Meh, it worked (sort of). It's on my amazon wishlist and if I no one's given it to me by Christmas, I'll solve that myself. I far prefer this sort of plug to a lot of other stuff I've seen people resort to on RU-vid with all the demonitization going on. Thanks for all your videos, and I'm sure I'll love the book.

"Wyspy Owcze" - "Wyspy" means islands; "Owcze" means associated with sheep, which is a word created through derivation from "Owca" - sheep.

@markuslindholm6206
@markuslindholm6206 6 лет назад
Fun fact: the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea is also named after sheep, namely from 'gute' which in the local vernacular means just that.
@Vitalis94
@Vitalis94 6 лет назад
Isn't it also derived from the Goths?
@fartreta
@fartreta 6 лет назад
No not quite actually... The local Gutnish name for sheep is 'lamb' (Standard Swedish: 'får') and lambs are called 'lambungar' (Standard Sw: 'lamm'). I think you mixed it up with the local breed of sheep which are called "gutefår" in standard Swedish. Btw, the name Fårö (which is a separate island from mainland Gotland) probably hasn't anything to do with sheep (although we don't know for sure what sheep were called in Old Gutnish), it probably comes from the Swedish/Gutnish verb 'fara' which means 'to travel, to go'. It probably refers to the strait of Fårösund between the mainland and Fårö, an important fairway (Sw: 'farled'). The name Gotland itself hasn't got any really satisfactory explanation. The two most important theories is either from the verb 'gjuta' which in modern Swedish means to mould/cast but which could also mean to gush (about a water source or a stream) in Old Swedish/Gutnish. Or it could mean the Island of the Goths (given that the Goths really emigrated from Gotland about which we don't know)

@gurgelurk
@gurgelurk 6 лет назад
Fårö is a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea, just north of Gotland. While the island has many sheep, and "får" means "sheep" in mainland Swedish, the local word for "sheep" is "lamb" (a lamb is called "lambunge"). In other words, sheep did not name the island. The word "far" also means "sea lane", which is a more probable etymology.

Okay, I gotta say it now: 1 - The Donors on Patreon are called "Patrons", so why shouldn't the people here be also called "Patron Saints" (instead of "Patreon Saints"). 2 - Even if it's only one "Patron Saint", you say "thanks to *their* suggestion". To me that doesn't really make sense. (But I'm only German and not THAT perfect in English. So, not a native speaker, what do I know...)

On point 2, saying "their" is perfectly fine in English. "Their" can either be a plural, or a single person of unspecified gender. And I'd guess he calls them "Patreon Saints" because countries already have Patron Saints.
