So I had started to make a list and then I thought about how I discovered bands and how I felt if I got into them from the very start, somewhere in the middle or at the end. It made a difference. Still does. If you heard Kiss Alive before the first three studio albums, you might have a hard time listening to those common songs in their original versions because the live ones were so powerful and definitive. But in contrast, if you heard their first three albums prior to hearing Kiss Alive you might be able to appreciate both while still leaning to the live versions. But the deep cuts that weren't on Kiss Alive take on a whole new feel and meaning if you heard them first THEN heard the sonics of Kiss Alive. Just a thought there. So with that in mind...I would say this. For anyone who is looking to hear a band for the first time, let them hear it the way many of us did. From the beginning. Yes..but...they were better later...blah, blah, blah...yes..that is a possibility but I would hate for someone to jump head first into "Moving Pictures" as an example and then go back and hear "2112" or "Fly By Night" / "Caress of Steel"and go ..ugh...that isn't anything like "Moving Pictures". The same is possible in reverse. They love "2112" but "Moving Pictures" isn't remotely like it. Not on any level at all. That journey IS important and while I know that many can't take decades to get into a band like we did back in the 60's and 70's. (if you are old like me)..I am very grateful that that is how I discovered most of my favorite bands..from the beginning. So for the most part, I would start with the bands debut album.

Pete Paranoid was the first Sabbath album I heard, my Dad recorded his vinyl onto cassette back in 2001 when I was first getting into metal at 15/16 years old, sounded different to everything I was listening to at the time (height of the nu metal era Slipknot, Deftones, SOAD etc) brought the greatest hits after and fell in love with Sabbath. Saw them live in Vegas in 2013 Ozzy still had it what a showman!

Great show! I asked for the Glenn Hughes solo to help keep the conversation going. And Pete picks the one Hughes solo I don't have yet. Well... other than the Christmas and Live In Australia albums.

I have always loved "Sonic Temple", but I will refresh myself on "Ceremony". Recently listened to "Beyond Good and Evil" from 2001 for the first time, I was impressed! Curious Hack, do you like Ian's earlier albums from 1983 that came out before "Dreamtime"?

@@GuitarHack66 Actually the 2 before "Dreamtime" are similarly named bands Southern Death Cult and then Death Cult. Glad they changed the name again in '84!

Hey Pete! Maybe you can do a show yourself, or maybe with the Hudson Valley Squares . You guys can talk about the albums that represent Yes, Genesis, Slayer, Y&T, Metallica, Scorpions, Celtic Frost, etc. I personally want to know what albums you would recommend for Slayer, Dream Theater, and Venom.

Great idea for a video. As far as "newish" bands that are worth checking out - Scorpion Child is very good and not talked about very much. They put out albums in 2013 and 2016. I saw them open for Ace Frehley on one of his recent tours and they are an honest to goodness bluesy rock and roll band. Good, charismatic frontman as well. Doesn't get any better than Rival Sons though!

Pete on the mark per usual. For Kiss I'd probably go Destroyer. Yes- Cult underrated. I saw Lenny Kravitz open for them at a free concert at UNF outdoors early 1992- great music & tons of eye candy.

"British Steel" undeniably has some classic Priest songs, but as far as full albums, to me, "Sin After Sin" and "Stained Class" are more consistently great.
