This is an amazing video. I really liked your black & white video and though I didn't use the spreadsheet when I watched that video, I may go back and do it now. I was happy to see I rated the films pretty consistently, so my opinion didn't change much from one scene to the next on things like contrast and colour, that was validating. So my highest rated film at 81.07% is Ektar, followed by Fujifilm Pro 400H at 69.33% The film I hated the most at 44.53% was ColorPlus 200, and second lowest with 45.60% was CineStill 50d. I laughed and laughed. People love that film but it's emo hipster trash, as far as I'm concerned :P
Thanks! My numbers were very similar to yours. And yeah, I don't get Cinestill 50d, at least developed in c41. Have you ever tried night photography with 800t though? I really love the look.
@@AndrewGoodCamera I have not tried that. I really don't like colour in general, which is why I took the test, I asked myself "I wonder if there's something I like more than Ektar" Nope. Now that I have a solid medium format I plan to revisit colour, see if I like it in that format...starting with Ektar I guess :)
I think CineStill might be perceived somewhat washed and bland because since it's based on a movie film stock, it's intended to be graded before being displayed, tho don't quote me on that.
Well this all depends on the scanner and scanner settings as well. CineStill 800T scanned on a Frontier or with the Frontier setting in NLP is my favorite color look ever. I also shoot it with an 85 filter in day light.
This is massive. Not only scientifically well-made, but also curated from the profesional perspective giving more insights for each of the different films. I can only begin to imagine the immense amount of work that this 21 minutes video has taken you. Worth watching and re-watching. Big thanks for this.
For budget landscapes/items photography I will choose Fuji C200. For budget portrait photography I will choose Kodak Gold 200. For cloudy and moody versatile photography (dominated by green colors) I will choose Fuji Pro 400H. For cloudy and moody versatile photography (dominated by yellow colors) I will choose Portra 400. For sunny and contrast versatile photography I will choose Kodak Ektar 100.

I once asked my dad how would I know what film does what? he said something like unless someone has taken the same photo with the same camera and changed the film but kept everything the same, you'll have to learn it all yourself... Then I saw this video. *science* this video really does show how amazing our eyes are
Thanks for including a darker skinned model in some of your test shots. An Ultramax lab scan not rendering that skin tone correcctly was was made me go to Fuji C200
I only shoot E6, so I would appreciate that. But then again, there are only really like 4 slide films on the market... and they are all good. For different purposes but excellent.
For those having a lab scan their images, it’s very important to consider which machine is being used as they also add their own color science. Frontier tends to add a more golden cast (offsetting Fujifilm’s pinkish hue), while Noritsu has a more red base (offsetting Kodak’s golden hue). I generally stick with a Fuji Frontier scanner with Fuji emulsions and the Noritsu with Kodak films. Mixing these will often result in way too much pink or gold tones - unless you can communicate in advance with the scanner technician the output your looking for. Excellent video as always!!

Kodak Portra 400 would have been great in addition for comparing
Wow. You really went the extra mile with this video. The lengths you went to to capture identical scenes with the same hardware and different film stocks is truly remarkable. Smart way to do it to avoid shooting images at different times of day / lighting conditions. I especially liked seeing the landscape images included with the portraits. If you haven't made one already, a comparison of Fortia, Provia, Sensia, and Velvia would be great to see (assuming they're even commercially available still). I especially like Velvia 50 images shot outdoors in bright daylight.

Your effort in putting this entire experience together for us is so amazing. Hats off to you and thank you. I recently came into three mint-condition film cameras - a Canon AE-1, Minolta X-700, and Pentax K1000. I'm so excited to finally start shooting film after 5-6 years shooting digitally as a profession and always wanting to give film a shot. I've studied it a lot and it wasn't until you put everything into perspective with these side-by-sides and also providing the spreadsheet to help me keep track of my points of value that I feel I was truly ready to pull the trigger on ordering some rolls. It's funny because I've always absolutely loved the Fuji look, and it doesn't surprise me that, even blind, their C200 and Superia Xtra 400 stocks came out on top, with 81.33% and 90.33% scores, respectively. I know what I'll be ordering this week. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks for putting in the incredible amount of effort and work into this video. I saw my favorites confirmed by the blind test and the consistent results are telling me that Ektar and Portra should remain my go-to films. I am just starting my film photography journey and am glad I found this. Thank you for using different scenarios in the comparison to see just how well the films function in different situations. When it was all said and done, I am apparently a Fuji guy. Who knew.
@@eoghanhennessy15 funny thing is, before getting to the reveal, I noticed myself looking at the hue for the blues. If a film can give me a very interesting blue, I'm sold (can't decide between Portra or Ektar. They're both really interesting).

I loved how you kept it blind, it helped me be non biased on names and helped me pick one out. Surprisingly, Kodak was the one I liked most, based on the images i liked 3 different kodaks and 1 Fuji, everything else was neutral and not like was Cinestill. I will probably be getting the Kodak Ektar 100 as my first film. Thank you for putting this up
Color preference is subjective and a personal preference. I’am not sure why buy I have always preferred colder tones my favorite color is green so I guess I don’t mind slightly green shadows. I definitely do not like overly warm yellowish color rendering . It’s the Same in digital I shoot my instagram out of convenience with my Sony but prefer the color rendition from my canon 5d .
Very cool video! I did the blind test and the result surprised me quite a lot. My favorite films are Kodak Ektar, Kodak ProImage, Kodak ProFoto, Kodak Ultramax and Fuji inland 100 (the one with japanese letters and white box). I've tried A, B, D, E, F, I in the list. - Fuji C200 and Kodak CP200: Pretty much the beginner's choice. I don't use it much since it's grainy and not sharp. But somehow I scored them a solid 4 on grain structure, 4,6 and 3,3 on sharpness. - Fuji Xtra 400: It has a pink tone that I don't like, not really good on skin and while the color is very punchy, it's kinda' too over for me. Yet it score very good in my chart (4;4,3;4,3;3,6) - Kodak gold 200 and Kodak ultramax 400: I like them both and personally I think ultramax is very good for skin tone. Color is great and punchy, good contrast but grainy and not very sharp. Still they scored really low in my chart (even with the scene 2 where ultramax could shine according to my personal experience) - Kodak Ektar 100: My favorite of all time. It's like digital simulator for film. Very sharp, extraodinary grain, superb color and contrast. The only downside is the skin tone might get reddish. I scored it second to Fuji Pro400H, which I haven't tried due to the skyrocket price of fuji films. - Potra: The only good score I gave to it was in scene 2, the rest is forgettable. Guess it really does what it does best (portrait). Still those results also depend on the lenses (color, contrast and acutance). None of it scored 5 in acutance, in my opinion. My favorite lenses are Kodak Retina's and Zeiss Opton, they give better optical quality overall.

This was amazing!! This video was exactly what I was looking for! I just recently bought a canon sureshot 85 zoom and I had no idea what kind of film to get but my top favorite was the Kodak Ektar 100! So grateful to have found this video/channel!

Thank you for putting this together! I just had time to sit down and go through it properly with the scoring sheet, and I found it to be a wonderful resource for finding what film I want to shoot next. Last summer I did a bike trip with my partner where I shot fujifilm superia 400, and while I loved the results, something didn't look quite right. As you pointed out, it was the green shadows that I was noticing (even 1 stop overexposed). Looks like next up is Gold 200, and maybe some Ektar (😍) if I can justify the price. 1. INSANE VIDEO! 2. I felt like Kodak ColorPlus 200 had more latitude than the Ultramax 400 [which is weird]... 3. When you do direct comparisons [ color/sharpness]- it's better to cut in between shots, rather than zoom in & out. As it's hard to notice/remember the difference... 4. Great job, man!
I've settled to shooting b&w negative and just color slides. I process and enlarge everything myself. While wet printing slides is VERY hard these days, they give the best rendering of landscapes and animals alike, which is what I do with my big glass.

I too love Ektar and turns out the blind test confirmed that, although it was sort of unfair since I knew by look which one Ektar was. Beautiful film! According to my results I also need to try 400H. That may make sense since I don't particularly care for Portra 160 all that much. Or Cinestill although I've shot actual Vision 3 250D developed in a real ECN-2 process. It scans in rather flat but it's quite a film to love as well - if processing it was easier. Back to Ektar, it has never failed me in 35mm. I find it gets progressively harder to scan/color correct as I go up to larger formats. Gorgeous when I get it right but frustrating when I get it wrong. It's still my favorite color negative film though.

Ektar 100 is my go to film with my Leica M2, I cant stop looking at the images I get with it, but the Fuji C200 impressed me and at almost a third the price, I might have to check it out.

Just got a film camera a week ago been learning as much as I can on RU-vid and this helped so much with Film. I kept going towards C and G. FUJIFILM PRO400 and KODAK PORTRA160.
Wow, I always thought I was more of a kodak person for budget film, but my scores for the fuji films ran circles around the kodak. I'm going to go buy some c200, thank you so much for the fresh perspective!
oooh this video was so satisfying to watch!!! this was very very objective method for comparison. And i like how you managed to get as many factors constant as possible! On youtube this is very rarely the case, where such comparisons are kept so objective. Its usually someone comparing one film with a certain camera at some point of the day - with another film on another camera at a different point of the day. This isnt OCD, this is how any comparison SHOULD be done. with keeping as many factors same as possible. And yes it can be expensive sometimes, but otherwise it makes little sense to do the comparison in the first place.
Briliant video...have used several of these film but never seen the vast differences between them. Have used ColourPlus and C200 a lot, but my favourit "pro" film is EKTAR as well (mainly in 120 format). Anyway grate video, keep it up!
Great video! Very well put together. Kodak Ektar and Ultramax are my go-to film stocks of choice, although recently I've really been enjoying pushing Potra 400.

interesting. Fuji C200 scored best for me, and it's the cheapest too! In second comes Fujifilm Pro 400h and in third Superia Xtra 400! Guess I should be shooting Fuji... (did this as a beginner to film photography)
Ive only been doing film photography for a couple of months so I was pleasantly surprised to find I could tell from the blind test what a lot of the films were. Recognised the portra and the ektar, and I could tell which ones were the fujis
I shoot primarily digital, because practice shots are literally free, but I'd also like to get into Medium Format film in the future. A disposable camera would also be fun to use too.
@jackson pine You seem to be laboring under the delusion that I care that my gear is considered "obsolete". Does it matter how old it is when I get the results I seek? Why do I care that other's look down upon my gear when it does what I want it to. I know a couple professionals currently shooting with Nikon D300s, which are 12 years old as of this writing. I'm a hobbyist (currently) shooting with a Powershot G7X mkII which is a couple years old (bought used for $450), and for what I shoot, my only complaint certainly isn't levied toward the image quality. To add, the SD card was especially inexpensive, at $12 for a 64 GB SanDisk, which easily holds 1500+ RAWS.
Having now re-viewed this video after a couple of years and having experimented quite a lot in the mean time I have to agree that Ektra simply is the best in every respect, including scanning. It is more expensive, but today it is easier available and it never fails -- for if you have to discard every other picture you don't save money and miss a lot of shots. Just my 2 cents...

Great video thanks for taking the time . ok so my all time favourite film ever has always been Ektachrome I've shot it for the past 20 years and was so pleased with kodaks reintroduction of it and when I saw your intro and saw some boxes of it I was looking forward to picking it out of your lineup. So I watched the video and and i was looking for a frame that would blow my socks off usually ektachrome always does and a perfectly exposed ektachrome shot is like nothing else it really stands head and shoulders above any other for its gorgeous saturated look and none of the shots in your lineup kinda did closest was E or B. Then you reveal you didn't put Ektachrome in the lineup yet you did shoot it and you have it in your video at 20:33 and by god is it the best of the whole bunch. I really hate how the reversal films are pitched as being difficult I gave a friend a pentax ME Super with TTL metering pretty much all shots gained were good its not that hard!!!! Anyhow moral of the story shoot ektachrome then you can scan your film and project it as well!!! Unlike all the others I feel like I'm there and the sun is setting behind me at that location!

Wow what an effort, thank you for bringing this old science closer to today and back from the past. These are photographic roots and pure asthetic. I'd love to see (Fujifilm X) bringing even more profiles and variations into their cameras. (Maybe on day with Kodak Simulations because K. is off to the camera market) :-) !!!
I think it'd be super interesting if Fuji purchased Kodak Alaris and brought all their films into simulations. It could be a smart move. Only problem with that is that then they would most likely kill off all the physical film manufacturing.

I'd be happy if the test scans included other shots (e.g. the landscape that was shown in the beginning, the photos of the dog or the portraits). I guess there are other people like me who would like to see more examples available for blind comparison.

Great video! My favourite is also Ektar 100 but the 200 speed films tend to be more practical in terms of price and local availability. I am currently experimenting with shooting Gold @ 100 as it is quite affordable.

This is coming in really handy for my latest project using digital cameras. I've been approached by a few people saying they just want the picture to look right out of camera, and I was thinking even with film you had to choose a look. I mean you have always had photographers who used labs vs ones who used darkrooms, but you still chose a style in your film choices. So to take a digital raw photo and do absolutely nothing to it is a dis-service. So I'm making a photo editing video for those who hate photo editing. Basically doing an auto exposure in Lightroom and then choosing a preset that mimics choosing a type of film... so kind of like just choosing your "film" look and using a lab.
