Matthew Daltrey I remember hearing that the if the helmet broke it was better at protecting you. The impact force is absorbed by the helmet and not you if it breaks.

Although I know this is just supposed to be for the laughs and whatnot but FYI for people watching the video, the more the helmet gets crushed, the safer it probably is. It's actually because the helmet absorbs the chock rather than your skull. The same logic applies to cars these days where they are very easy to get completely crushed in an accident whereas back in the day the frames of cars were much more solid but were also less safe. Ride safe!

That works in cars because the internal cage where the passengers are located stays intact while the outside absorbs the impact. That clearly isn't the case here.

My husband wore a bell helmet when he was knocked off his bike and a van drove up his chest, over his face and head. Doctors said if wasn’t wearing his backpack with change of clothes in and helmet he wouldn’t be here. So we bought all the family Bell brand after we had proof it did it’s job :)

Stick with a name brand and it should be fine. Just because many of these helmets broke easily doesn't mean they're bad. That's what they're designed to do, they absorb the shock so it doesn't get transferred to your head.

Totally agree, I feel like they could have, and maybe should have, done a better job of disclaiming their 'testing' as being for entertainment purposes only. But I guess you are better off wearing any of these helmets as opposed to not having one at all during an accident. As even the least of them offers better protection that nothing.

Blue Waffle Yes. If it’s too hard, the pressure/momentum would just impact the head more. If the helmet takes all the pressure and breaks, the amount of impact on the head is reduced.

ok, ok, ok, i love these guys but this test was actually quite wrong because helmets shouldn't be too durable otherwise when you take a fall or say get into a fight if the helmet is too hard then it will damage your head so in reality if you get hit hard enough the helmet should break so it absorbs the shock of the impact, protecting the head. sorry. love you. dont hate me.pls

once a helmet takes a large impact you need a new one, its made to be crumpled/destroyed and take all the impact so your head doesnt, you cant use it again, also, massive amounts of heat will destroy a helmet and you need a new one

The helmet that held up the best on these tests was the hardest one, if you fall off your bike and hit your head, you want a softer impact, so don't go buying the hardest helmet.

Not true, you want a hard and brittle helmet that will break upon impact. Breaking into many pieces causes momentum to be transferred thus decreasing the impulse on your head giving you a smaller chance of an injury to the head.

@@cooperthurman But is not rare, it's rather usual actually, for the head to receive multiple impacts on an accident. You don't want the helmet to break in pieces at the first hit. Also, what if you drop it?. Deformation being better than fragmentation still holds up.

In the world of cycling helmets, $80 is borderline low-tier (though Giro does make very good helmets). A solid middle-of-the-road helmet would be about $150, and the really high-end helmets like Kask and Oakley that pros use can be $200-300, or even more in some cases. And there are notable differences in build quality between them. Not to mention time trial helmets, which can be easily $500+.
