My father is 1/4 Chinese, and never used deodorant throughout my whole childhood. He never stunk. I was definitely jealous when I hit my teenage years and started smelling like a wet dog.
@@shania9528 you're just lucky then, most people have that problem. I know I had more of an issue with BO than my brother when we were going through puberty even though I'm a woman :/
@@Sky-bf5dx Damn never had a issue with body odor since I'm pure Chinese. Like I could go days without showering odorless. Like I didn't even know deodorant was a thing till I was a adult odorless.
In my own experience, i'm an asian too. I smell bad when i do not pay attention to what i consume. When i eat a healthy food, i'm not felt any odor came out from my body. But when i eat unhealthy too much fried thing and ect, not just an odor, my body feel achy, bloated, period just sucks.
Another east Asian flex for women at least is that we have less body hair. Most Asian girls and women I know don't shave their legs. For men it depends...
@@michellestella7477 Lol. I am mixed background, which seemed to just delay my facial/body hair although I hit puberty at 12. I can't say that I am enjoying having to shave more than once every 2 months so I dont look homeless :(
When I moved to China something that definitely shocked me was how difficult it was to find deodorant in random stores. Turned out they don’t sweat as much and tend to not have intense BO.
I dunno where u was but when i was in Beijing local markets the ppl sure did stínk and smell of B.O. … not as bad as índians, but definitely still bad.
@@grimreaper9477 It's not true that Asians don't smell, they just smell different. Koreans for example claim they don't stink but I sure smelled some funky stuff, just not the same scent of Europeans. Indians especially smell strong.
@@EasyBreezyCheezy Deodorant and showering?!? Why didn’t I think of that! Could have saved myself years of embarrassment. Thank you and your infinite wisdom!
@@EasyBreezyCheezy but in all seriousness, you clearly have no idea what some people go through, so keep the comments to yourself. It’s so offensive to suggest that I haven’t tried deodorant or soap.

My nose is super sensitive, it's actually a bit on the scary side. People around me get so confused because I won't say I can smell something, I just ask about whatever they did. For example, I won't say I can smell the river on my uncle but I know he goes for runs along it so I ask how his run was. It's pretty funny watching them try to figure out how I know these things XD
Same, people don't get how even weather and environment have a certain smell. Like if someone stands on the sun then their hair starts smelling like sunlight it's like really unexplainable the closest I can get to explain it is smells sweet and sour. Right, there is the one perfume called warm cotton? By clean and it's the closest to the smell of sunlight except it smells cleaner
@@sunflower-vz4du Same! I know exactly what you mean by the laying in the sun one, it's like... smells like warm? how the hell do i describe it? maybe sweet?

When I moved to Japan I brought a bulk amount of deodorant with me cause I knew it would be hard to find, I didn't want to the smelly foreigner. I told one of my Japanese friends about how genetics is the reason why me and other westerners had more BO, he didn't believe me, he was so certain that the reason why westerners smelled bad was because we ate too much cheese and didn't bath enough😒
As a Japanese, your concern is not realistic. It is said about 20% of Japanese have this abc whatever thing, which is at least 25 million people. With the added expat population, it is no wonder you can find good deodorant at any local store, so you have just increased your luggage.
Well, he wasn't entirely wrong about some westerners not bathing enough though 😂 the amount of people I have heard who say they only shower once every 2 days or wash their hair like once a week or wear the same clothes for days on end. And don't get me started on a lot of people not washing their hands properly in this country 😂 ( England ) And a lot of us do like cheese a lot 😂. But yes, a lot of us also wash everyday and are not obsessed with the cheese 😂
@@m900l4 showering two days once is weird sure but don't even start with that shampooing bs lol if you wash ur hair too often say goodbye to good hair lmao
Funny because statistically western countries on average shower more often than asian but okay..people can think whatever helps them sleep tight I guess
My Asian grandmother doesn’t wear deodorant and never has BO lol. So lucky. I noticed if you eat something heavy or spicy you’ll get BO. Light foods like salads and fruit do not cause BO
Eating more foods that are rich with antioxidants could help tremendously. Garlic is basic ingredient in East Asian kitchen, among other things like Wasabi, etc. And so I found out that the Middle East Asian would always say that we East & South East Asian smells like garlic, while they always smell like big onions 😂
East asians do have some nice genes regarding skin and BO, but all ethnicities have their own benefits too. Like white people look beautiful in general (there are very less white people who aren't goodlooking)
@@Cosmic_Penguin. Beauty is objectified it's in the eye of the beholder now the idea you just spew is wrong in general since any educated person would know that the beauty industry promotes white is beauty and there is a slanted idea of beauty that's why most Africans who participated on the world stage end up being white not black.
They say their armpits lack body odour, it doesn't mean they do not stink too. You can stink from different parts:armpit, Mouth, hair, feet and intimate parts. I have met some smelly asians too on my travels We all need to be careful about hygiene.
@Luther Franck~ I worked for a Doctor who spent time doing stand up comedy shortly after finishing Med School. He met Ellen Degeneres way before she had fame. He liked the club because it was a stress reliever and he met a lot of people. Docs are people too!
That settled my long-term mystery. In East Asia, deodorants are not something everyone has in their bathroom cupboards. In fact, it is quite rare an average person has one. I always wondered why!
@@evokz8070 Correct! You will normally not find them with other toiletries. One must search for them in pharmacy and if you are lucky, you may find 1 or 2 brands on the shelf.
@@EasyBreezyCheezy i’ve only ever seen one store in taiwan that carried deodorant. there’s obviously more than one store that carries deodorant in all of taiwan, but it’s really hard to find
I can attest to this fact. Hubby is half-Japanese and the man barely sweats or gets any bad B.O. Meanwhile, my pregnant butt is over here sweating like a fat kid...
Omg, I’m pregnant too and hate how much it makes me sweat!!!! I usually barely ever sweat even when working out I have to use sauna vests to make myself sweat. Thankfully it doesn’t smell like anything or I’d drive myself crazy since my nose is really sensitive 😅
@Johnny Rojas lol I also drink 3+ liters a day. Like I said I’m pregnant and when you’re pregnant to keep yourself and baby healthy and prevent pre-term labor or miscarriages you need to make sure you’re well hydrated. I was also in the military and they’d basically force us to drink enough water in boot camp so we wouldn’t get dehydrated and die while working out(there have actually been people who have died from dehydration in boot camp that’s why they’re so serious about it)
I have dry earwax and never really need to use deodorant ever unless it’s boiling outside. I had a friend who was a huge Koreaboo, she’s white and gorgeous but I’d give her rides home from our show choir rehearsals and she always smelled of BO really strongly. I was chatting with some mutual friends and apparently she heard about this lack of BO from East Asians and decided she didn’t need deodorant and I was like 😦
White people stink. Dated a German Italian woman who was gorgeous but she smelled bad when she came home after a run or didnt take a shower. It was very hard to deal with her being gorgeous but smelling like cheese. Dated an Asian woman after her and she had zero BO.
that’s so funny! my boyfriend is korean and i’m chinese/vietnamese so half east asian and half southeast asian. i smell a bit when i sweat, but my boyfriend doesn’t. he has dry earwax too. it’s opposite here which is hilarious: he actually told me to stop using deodorant because he thinks my smell isn’t really offensive or anything 😂 of course i still use it since i defo smell

I am that weird causasian- no real body odor my whole life-once I became pregnant with my daughter, my body hair disappeared and never grew- 24 years ago- have not shaved my legs etc. since. No foot odor etc. So, could just be an anomoly for me. I am German, so our tendency is towards a great deal of hair everywhere. Love that you two docs can pick on each other in a fun way!!
so grateful to be East Asian. I’ve never had to apply deodorant or anything like that (plus I’m very sensitive to fragrances) and I always smell nice (as I’ve been told by a ton of people.) I think I smell like my body wash all the time lol
Im chinese-Indonesian ,I don't use deodorant but I don't smell like my soap its more of not smelling like anything although my mom smell like her soap 😂
When you're sweaty, wipe the back of your hand under your armpit and smell your hand quickly before the swear evaporates... That's what you smell like 😉
It was a huge revelation for me to find out that people of other races (I'm asian) used deodorant heavily..I was like 'if you shower every day you'll be ok??'
All of my grandparents are from east asian(china) but live in south east asian country, I shower twice a day but still if I sweat, I will smell. If lucky, I will smell sweaty, if not, I will have that unpleasant smell. So I use deodorant everyday
I am west Indian and i never had to wear deodorant. I was always puzzled when some of my friends would panic if they forgot to put deodorant. And yes I do have dry earwax. Grateful for not having that gene!
my grandma on mums side is of japanese descent, she doesnt smell like how old ppl would normally smell but she smells sort of a bamboo forest, she doesnt have any hairs except for the lashes, brows and on the head PLUS HER UNDERARMS' ACTUALLY WHITER THAN THE REST OF HER BODY. shes been like this ever since, even before getting old.
@@brittanys505 as someone from Middle East I personally don’t shave or wax my armpits cuz I don’t think it’s necessary and my armpits are much brighter than any other part of my body, idk if me not shaving/waxing it is the reason but I’m certainly grateful that if I ever had to shave it it wouldn’t be dark lol
I've never been a smelly person, but I noticed that after my pregnancy, my ears produced way more earwax, that was not only wetter, but darker. And I started to sweat under my arms, which I rarely did before. Also. I had barely any body hair before, and that slightly changed as well, like now my underarms need a shave once a week, instead of once a month. I silently blame my son.

I’m so jealous of East Asians for having so little body hair I’m south East Asian and um....let’s just say I wasn’t blessed with smooth hairless skin 🥲🥲🥲🥲 but it’s ok. 🥲🥲🥲🥲
Its okay, Europeans and Americans just love coming to South East Asia and marrying the natives and locals. They love our weather, sunshine , food , culture , snd our lovely brown , tan skins.
A large percentage of Native Americans have this too. It’s also like 90%. I’m Mexican and I thought that having dry/flaky odorless earwax along with no body odor was normal. I kept buying deodorants until my late teens because everybody did until I realized it I it was a waste of money since I never needed it 😅
It is a common misconception that sweat itself causes body odor. In actual fact, human sweat is almost odorless. Body odor occurs due to bacteria on a person's skin breaking down protein molecules within sweat and producing odor as a result.
As an Eastern European woman I have all the crappiness. My pits and underboobs sweat a lot, I produce too much oil on my face and earwax, and am covered in hair... my legs, belly, arms, you name it. I'm too damn lazy to shave all the time 🙄
@danyaalqureshi3272 It seems that the darker skin does not sweat, and their skin stays young longer, but the lighter skin Blacks do sweat and get acne and age faster guess it's the mixed blood that mess them up! They also have more diseases.
if thats true thats pretty cool, quite the flex. Those korean folk got us all beat though. TO imagine never worrying about BO, dream come true lol. @@XoxoMoot
I worked with a girl from Korea, and she told me this fact. What was unsettling is that she believed she was in that 90%, so she didn't wear deodorant and often did not wash her hair. She was either in the 10% or ate so much garlic, the smell was coming out of her hair follicles. Very pungent. So my question is, is it common for the 10% to have more pungent body odor in light of this fact or is diet a contributing factor?
For koreans it's their diet... While the garlic smells, it's still healthy for you i don't understand why some people get repulsed by garlic smell. But yes asian head scalp smells if not washed everyday, no need to wash pits everyday but must wash hair!
@@deeb.9250 Thanks for the reply. Garlic can be overpowering for me when it's not associated with food. I certainly enjoy the smell of garlic when it's cooking, but when it's coming out of a person's body, the smell is a little less appealing.
Am full asian and can confirm Dee. B's part about asian scalps. I live in Singapore and with our weather and humidity levels, we often end up washing our hair everyday eso during the summer months of Feb-August. Personally I try to only wash my hair once in two days. My scalp gets gunked up and I end up losing more hair while shampooing if I shampoo less often than that.
At least I wash regularly and I can go out without deodorant. I'm Mediterranean. I'm not sure about other women, depending on their personal hygiene habits. I have a neighbor that her daughter hit puberty at 9 yo and she told us that her daughter emits a very bad body odor and that she couldn't find a good deodorant for her. That was a few years ago. I think the daughter is 17 now..
I'm curious if this gene also makes the sweat thicker, and if non-Asian people can have it. One of my adult sons has sweat that's very thick, and can go days without deodorant or showering without stinking. (He normally bathes- he was just curious.) His brothers and sister don't have this.
You might have one copy of the gene, like me (I'm white). I can smell if it gets *really* bad but I have never used deodorant in my life because it's never really been enough of an issue.
I'm Korean, and I've NEVER used or bought deodorant in my life. Even when I workout, I don't really need it. (I asked my trainer if I smell after intense workout, and even he was surprised cuz I still had that fabric conditioner smell😂)

You can always use that as an opportunity to politely share the fact that a large part body odor is tied to genetics (though not all). Just try not to sound like a smart-ass when saying it in person (feels almost impossible to do when just typing). So, some people will need deodorant more than others. In the same way that some people get more pimples than others, or some will need more or less sunscreen. All mainly genetics.
I'm Filipino, and I never had any under arm odor problem or even sweat odor, and in our culture. Having B.O is frowned upon. That's the reason why at an early age we are already taught how to clean up and get rid of possible B.O. we use small towels at our back to absorb our sweat, then put it with baby powder. And cologne is a must😂
Wild! We have 1% Asian genetics in our family, from my mom's side. I have almost 0 body odor (seriously have to go 5+ days without showering and getting sweaty.. ew). My ear was is also nearly white it's so pale yellow and it's super light and flakey. I can actually hear it shake around in my ears if there's a lot trying to work it's way out. (I used to have to have it professionally removed because my ears are so tiny. My 3yo has bigger ears. 😳)
My nose is quite sensitive. I can tell the difference between people's body odours. It stinks, which is why I avoid crowded areas. However, one time when I went to a shopping mall (forced by my mama), I was greeted by a nice odour emanating from a man in his thirties. It was the first and most likely the last person whose stench I could bear.
None of the women on my moms side, with the exception of my sister, have ever needed deodorant. I wonder what the correlation is between dry earwax and body odor ?
I also want to know because i've never use deodorand and i don't smell. Just like my dad but i still have wet earwax. I don't have BO at all and never had. So why do i have wet earwax? 🤔
I been in India for 1 years and believe me most of my mates didn't even wear deodorant but still they didn't stink!... At last I came to know that most of the Indians are vegetarians and vegetarians don't stink!
If I’m being completely honest no one should stink if they practice good hygiene and if they are eating right. A lot of people also don’t do a sniff test before they leave the shower like they should. Some people think just rubbing a bar of soap on them is enough but anyone that knows how to bath knows that u should get a towel or a loofa or something to scrub your skin. If u bath correctly the water and soap suds should have a bit of a tint to it as u see it rinse off on to the floor of your shower
