camera or software comes close to the speed of the Insta360 workflow. This is literally what’s involved with editing 360 footage. Perhaps rather your bottleneck is a slow SD card, or you’re just importing a lot of footage, which naturally takes time.

Insta360 One X is the thinnest of all, and it supports the same 5,7k - still a very good choice in 2023!

Excellent review of current (early 2023) 360 cameras; thanks Ben! About my suggestion to Insta360 Technical Support to add Active HDR to the One RS 1-Inch camera, they said, "...so sorry to let you know that One RS 1-Inch edition doesn't have Active HDR mode due to the camera sensor difference. But we will forward it to the R&D team for further evaluation and they will consider it seriously." Somehow I'm not motivated to hold my breath on that one.
