Couple of things. Just arrived on your channel today and loving what I’ve seen. And.. I’m far from convinced Mercedes have the engine regs nailed. They’ve done a lot of bigging up the aero upgrades recently and then the excuses follow (we thought we understood, but we don’t…), so I do wonder if whatever/whoever is behind that gets to have influence about what’s said about the engine (complicated ‘cos they’ve still not really understood their sim packages). I agree the key is the electrics and I’d be looking at Formula E. Now that does guide us to Mercedes where they have the best understanding of the electrical componants of the formula accross the different tracks and racing conditions (not always the most successful car, but then suspension, chassis and aero are also factors for overall results, obvz).

The biggest issue is the floor Infiltrations. In the first simulations the cars lose control very easily because the floor is too easily destabilised. I foresee that all teams will prolong the floor channels (the one external to the main Venturi tunnels) way more near the back wheels to give pressured outwash to make the floor more reliable. Only because the 2014 regulations were pretty much written to play directly into Mercedes’ strengths as a manufacturer. The engine regulations were based off of technology Mercedes already pioneered. But when regulations came that Mercedes didn’t understand, they shit the bed. The same thing is going to happen with the new engine regulations. This time, they were based off of technology Audi pioneered (an engine built to 2026 specifications bears many similarities to the power unit Audi fields in DAKAR). Therefore, Audi is going to surge ahead whereas Mercedes will fall even further behind because they never had to truly compete like Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren have. They were just handed their dominance by the FIA

As someone who's studying engine engineering in an Audi university, the more focus on electric power might be good for Audi, however, I don't think they can do much on the chassis side with the Hinwil factory, which is more important in this ground-effect era; have a decent engine, have a good floor and a suspension that gives the car a stable aerodynamic platform.

Red Bull will be good once they get all together because they're a great team and they've hired a lot of talent from Honda and Mercedes, but i think they'll struggle during the first years of this new regulations because of their lack of experience. Sure, Horner claiming they're 70 years behind Ferrari makes nonsense, but it's true that they're going to be a new engine manufacturer while Mercedes and Ferrari are way more experienced. If you ask me, I think the first years of this new regulations will be something similar to the 2017-2019 period, with Mercedes and Ferrari at the front and Red Bull slowly catching up

@jiboo6850
@jiboo6850 Месяц назад
Finally some people start to understand why some people think it would be "understandable" of Max to move. Redbull WILL have an adaptation period. that's for sure! we just need to see how long it will take them to come back on the top. and that Gamble "could" lead Max to leave. because Merc engine remains on the top despite not winning. the problem for these teams come from aero not engine. McLaren showed better perfs than Merc at some point and they were far from perfect in terms of aero. that shows how much of a gap there is to win for these teams if they get the aero right. so we can count on Merc to produce a great engine. there's no doubt about that. so Redbull will have pressure to build a good one. Honda with Aston will be there too if they keep going like this. yeah! the pressure will be huge on Redbull and Ford.
@pedrorequio5515
@pedrorequio5515 Месяц назад
The biggest deal is that the engine freeze is gone, that means development on the engine year round, the Brixworth team is very capable, but Honda also has the biggest development center in the world. Also keep an eye for Ferrari, the rules ban the Split Turbo, and Ferrari is the only team without a Split Turbo and that can be a money saver because there is a separate cost cap for engine development to avoid the incredible amount of Dyno hours the other engines had, so proven designs will reap the benefit rather than super exotic.

Don't count out Red Bull on the engine front just yet. People tend to forget that it were Red Bull engineers that sorted out the horrible 2014 Renault engine, not Renault themselves. They have a lot more know-how in that area than people think.

we don't doubt about that. like we didn't about every engineers before. we know they know. the probblem is arriving to put a solid project together. that's the difficult part. having a good car isn't enough. you need to have the best! between being the best and being second or lower, there's a very thin line. this is where we see great teams. many lost their teeth on it. Surprised you didn’t mention RedBull Powertrains buying out the tech and staff from Honda’s UK base; Honda lost a lot of members to RBPT, it’s going to weaken their 2026 engine development. I’m going Ferrari as favourites for 2026 personally; they’re currently second in aero only to RedBull, their current PU is extremely powerful, they’re the only team running a conjoined Turbo currently, which is going to be enforced in 2026. One really important factor for engines that doesnt get mentioned enough is reliability. Roght now I'd say the Honda has superior reliability. Nax and Checo haven't had an engine failure since race 1 in 2022 and even that was just vapor lock in the fuel line not really an engine failure. I think in 2026 reliability will be king. At least for year 1 of the new regs. The team who brings a reliable PU could completely run away with the Championship. Ferrari and Renault will have issues at first for sure they always do. As for the rest we wiil see!

It also helps that the 2026 engine regulations were pretty much built around technology they’re already familiar with (an engine built to the new regulations will operate very similarly to the power unit Audi already fields in DAKAR). I think with regards to Red Bull that you're overlooking the fact that teams don't have their own engineers for the engine, the engine manufacturers provide them. Also the fact that Ford used Cosworth to make the engines back in the day, that doesn't give them a strong technical knowledge of F1 level engines specifically. So although I might be more inclined to keep the ranking, it would be closer to Audi than the others.

But they've hired alot of new and interesting people recently for the engine department in Viry Chatillon, some of which have worked at Mercedes. Also, since they dont have a customer now for their own PU, they can focus more on themselves. And lets not forget that the current engine is a PR desaster for Alpine / Renault. Meaning they need to improve. And they will. They will not have the best engine, but i believe it will be about up there with the others, better than Audi. Gotta call out the revisionism at 4:49 at the time it was widely considered that red Bull was consistently 3rd best until around 2020. Red Bulls pace deficit was not explained by engine performance alone. They consistently from about 2014-2020 did a bad job. Mercs engine dominance was matched by Ferrari in 2015 and then reached a competitively similar footing in 2017 (bar Honda). Red bull suffered in the engine department but did not produce anyway near enough downforce to be competitive. They had good mechanical grip in slow speed and a demon driver pairing but that’s it.

I’m not going to pretend I’m any kind of expert in these matters, so I’ll defer any sort of technical knowledge to someone else. However, my impression from what the author here is saying is purely “their aero was the best” but that’s it. The Cult of Adrian Newey would agree, but I’m not a part of it, and again, I don’t know.

i wouldnt say 2022 racing was close tbh. everyone starting heavily unoptimised cars jockeying for positions. nothing to do with the specific regs i reckon. just what happens when u have brand new cars.

I won't count Alpine as complete washout. We are making all these assumptions on basis of today's reality which may or may not become a reality for future. Up until McLaren days everyone including Alonso thought that Honda are really poor for these regs but they proved us wrong with RedBull, now even Alonso wants to drive a Honda engine. Renault have a history of making super quick engines, and with the change coming up I believe they could be up in top 3 engines especially if someone having an long experience in working on Ferrari engines join their ship like Binotto.

Well Ferrari's got a head start due to the fact they never used the split-turbo concept in their V6 Power Unit designs whereas Mercedes and Honda did, and now that along with MGU-H is out for 2026.

I think engine wise, Audi might be the strongest one. They have extensive knowledge in both the EV market and with classic combustion aswell as the might of the second largest car company in the world. Merc has a lot of power, but less EV knowledge (at least imo looking at their retail cars) Honda is also an experienced mix, afterall japan went into EVs & Hybrids a lor faster than others. Ford doesnt even know what an EV is. Ferrari is willing to learn, I think they'll have a decent mix. Renault is Renault...

I think Red Bull-Ford powertrains aren’t going to be the best, not the worst, but not the best. I think they’ll have the best aero by far and Ferrari second. Thinking back to Mclearn/Honda 91? (Correct me if I’m wrong) when they were down on power but had a solid car and great drivers. Aston Martin I think is going to be third best.

Why is no one in the comment section talking about the Audi engine? There were talks of electric power going to the front wheels for these regs and that was discontinued because of how strong Audi are at this, giving them an unfair advantage. I don’t know about the ICE but the PU as a whole will be pretty mighty. I would rate them higher than the RB/Ford engine should they get the ICE side of things right.

Maybe because, sure Audi prob has the most experience with electric engines etc. But Audi is a new team and a new engine provider Audi has prob a learnings curve to go trough.

Ah, not too sure if Red Bull can hang on to the Constructor’s championship this year, as we are now seeing Ferrari and McLaren ace them off in Miami, Imola, and now Monaco. For 2025? They’re gonna need a big boost this year and the next, or they can even lose the driver’s title in 2025, if they don’t lose it this year.

They are really really well prepared. I say that Audi will play a big role when they get to F1! That Engine is so well prepared do not underestimate them! p.s: VW want's to beat the Silver Arrows so there is that! Be aware!

I don't think that engine power will really make a difference. Some manufacturs will probably face reliability problems in the first year. What will certainly make a difference is chassis-engine integration,. Also, car-driver integration, with so much electric power and not so much energy in batteries may finally be the key to successfull racing; drivers with their teams will have to add new variables to strategy - in real time. By the way, even before 2026, it would be nice to add battery state to the existing F1 display.

The thumbnail seems to imply Ford are supplying an engine for the 2026 season. They are not. Ford are in partnership with Red Bull (who are actually the ones developing the engine, based off the current Honda ICE). Ford are there to help with the hybrid/electric implementation. They have nothing to do with the engine itself. It's really more of a marketing/sponsorship deal, than an engine supply deal. It's meant to help Ford market their Hybrid/Electric vehicle technology.

I have to say, out of all the teams, I expect Mercedes to "lie" the most. George and Hamilton almost every race weekend, including the first race have said something along the lines of "Yeah the car feels good, I think we will be able to challenge the Ferarris". It never happens. Not sure if it is just a Goerge and Hamilton thing but if it is a whole team thing, they might be doing the same thing with their future engine.

Aston desperately need to get rid of Stroll. They could be very strong in 2026 but Stroll is their weak link, and they need their replacement to get settled in. Stroll out asap, replacement in for 2025 at the latest. Otherwise their engine won't matter.
