Which FCP Rotoscoping Plugin Is Better: Keyper Vs mRotoAI? 

No matter what software or app: if it is subscription i'm out! Subscription models for software are usually way too overpriced...

A useful comparison tutorial, thank you. Subscriptions remain a HUGE showstopper as far as I am concerned.

The paid subscription is why I’m still with keeper. If i could get a one time pay for mRoto I’d go with that

Too bad about the subscription thing. Personally, I do not do subscriptions. What would make more sense is that it tracked when I actually used the plug-in and then charged me. This would not be difficult if connected to the Internet.

Alas, I have seldom achieved the desired results with Keyper, especially with music videos, so I continue to seek a solution. As for mRotoAI, like many others I am not interested in subscriptions or plugins I feel are overpriced. On top of any purchase from MotionVFX Paddle adds on Canadian taxes even though they are not even based in this country. So, in brief, neither of these plugins are an option for me. But thank you Serge for the comparison and information. Well done as always.

Keyper just had an update that addresses 2 of the issues mentioned. Might add to the work flow, but it was a free upgrade. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Serge, thanks for the video. Love the channel. I have been watching all of the tutorials on the cinestudio to see if it was worth the cost; I already have Keyper. This video left me hanging a bit; who wouldn't want better quality? I don't think Keyper does a great job unless you are using a green screen or following specific parameters when filming with the intention of removing the subject in advance. If you were to film and then decide in post to remove the subject, would you then defer to the moto as the better option? Thanks.

I’ve found switching from person to subject on keeper gives better results, and might have included the woman holding the yellow sign.

are there other choices beside these two apps?

I wouldn't say that Keyper is total junk, but in truth you need to have pretty good source inn order for it to work. I junked it after 2 week because it just couldn't handle ANYTHING that wasn't near perfect

I have a bunch of Motion VFX tools. Quite a few actually and I've been using them for years, but I use them very infrequently. They are mostly specialized tools that I'm not going to need on every project. Now that Motion VFX are going to a subscription model, with a heavy heart, I'm going to have to say goodbye to investing in their new tools. I can't justify a subscription to plugins that individually I may only use once or twice for a couple of weeks a year. I'm not going to need a surface tracker on every project that I work on and neither will I need to rotoscope. These subscriptions are like money-sucking mosquitos that have attached themselves to my bank account. It's too much. When I check my accounts and see just how many there are and how much they all add up to it's ridiculous.

I hate basic subscriptions but let's be honest mRotoAI is much much better than Keyper and saves me a lot of time not playing with Keyper's sliders for average results. So for less than $1 a day a year, I don't mind, my time is worth more than that. Especially as it comes with a whole suite of very good tools that I haven't fully explored yet.

You left off a very important detail. When you use mRotoAI and rotoscope your video clips, you will lose the ability to use those rotoscoped clips if you ever stop paying the subscription. Even that you spent all that time to rotoscope your videos and keep them in FCP for future use, no current subscription on means you don't get to use them. Period. They force you into a model to sorta pay a royalty on your own work that you did on your time and when paying them a subscription during that period. This is unfair and it is unethical in my opinion. All of this in addition to forcing you into a subscription model. It is a great piece of software, but their business model is unfair.

Great comparison video Serge. mRotoAI looks to be the better, more professional option as you have more control over what you want to roto (for example in the demo they just roto a girl's shirt rather than the whole person which could be handy) but like so many here the subscription model is off-putting. If I were to get the 2D+3D option it works out to about $530 a year for me in Australian dollars and although all the plug-ins are powerful I can't see myself using most of them all that often. Alternatively Keyper is on sale right now (US$70 - about $107 AUS) and they just released version 2 a week or so ago so it's looking tempting.
